Drought stress limits wheat growth and productivity. The response of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) to different water supply conditions (well-watered and drought-stressed) and exogenous methyl jasmonate (MeJA; 0 and 0.25 μM) was studied. The application of MeJA enhanced wheat adaptability to drought stress by physiological and metabolic adjustments. Drought stress reduced net photosynthetic rate (PN), stomatal conductance (gs), transpiration rate (E), and water-use efficiency (WUE) in wheat. The application of exogenous MeJA decreased also gs and E, but stimulated WUE. Meanwhile, MeJA mitigated the decline of PN, gs, and WUE induced by drought stress and midday depression by 6-183%. Both drought stress and exogenous MeJA induced stomatal closure, which improved water status and delayed plant senescence. MeJA enhanced the activities of superoxide dismutase, peroxidase, catalase, and reduced malondialdehyde content. PN-PAR response curves showed that MeJA mitigated the decline of maximum PN, apparent quantum yield, and saturation irradiance, and the increase of compensation irradiance. Drought stress and exogenous MeJA increased dark respiration rate and showed an additive effect. We examined the physiological and biochemical responses of two halophytic grasses with different photosynthetic pathways, Puccinellia tenuiflora (C3) and Chloris virgata (C4), to saline-alkaline stresses. Plants were grown at different Na2CO3 concentrations (from 0 to 200 mM). Low Na2CO3 (< 12.5 mM) enhanced seed germination and plant growth, whereas high Na2CO3 concentrations (> 100 mM) reduced seed germination by 45% in P. tenuiflora and by 30% in C. virgata. Compared to C. virgata, P. tenuiflora showed lower net photosynthesis, stomatal conductance, intercellular CO2 concentration, and water-use efficiency under the same treatment. C. virgata exhibited also relatively higher ATP content, K+ concentration, and the K+/Na+ ratio under the stress treatments implying that salt tolerance may be the main mechanism for salt resistance in this species. a1_The halophytic C4 grass, Aeluropus littoralis, was cultivated under low (50 mM) and high (200 mM) NaCl salinity and inoculated with the arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) Claroideoglomus etunicatum in a sand culture medium for 20 weeks. Shoot and root dry mass increased under salinity conditions up to 24 and 86%, respectively. Although the root colonization rate significantly decreased in the presence of salt, AMF-colonized (+AMF) plants had higher biomass compared with plants without AMF colonization (-AMF) only under saline conditions. Net CO2 assimilation rate increased significantly by both salinity levels despite stable stomatal opening. In contrast, AMF-mediated elevation of the net CO2 assimilation rate was associated with a higher stomatal conductance. Unexpectedly, leaf activity of phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase decreased by salinity and AMF colonization. Transpiration rate was not affected by treatments resulting in higher water-use efficiency under salinity and AMF conditions. Concentrations of soluble sugars and free α-amino acids increased by both salinity and AMF treatments in the shoot but not in the roots. Proline concentration in the leaves was higher in the salt-treated plants, but AMF colonization did not affect it significantly. Leaf activity of nitrate reductase increased by both salinity and AMF treatments. Mycorrhizal plants had significantly higher Na+ and K+ uptake, while Ca2+ uptake was not affected by salt or AMF colonization. The ratio of K+/Na+ increased by AMF in the shoot while it decreased in the roots. Leaf osmotic potential was lowered under salinity in both +AMF and -AMF plants. The aim of our study was to answer whether any positive correlation exists between K+ uptake and salt tolerance in wheat. We carried out a sand-culture experiment with salt-tolerant, DK961 (ST), and salt-sensitive, JN17 (SS), wheat cultivars, where photosynthesis, the K+/Na+ ratio, growth, and the biomass yield were examined. The seeds were exposed for four weeks to six NaCl concentrations (50, 100, 150, 200, 250, and 300 mM), which were embodied in the Hoagland solution. Salinity-induced decrease of K+ or increase in the Na+ content was much smaller in ST than that in SS. The reductions in the light-saturated photosynthetic rate (P Nmax) and chlorophyll content caused by salinity were smaller in the ST compared to SS. Stomatal conductance decreased in both cultivars under saline conditions; nevertheless, it was lower in SS than in ST. The antioxidative capacity was higher in ST than that in SS under saline conditions. Significant positive correlations were observed in both cultivars between K+ contents and P Nmax/biomass yields. During the last century, the world soybean yield has been constantly enhancing at a remarkable rate. Factors limiting the soybean yield may be multiple. It is widely acknowledged that changes of root metabolism can influence aboveground characteristics, such as the seed yield and photosynthesis. In this study, we considered root bleeding sap mass (BSM) and root activity (RA) as indicators of the root growth vigour. We used 27 soybean cultivars, spanning from 1923 to 2009, to evaluate the contribution of root characteristic improvement to efficient photosynthesis and dry matter production. The BSM, RA, net photosynthetic rate (P N), and organ biomass were measured at different growth stages, such as the fourth leaf node, flowering, podding, and seed-filling stage. Our results showed that the soybean cultivars increased their biomass and P N thanks to genetic improvement. At the same time, BSM and RA also increased in dependence on a year of cultivar release. However, both P N and biomass were positively correlated with root characteristics only at the podding stage. Our data revealed that the improved root characteristic may have contributed to the enhanced photosynthesis, biomass, and yield of soybean cultivars during last 87 years of genetic improvement. a1_Chromolaena odorata is a widespread exotic weed in southern China and other regions of the world. To better understand its invasive strategies, we compared leaf pigment contents and gas-exchange traits of the invader with its two coexisting species (native Urena lobata and invasive Bidens pilosa) under combined conditions of irradiance (full, medium, and low) and nitrogen (full, medium, and low) supplies. The chlorophyll (Chl) a+b content of U. lobata was the highest and the Chl a/b ratio of C. odorata was the lowest among the three weed species. In most treatments, leaf pigment, light-saturated photosynthetic rate (P max), and light saturation point (LSP) of all the species increased, while their Chl a/b ratios decreased with the increasing nitrogen. The P max and LSP of U. lobata were greater than those of the coexisting weeds under full irradiance (FI), but significantly declined with the decreasing irradiance. The invasive weeds, especially C. odorata, showed lower P max and LSP under FI, but they showed slight decrease under low irradiance. Compared to U. lobata, C. odorata exhibited the lower light compensation point (LCP) in most treatments, higher LSP under low and medium irradiance, and lower dark respiration rate under FI. In addition, all the three species showed similar responses to different irradiance and nitrogen conditions, mean phenotypic plasticity index (MPPI) of most photosynthetic variables of the two invasive species was lower than that of U. lobata. These results suggested that C. odorata behaved as a facultative shadetolerant weed, being able to grow in moderately sheltered environments; the lower MPPI might be one of the important competitive strategies during its invasion. Abiotic stresses induce phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase (PEPC) expression in C3 plants which suggests PEPC function in plant adaptation to stresses. Here, we studied the response of photosynthesis to short-term drought stress in rice seedlings overexpressing C4 PEPC from maize and millet. The transgenic lines exhibited 1.2-5.5 fold of PEPC activities than the wild type before the treatment, while 1.5-8.5 fold after five or ten days of water deficit. Net photosynthetic rate (P N) declined less during the water stress and recovered more after rewatering in the transgenic lines. These changes were accompanied with changes in the stomatal conductance (g s). The lower decrease in P N and g s resulted in significantly higher intrinsic water use efficiency in the transgenic rice lines after ten days of water withdrawal. There were no significant differences between the wild type and transgenic lines in maximum photochemical efficiency of PSII and photochemical quenching. The nonphotochemical quenching and the quantum efficiency of PSII maintained both higher in transgenic lines than those in the wild type during drought stress. This indicated that the transgenic lines could dissipate more excess energy to heat to protect PSII. Clonal growth is of great importance for survival, growth, expansion, and resource utilization of some species. Knowing how clonal plants respond morphologically and physiologically to different light environments can be useful to explain their occurrence and abundance patterns under specific environmental conditions. Responses of clonal growth, leaf gas exchange, fluorescence emission, and photosynthetic pigment concentrations to different light environments (100, 60, 30, and 15%) were studied in Amomum villosum, grown in the traditional way for economic purpose in Xishuangbanna, southwest China. The results showed that A. villosum attained vigorous clonal growth under 30% and 60% light, with a higher plant height, number of ramets, stolon length, thicker stems and stolons. Shade-grown A. villosum possessed a larger leaf area than that of the sun-grown plants in order to capture more light. For A. villosum, the higher
light-saturated net photosynthetic rate, light-saturation point, larger fresh and dry biomass can explained the better clonal growth for A. villosum under 30% and 60% light. Amomum villosum attained the highest values of minimal chlorophyll fluorescence under 100% light and the lowest values of maximum photochemical efficiency of PSII under 15% light. Our findings indicated that the full irradiance was too strong and 15% light was too weak for A. villosum plants. It was also verified by higher concentrations of photosynthetic pigments in the shaded plants compared to those grown under full sun light. Our results suggested that A. villosum seemed to be adapted to moderate light environment (60-30%) which was indicated by vigorous clonal growth and higher photosynthesis. This information is very useful to select clonal species for rainforest or understory projects. The effects of selenium on photosynthesis and Chl fluorescence in pear, grape, and peach were analyzed. The foliar spray of amino acid-chelated selenium solution was performed soon after fruit setting, totally six times, with an interval of ten days. After seven days from the last spray, the leaves in the middle of shoots were examined. Foliar spray of selenium increased the net photosynthetic rate in pear, grape, and peach. In contrast, the treatment decreased stomatal conductance, transpiration rate, and substomatal CO2 concentration in all the three species. The selenium treatment improved the maximum quantum yield of PSII, effective quantum yield of PSII, and photochemical quenching in all three species. Conversely, the selenium treatment reduced nonphotochemical quenching in all three species. We suggested that selenium can improve photosynthesis and protect PSII in fruit crops., T. Feng, S. S. Cuttings of Populus cathayana were exposed to three different alkaline regimes (0, 75, and 150 mM Na2CO3) in a semicontrolled environment. The net photosynthesis rate (PN), mesophyll conductance (gm), the relative limitations posed by stomatal conductance (Ls) and by mesophyll conductance (Lm), photosynthetic nitrogen-use efficiency (PNUE), carbon isotope composition (δ13C), as well as specific leaf area (SLA) were measured. PN decreased due to alkaline stress by an average of 25% and gm decreased by an average of 57%. Alkaline stress caused an increase of Lm but not Ls, with average Ls of 26%, and Lm average of 38% under stress conditions. Our results suggested reduced assimilation rate under alkaline stress through decreased mesophyll conductance in P. cathayana. Moreover, alkaline stress increased significantly δ13C and it drew down CO2 concentration from the substomatal cavities to the sites of carboxylation (Ci-Cc), but decreased PNUE. Furthermore, a relationship was found between PNUE and Ci-Cc. Meanwhile, no correlation was found between δ13C and Ci/Ca, but a strong correlation was proved between δ13C and Cc/Ca, indicating that mesophyll conductance was also influencing the 13C/12C ratio of leaf under alkaline stress. and G.
