The paper tries to analyze critically what is usually taken for granted - the causal relation between empirical knowledge about external world and the world which is (supposedly) known. The aim is neither to propose a new definition of knowledge nor to restate an old one but rather to take a closer look at the claim that knowledge is a true belief caused in a proper way by facts, events, etc. of the external world. This claim is a core of the epistemological approach usually labeled as ''causal theory of knowledge'', but there are many causal theories distinct from each other. The paper therefore sketches the causal components of D. Davidson’s epistemology and the roles they play in the process of cognizing, first. Then it exposes more details of Davidson’s approach and pushes some of them further critically., Příspěvek se snaží kriticky analyzovat, co je obvykle považováno za samozřejmost - kauzální vztah mezi empirickými znalostmi o vnějším světě a světě, který je (údajně) známý. Pak odhaluje více podrobností o Davidsonově přístupu a některé z nich kriticky posouvá dále., and Miloš Taliga
The Evolutionary Argument (EA) plays the central role in the realism- antirealism dispute. Proponents of this argument maintain that evolutionary theory pro- vides a convincing evidence for the reliability of our cognitive capacities. The evolutio- nary function of these capacities is to inform us about the character of our environment; and, as evidenced by the survival of our species, we can surmise that our cognitive capac- ities tend to provide a true, rather than false, picture of the world (cf., e.g., Quine, Kornblith, Munz). However, opponents of this view argue that evolutionary processes are not exclusively adaptive or optimal; indeed, some processes may not be adaptive at all (cf., e.g., Putnam, van Fraassen, Stich, and Bradie). Some of these critics, e.g., Thomson, believe that evolutionary theory demonstrates that our knowledge is not true, and that our cognitive capacities are not only fallible but completely unreliable. They produce only one of the many possible pictures of the world. I criticize this type of argument by means of a non-adaptationist interpretation of evolutionary theory (Wuketits), and I am seeking an evolutionary way out., Evoluční argument (EA) hraje ústřední roli v realisticko-antirealismickém sporu. Zastánci tohoto argumentu tvrdí, že evoluční teorie poskytuje přesvědčivý důkaz spolehlivosti našich kognitivních schopností. Důležitou funkcí těchto kapacit je informovat nás o charakteru našeho prostředí; a, jak dokazuje přežití našeho druhu, můžeme se domnívat, že naše kognitivní kapacity mají sklon poskytovat pravdivý, spíše než falešný obraz světa (srov. např. Quine, Kornblith, Munz). Nicméně, oponenti tohoto pohledu argumentují, že evoluční procesy nejsou výhradně adaptivní nebo optimální; některé procesy nemusí být vůbec adaptivní (srov. např. Putnam, van Fraassen, Stich a Bradie). Tento druh argumentů kritizuji prostřednictvím neadaptistické interpretace evoluční teorie (Wuketits) a hledám evoluční cestu ven., and Vladimír Havlík
By addressing fictional names head on, we risk going back to familiar, ordinary names intuitions and missing what is specific about them. I propose a different strategy. My view is grounded on fictional name sentence utterances and on indexed tokens of such sentences, where an index contains the fictional narrator and the time and location of the token. Using the framework of pluri-propositionalism (Perry 2012), I argue that the semantic relation of reference – ''x'' refers to y - where ''x'' is a name, rather than the notion of an object, is central to the debate on fictional names. I also contend that fictional names do not enter into that relation. Tokens of fictional names are individuated with the fictional index of the sentence they originate from. This allows for dispensing with a referent. Indexed fictional name sentence tokens have semantically determined truth conditions, yet they are not truth assessed given facts. In this respect, they have cognitive significance only, and no official or referential content. Indexed fictional name token of sentences are accepted as true, but they are not true. and Tím, že se zaměříme na smyšlené názvy, riskujeme, že půjdeme zpět ke známým, obyčejným názvům intuice a postrádáme, co je o nich specifické. Navrhuji jinou strategii. To umožňuje vynechání referenta.
The article considers descriptive statements about languages and language phenomena and seeks to determine how such statements can be ''true''. Descriptive statements about languages are considered from the points of view of the correspondence and coherence theories of truth and from the point of view of hypothetico-deductive testing. It is argued that descriptive statements about languages are rationally discussable interpretations disciplined by what we can observe within a given paradigm, and that issues of truth and issues of empirical testing should be distinguished., Článek se zabývá popisnými výroky o jazycích a jazykových jevech a snaží se zjistit, jak mohou být tyto výroky ,,pravdivé''.
A significant and interesting part of the post-Gettier literature regarding the analysis of propositional knowledge is the attempt to supplement the traditional tripartite analysis by employing a fourth condition regarding the defeasibility of evidence and thus to preclude the counterexamples displayed in Gettier’s original article. My aim in this paper is to critically examine the sort of externalism that accompanies the most promising of the proposed fourth conditions, due to Pollock, in order to offer some fresh insights on this old epistemological issue. I argue that Pollock’s paradigmatic treatment of the matter gives rise to a critical problem with regard to the exact role of the fourth condition and its relation with the onto-semantic or alethic condition of propositional knowledge, to wit, truth. In the light of this discussion, I draw certain conclusions about epistemic externalism and point out some of its theoretical shortcomings., Významnou a zajímavou součástí post-gettierovské literatury týkající se analýzy výrokových poznatků je pokus doplnit tradiční tripartitní analýzu využitím čtvrté podmínky týkající se nedotknutelnosti důkazů a tím vyloučit protiklady uvedené v původním článku Gettiera.
The aim of this paper is to consider a possibility of understanding assertibility as a semantic concept. This leads to a nonstandard view of the relation and borderline between semantics and pragmatics. For the language of classical propositional logic entailment will be defined as a relation which preserves assertibility rather than truth and it will be shown that this enables us to model some linguistic phenomena in an adequate way., Cílem příspěvku je zvážit možnost pochopení asertivity jako sémantického konceptu.
Carnap’s reinvention of the Ramsey-sentence approach to scientific theories has been at the center of a new debate in recent years. Following Grover Maxwell, Psillos (2000a) argued that Carnap’s re-invention of the Ramsey-sentence had failed to lead to the desired neutral stance in the realism-instrumentalism debate, and ended, instead, to a form of structural realism which happened to be liable to Newman’s objection to Russell’s version of structural realism. The objection held that without putting suitable restrictions on the range of the variables of the Ramsey-sentence, a Ramsey-sentence approach to theories renders trivial and a priori true all ontological commitments to unobservable entities issued by scientific theories. By arguing that Carnap achieved the neutral stance, Friedman (2011) counter Psillos claim. He denied that any form of realism could be attributed to Carnap. In this paper, I provide a middle ground, where an unorthodox form of structural realism could be attributed to Carnap. I highlight parts of Carnap’s work which deal with the problem of designation of abstract terms and the relation of the language to the facts of the matter (in Carnap 1934; 1950; 1966), to argue that it was Carnap’s view about the practical methodological considerations, being at work in the construction (or choice) of the linguistic systems, which led him to the unorthodox form of structural realism. I also claim that the same practical considerations constitute the nub of a viable Carnapian answer to Newman’s objection., Carnapovo znovuobjevení Ramseyova přístupu k vědeckým teoriím bylo v posledních letech v centru nové debaty. The unique relation between logic and truth (protorelation) is crucial for understanding Fregean conception of logic. Frege has an insight that the nature of logic resides in the ''truth'', which he finally locates in the assertoric-force of a sentence. Though Frege admits that assertoric-force is ineffable in ordinary language, he coins in his conceptual notation for such a force a much-disputed sign, i.e., judgment-stroke. In this paper, I will try to demonstrate that judgment-stroke is not adequate for the task its inventor has assigned to it. Accordingly, it is misconceived and inconducive to clarify Frege’s vague insight into the protorelation. The mistake of judgment-stroke for the sign of assertoric-force has its root in Frege’s ignorance of the significant difference between ''judgment'' and assertion'', which will be elucidated at length in the light of Husserl’s theory of ''doxic-modification''. In the end, based on a further elucidation of the activity of assertion, I will advance a tentative interpretation of the vague insight Frege has concerning the protorelation., Jedinečný vztah mezi logikou a pravdou (protorelace) je klíčový pro pochopení logiky Fregean.
A Moderate Anti-realist (MAR) approach to truth and meaning, built around the concept of knowability, will be introduced and argued for in this essay. Our starting point will be the two fundamental anti-realists principles that claim that neither truth nor meaning can outstrip knowability and our focus will be on the challenge of adequately formalizing these principles and incorporating them into a formal theory. Accordingly, I will introduce a MAR truth operator that is built on a distinction between being true and being factual. I will show then that this approach partitions propositions into eight classes, on the basis of their knowability. We will then ask the following question: Given the anti-realist principles, what kind of theory of propositional meaning can properly explain the meaninglessness of fully unknowable propositions? This question will lead us to the claim that the meaning/content of propositions should be identified not with the set of possible worlds in which the propositions are true/factual, but rather in which they are known. This modified approach will then be used to analyze both the Liar Paradox and the Strengthened Liar. To anticipate the conclusion of this essay, it will be shown that a MAR framework can render definite truth and factuality values to the Liar sentence and it will also confirm our intuition that such paradoxical sentences are devoid of proper meaning. and Moderní antirealistní (MAR) přístup k pravdě a významu, postavený na konceptu znalosti , bude představen a projednáván v této eseji.
