- The article considers descriptive statements about languages and language phenomena and seeks to determine how such statements can be ''true''. Descriptive statements about languages are considered from the points of view of the correspondence and coherence theories of truth and from the point of view of hypothetico-deductive testing. 504. Indefinite descriptions as referring terms

- I argue that indefinite descriptions are referring terms. This is not the ambiguity thesis: that sometimes they are referring terms and sometimes something else, such as quantifiers (as argued by Chastain and recently Devitt). No. On my view they are always referring terms; and never quantifiers. I defend this thesis by modifying the standard conception of what a referring term is: a modification that needs to be made anyway, irrespective of the treatment of indefinites. I derive this approach from my speech-act theoretic semantics (2004). The basic thought is that referring terms have as their meanings speech-acts of a certain kind called proto-referring acts. These are acts in which speakers advertise or present intentions to denote, where denotation is a word-world relation, and advertising an intention is acting as if one has intentions, where it is open whether one has them or not, or whether the referring term used denotes or not. I show how this works for proper names. The meaning of a proper name is the speech-act proto-referring act type defined by a certain referential tree. This gives us the basis for an account of proper name meaning irrespective of denotation: a uniform treatment of full and empty names. Applied to indefinites, we can capture cases where speakers perform proto-acts-in which they advertise an intention to denote something-where they intend to denote, but others where they do not, but they still perform the proto-act: advertising an intention to denote. Two cases are ''Fred saw a hippo'' and ''Jane did not see a hippo''. In both cases U performs the same proto-act, represent it as R(a hippo)pro, but possesses the advertised intention in the first case, but not in the second. In the first case, R(a hippo)pro gains referential content-its descriptive content is expanded to include seen by Fred, whereas in its second token use it has no content augmentation or sentential determination of reference. In the second case ''a hippo'' is an empty referring term, just as ''Pegasus'' is empty in ''Fred did not see Pegasus; he does not exist''. But in both sentences ‘a hippo’ functions in the same basic way: in both cases the basic proto-referring act R(a hippo)pro is performed. Using this approach, I show how definite descriptions can be construed as indefinites with added meaning., Tvrdím, že neurčité popisy se týkají termínů. To není nejednoznačná teze: že někdy se jedná o termíny a někdy něco jiného, jako jsou kvantifikátory (jak tvrdí Chastain a nedávno Devitt). Ne. Podle mého názoru vždy odkazují na pojmy; a nikdy kvantifikátory. Tuto diplomovou práci obhajuji úpravou standardního pojetí toho, co je odkazujícím termínem: modifikací, kterou je třeba stejně provést bez ohledu na zacházení s neurčitými. Tento přístup odvozuji z teoretické sémantiky (2004). Základní myšlenkou je, že odkazující termíny mají jako svůj význam řeč-akty určitého druhu zvané proto-odkazující akty. Jedná se o akty, ve kterých řečníci propagují nebo prezentují úmysly, které označují, kde denotace je vztah mezi slovem a světem, a reklama se chová tak, jako kdyby člověk měl úmysly, kde je otevřený, ať už má nebo nemá, nebo zda použitý termín označuje nebo ne. Ukazuji, jak to funguje pro vlastní jména. Význam vlastního jména je proto-akt aktů, který je definován určitým referenčním stromem. To nám dává základ pro popis vlastního jména bez ohledu na označení: jednotné zacházení s plnými a prázdnými jmény. Aplikujeme-li na neurčito, můžeme zachytit případy, kdy reproduktory vykonávají proto-akty - ve kterých propagují úmysl označovat něco - kde zamýšlejí označovat, ale jiné, kde ne, ale stále provádějí proto-akt: inzerují úmysl označit. Dva případy jsou ''Fred viděl hrocha'' a ''Jane neviděla hrocha''. V obou případech U vykonává stejný proto-akt, reprezentovat to jako R (hroch) pro, ale má inzerovaný záměr v prvním případě, ale ne ve druhém. V prvním případě R (hroch) pro získává referenční obsah - jeho popisný obsah je rozšířen tak, aby ho viděl Fred, zatímco v jeho druhém použití tokenů nemá žádné rozšiřování obsahu ani referenční určení reference. Ve druhém případě je ,,hroch'' prázdným odkazujícím termínem, stejně jako ,,Pegasus'' je prázdný v ,,Fredu neviděl Pegasus; neexistuje ''. - According to H. Cappelen and E. Lepore, all context-sensitive expressions belong to the so-called Basic Set comprising indexicals and contextuals. This claim is supposed to be justified by certain tests. The paper deals with one of them, namely the test based on inter-contextual disquotational indirect reports. It is claimed that, contrary to appearances, it is not capable to qualify all indexical expressions as context-sensitive. A new version of the test proposed in the present paper removes this drawback. It leads to the consequence, however, that there are context-sensitive expressions that do not belong to the original Basic Set., Podle H. Cappelena a E. - The aim of this paper is to provide a semantic criterion of the difference between indicative and subjunctive conditionals. The criterion is motivated mainly by Stalnaker’s explanation of the difference, which, however, is formulated outside semantics. The Stalnaker-Lewis ''ontic'' semantics for conditionals will be transformed into an epistemic framework which will enable us to view the difference as a semantic one. - The first part of the paper examines the historico-philosophical roots and re-evaluations of the traditional link between the notion of individual substance and the subject-position in the structure of judgement, focusing on Aristotle, Kant and Hegel. The second part is devoted to Peter Strawson’s revival of the Aristotelian account and his attempt to derive a (hierarchically ordered) system of logico-grammatical asymmetries between the subject- and predicate-terms from the basic categorial opposition between particulars and general concepts. While Aristotle typically combines the categorial account of the subject-predicate distinction with the aboutness principle, Strawson emphasizes that both criteria can give incompatible results and opts for the former as philosophically more fundamental. In polemics with Strawson, the author defends the aboutness criterion (the ''legein ti kata tinos'' principle) and attempts to show that it meets the basic requirements which philosophy of language and mind should impose on the analysis of the subjectpredicate distinction. and Petr Koťátko
