The response of stomatal parameters of four rice cultivars to atmospheric elevated CO2 concentration (EC) was studied using open top chambers. EC brought about reduction in stomatal conductance and increase in stomatal index, size of stomatal guard cells, stroma, and epidermal cells. The effects of NaCl (200 mM) and osmotic stress generated by polyethylene glycol (PEG) on PSII maximal quantum efficiency, photosynthetic CO2/H2O gas exchange at two CO2 concentrations, content of chlorophyll, proline, and malondialdehyde were investigated in shoots of C4 xerohalophyte Haloxylon aphyllum (Chenopodiaceae). The PEG treatment induced a low water osmotic potential (-0.4 MPa) and inhibited photosynthesis (by a factor of 2) and transpiration (by a factor of 4). The NaCl treatment, at equal osmoticity conditions, reduced transpiration (by a factor of 2) and stimulated photosynthesis (by a factor of 2.5). Only the
PEG-treated plants showed osmotic stress effects, which were demonstrated by an increase in proline and malondialdehyde contents in the shoot tissue. The data indicated that the halophilic character of this species was essential for maintaining the plant water status and photosynthesis under osmoticity induced by NaCl treatment. Herewith, the presence of C4-type photosynthesis appeared to be just an auxiliary mechanism, because this xerohalophyte did not reveal the efficiency in water use typical for C4 plants under osmotic stress, in the absence of a saline substrate., Z. Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) genotypes K-65 (salt tolerant) and HD 2329 (salt sensitive) were grown in pots under natural conditions and irrigated with NaCl solutions of electrical conductivity (ECe) 4.0, 6.0, and 8.0 dS m-1. Control plants were irrigated without saline water. Observations were made on the top most fully expanded leaf at tillering, anthesis, and grain filling stages. The net photosynthetic rate (PN), stomatal conductance (gs), and transpiration rate (E) were reduced with the addition of NaCl. The reduction was higher in HD 2329 than in K-65. Salinity enhanced leaf to air temperature gradient (ΔT) in both the genotypes. NaCl increased the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and peroxidase (POX); the percent increment was higher in K-65. The sodium and potassium contents were higher in the roots and leaves of K-65 over HD 2329. Thus at cellular level K-65 has imparted salt tolerance by manipulating PN, E, gs, and K accumulation in leaves along with overproduction of antioxidative enzyme activities (SOD and POX). and N. The grapevine (Vitis vinifera L. cv. Riesling) plants subjected to water deficit were studied for changes in relative water content (RWC), leaf dry mass, contents of chlorophyll (Chl), total leaf proteins, free amino acids, and proline, and activities of ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase (RuBPC), nitrate reductase (NR), and protease. In water-stressed plants RWC, leaf dry matter, Chl content, net photosynthetic rate (PN), and RuBPC and NR activities were significantly decreased. The total leaf protein content also declined with increase in the accumulation of free amino acids. Concurrently, the protease activity in the tissues was also increased. Two teak (Tectona grandis L.f.) phenotypes differing in their leaf length/breadth ratios were subjected to water stress by withholding water supply for three weeks. Growth rates of whole plants, developing leaves (1st and 2nd from shoot apices), and 2nd and 3rd internodes were higher in broad leaved (BL) phenotype than in narrow leaved (NL) phenotype before and after imposing water stress treatment. However, the effect of water stress on these parameters was higher in the BL phenotype than in the NL one. Diurnal course of net photosynthetic rate (PN) of 3rd or 4th leaves from shoot apices measured under well-watered conditions was higher for the NL than BL phenotype. PN, stomatal conductance (gs), and transpiration rate (E) in both phenotypes were negatively affected by water stress and their decline under water stress was significantly higher in the BL than NL plants. and G. Three-month-old mulberry (Morus alba L.) cultivars (drought tolerant S13 and drought sensitive S54) were subjected to water stress for 15 d. Water stress decreased the leaf water potential, net photosynthetic rate (PN), and stomatal conductance (gs) in both the cultivars. However, the magnitude of decline was comparatively greater in the sensitive cultivar (S54). Intercellular CO2 concentration (Ci) was unaltered during mild stress, but significantly increased at severe stress in both cultivars. The photosystem 2 activity significantly declined only at a severe stress in both cultivars. The Ci/gs ratio representing the mesophyll efficiency was greater in the tolerant cultivar S13. Involvement of stomatal and/or non-stomatal components in declining PN depended on the severity and duration of stress. A greenhouse experiment examined whether clonal integration improves photosynthesis of ramets of alligator weed [Alternanthera philoxeroides (Mart.) Griseb.], a widespread invasive clonal plant in China, in heterogeneous (He) nutrient habitats. The connected pairs of ramets experienced different nutrient levels [high homogeneous (Ho) nutrient, low Ho nutrient, and two He nutrient treatments]. Clonal integration significantly improved the net photosynthetic rate, stomatal conductance, transpiration rate, and minimal and maximal chlorophyll fluorescence of ramets of alligator weed in low nutrient condition. These characteristics may contribute to the success of the ramets of alligator weed in invading contrasting habitats. The effects of drought stress induced by polyethylene glycol, PEG (molecular mass 6000) on some ecophysiological characteristics of two wild pistachio species, Mastic and Khinjuk (P. mutica and P. khinjuk) selected as root stocks for production of edible pistachio trees (P. vera) in Iran and Turkey, were studied. Net photosynthetic rate (PN), stomatal conductance (gs), chlorophyll (Chl) fluorescence parameters, leaf water potential (Ψ1), leaf osmotic potential (Ψπ), leaf osmotic adjustment (ΔΨπ), and Chl a and b were measured. All parameters were influenced by increase in concentra-tion of PEG in the nutrient solutions. PN, gs, and Chl a were significantly higher in P. mutica than in P. khinjuk but, compared to the control treatment, P. khinjuk showed a higher resistance to drought stress than P. mutica. and A. We compared the effect of elevated temperature on morphological development, biomass accumulation and allocation, and gas exchange of three dominant plants (Caragana intermedia Kuanget H.C. Fu, Hedysarum mongolicum Turcz., and Artemisia ordosica Krasch.) growing in Chinese Maowusu sandland. Plants were grown in two temperature chambers (25/20, 28/23 °C, day/night) during 60 d. Tree height, number of leaves, and leaf area were increased in C. intermedia and H. mongolicum seedlings, while in A. ordosica temperature only affected tree height. Elevated temperature increased biomass and reduced the root : shoot ratio in C. intermedia and H. mongolicum seedlings, but not in A. ordosica seedlings. The net photosynthetic rate (PN) and transpiration rate (E) were increased at days 40 and 60 in C. intermedia and H. mongolicum seedlings, while in A. ordosica seedlings no significant effects on E were observed, and PN was increased only at day 60. Water use efficiency (WUE) was reduced at days 40 and 60 in H. mongolicum seedlings, and at day 60 in C. intermedia seedlings. No temperature effect on WUE was observed in A. ordosica seedlings. Tartary buckwheat (Fagopyrum tataricum Gaertn) has been praised as one of green foods for humans in the 21st century. Effects of fertilization on leaf photosynthetic characteristics and grain yield of tartary buckwheat has not been yet reported in detail. Our experiment was set as a split-plot factorial. The main plots and subplots were designed by fertilizer ratio and rate as: NPK 1:1:1 (A1), NPK 1:4:2 (A2), NPK 1:2:3 (A3), and 300 (B1), 450 (B2), and 600 (B3) kg (NPK) ha-1. Our results showed that the grain yield was significantly and positively correlated with the net photosynthetic rate (PN), stomatal conductance (gs), transpiration rate (E), PAR, stomatal limitation value (Ls), chlorophyll content (SPAD value), and leaf area index (LAI), while significantly and negatively correlated with intercellular CO2 concentration (Ci) and water-use efficiency (WUE). The grain yield, PN, gs, E, PAR, Ls, SPAD, and LAI increased and then decreased with enhanced fertilization, and their maximum values appeared in the A2B2 treatment. The Ci and WUE decreased and then increased with enhanced fertilization, and their minimum values appeared in the A2B2 treatment. Our results suggested that fertilization had significant effects on the leaf photosynthetic capacity and grain yield of tartary buckwheat
