The Afrotropical subgenus Disneyempis Smith of the genus Empis L. is redescribed and redefined on the basis of three synapomorphies, namely labrum lengthened, male eyes more or less broadly separated on frons with all ommatidia of equal size, female abdomen with bluish to purplish metallic reflections on terga 2-5. At present, the subgenus comprises six species: E. (D.) hirsutipennis Smith as type species, E. (D.) jacksoni Smith, E. (D.) argentea sp, n., E. (D.) spinifemorata sp. n., E. (D.) proboprocera sp. n. and one unnamed species E. (D.) sp. 1. All species are described [except E. (D.) sp. 1] and keyed. The subgenus has a tropical African geographical range including Cameroon, Democratic Republic of Congo (formerly Zaire), Republic of Congo and Gabon.
The New World genus Ataeniopsis Petrovitz, 1973 is revised. Fifteen species are recognized including three new species: Ataeniopsis carupanoi sp. n. from Venezuela, A. jaltipani sp. n. from Mexico and A. vinacoensis sp. n. from Argentina. Lectotype of A. haroldi (Steinheil, 1872) is designated, the name of type species A. notabilis Petrovitz, 1973 is reestablished, five species are given in a new combination. The taxa are diagnosed, keyed and illustrated, and biological information and distribution data summarized following the species descriptions. A hypothetical phylogenetic analysis of Ataeniopsis based on cladistic analysis is presented.
Genus-group taxa of Platerodinae are revised and valid taxa are redescribed. The validity of Plateros Bourgeois, 1879 is reinstated. Libnetomimus Kleine, 1927 is made a junior synonym of Libnetis Waterhouse, 1878. Calleros Gorham, 1881, Calloplateros Pic, 1923, Costatoplateros Pic, 1949, Ditoneces Waterhouse, 1879, Libnetomorphus Pic, 1921, Microplateros Pic, 1921, Planeteros Gorham, 1883, Tolianus Pic, 1921, Melampyrus Waterhouse, 1879, and the subgenus Cautirodes Pic, 1921 are considered to be junior synonyms of Plateros Bourgeois, 1879. The subgenus Pseudeuplectus Pic, 1922 is synonymized to Cavoplateros Pic, 1913, and Pseudoplateros Green, 1951 is made a junior synonym of Falsocalleros Pic, 1933. Macrolibnetis Pic, 1938 formerly classified with Platerodini is synonymized to Platerodrilus Pic, 1921. Samoaneros Blair, 1928 is considered to be a junior objective synonym of Melaneros Fairmaire, 1877, which is excluded from Platerodinae and is kept incertae sedis in Lycidae. Fernandum Pic, 1924 and Subdihammatus Kleine, 1926 are transferred to the subfamily Leptolycinae. Teroplas oculatus sp. n. and Microlycus mexicanus sp. n. are described. Neotype of Plateros brasiliensis (Lucas, 1857) and lectotype of Microlycus minutus Pic, 1922 are designated. In order to understand relationships within the subfamily, included genus-group taxa were cladistically analysed.
Material of Afrotropical Afrocrania Hincks, 1949 (= Pseudocrania Weise, 1892, not Pseudocrania M'Coy, 1851) is revised, and a redescription of the genus is given. This publication is on Afrocrania species in which males have head cavities or extended elytral extrusions. Species without those sexual dimorphic organs will be revised in a subsequent paper. Material of Pseudocrania latifrons Weise, 1892, Pseudocrania foveolata (Karsch, 1882) (= Monolepta africana Jacoby, 1894, = Pseudocrania nigricornis Weise, 1895), and Pseudocrania assimilis Weise, 1903 was examined; Pseudocrania basalis Jacoby, 1907 is excluded from Afrocrania; Afrocrania kaethae sp. n., A. luciae sp. n., A. kakamegaensis sp. n., A. longicornis sp. n., and A. ubatubae sp. n. are newly described species.
In this second part of the revision of Afrotropical Afrocrania Hincks, 1949 (= Pseudocrania Weise, 1892, not Pseudocrania MCoy, 1851), a group of Galerucinae restricted to Africa, additional material is revised. Herein, species in which the males lack deep head cavities, partly horned antennomeres, or extended elytral extrusions, but usually have small post-scutellar extrusions or depressions, are considered. Material of Afrocrania pauli (Weise, 1903), comb. n. (= Candezea pauli Weise, 1903), and A. famularis (Weise, 1904), comb. n. (= Monolepta famularis Weise, 1904; = Candezea atripennis Laboissière, 1931, syn. n.) is studied. Lectotypes are designated for A. pauli, A. famularis and C. atripennis. Six new species, A. aequatoriana sp. n., A. minima sp. n., A. nigra sp. n., A. occidentalis sp. n., A. pallida sp. n. and A. weisei sp. n. are described. Distribution patterns are mapped. Together with the already revised species there are 16 valid Afrocrania species are hitherto known. Its phylogenetic position within the Galerucinae is discussed, identification keys to males and females for all known taxa are presented.
The genus Phaeochiton Kerzhner, 1964 is revised and P. alenae sp. n. from Mongolia is described. Differential diagnoses are provided for the genus and its three species. Illustrations of male and female genitalia, tarsus and pretarsus, photographs of the dorsal habitus, hosts, and distributional records of the species discussed are given.
In this paper the strictly attaphilous Central- and South American genus Phoxonotus Marseul, 1862 is revised. Based on the structure of their antennal cavities, the species of Phoxonotus are newly split into two subgenera: Phoxonotus Marseul, 1862 and Alienosternus subgen. n. (type species Saprinus venustus Erichson, 1834). The subgenus Phoxonotus contains three species: Phoxonotus (P.) tuberculatus Marseul, 1862 (French Guyana, Suriname, Brazil: Pará, Mato Grosso), P. (P.) lectus Lewis, 1902 (eastern Peru) and the newly described P. parvotuberculatus sp. n. (Guatemala, Costa Rica). The subgenus Alienosternus subgen. n. contains two species: Phoxonotus (Alienosternus) venustus (Erichson, 1834) (Brazil: Bahia) and P. (Alienosternus) fryi Lewis, 1879 (Brazil: Rio de Janeiro and Bahia). P. tuberculatus Marseul, 1862 is synonymized with P. suturalis Lewis, 1907, syn. n. Lectotype of Phoxonotus fryi Lewis, 1879 is designated. Four genera of the blister beetle tribe Cerocomini are revised, including the new genus Somalarthrocera. The genera Rhampholyssa Kraatz, 1863 and Somalarthrocera comprise two species each, whereas Anisarthrocera Semenow, 1895 and Rhampholyssodes Kaszab, 1983 are monotypic. S. savanicola sp. n. from Kenya is described, S. semirufa (Fairmaire, 1882) comb. n. is proposed, as well as new synonymy: A. batesi (Marseul, 1872) = A. batesi villiersi Kaszab, 1968. Phylogenetic relationships among the six genera of the tribe are defined by a cladistic analysis, which indicates three clades, one basal, represented by the genus Cerocoma Geoffroy, 1762, the second including Anisarthrocera and the pair Rhampholyssa and Rhampholyssodes, and the third including Diaphorocera Heyden, 1863 and Somalarthrocera. Bionomical information available for the four revised genera is summarised. Keys to these genera and to the species of the two non-monotypic genera are presented, as well as diagnoses of genera and species and catalogue of localities. Anisarthrocera is distributed in the northern Persian Gulf, Rhampholyssa in the Turanian depression, Rhampholyssodes is endemic to the eastern Arabian Peninsula, and Somalarthrocera is distributed in Somalia and Kenya. A brief biogeographical analysis of this primarily Palaearctic tribe is also presented.
The genera Nemadiopsis Jeannel, 1936 and Falkonemadus Szymczakowski, 1961 are redescribed and revised. The taxonomic position of Nemadiopsis and Falkonemadus is analy sed using features of male and female genitalia. Two new subgenera, Nemadiopsicus subgen. n. and Nemadiopsella subgen. n. and five new species, Nemadiopsis (Nemadiopsis) grossicornis sp. n., N. (Nemadiopsicus) rotundatus sp. n., N. (Nemadiopsella) curvipes sp. n., Falkonemadus similaris sp. n. and F. avicularis sp. n. are described. Keys to the subgenera and species are given. Nemadiopsis (Nemadiopsis) edwardsi Jeannel, 1936 and N. (N.) irretusus Szymczakowski, 1962 are proposed as junior subjective synonyms of Nemadiopsis (N.) fastidiosus (Fairmaire et Germain, 1859).
This study revises the originally monotypic genus Afrogyrodactylus Paperna, 1968 (Monogenea), the species of which infect alestid fish (Characiformes) in Africa, and includes new records of these parasites from three geographically distant countries, Senegal, Sudan and South Africa. Morphology of opisthaptoral hooks and bars and nuclear ribosomal DNA data revealed three Afrogyrodactylus species. Afrogyrodactylus girgifae sp. n. is described from the fins of the Sudanese nurse tetra, Brycinus nurse (Rüppell), and A. kingi sp. n. presents from the gill arches of the South African sharptooth tetra, Micralestes acutidens (Peters), whereas a previously undescribed Afrogyrodactylus sp. occurred on the fins of B. nurse from Senegal. All three species differ conspicuously from the only one known species of this genus, A. characinis Paperna, 1968, by the dimensions of their haptoral hard parts. Detailed morphological and molecular descriptions and comparisons are presented.
