The article is devoted to the discussions concerning economic growth and the environmental crisis that took place in Poland in the 1970s. The author focuses on two scientific conferences and the publications that accompanied them in order to analyse the questions of economic growth, science, technology, and consumption with regard to raising awareness of the ecological crisis. The reception of the Polish translation of The Limits to Growth is one of the questions discussed more specifically in the article. The main purpose of the article is to amend the ecological dimension of socialist thought and to reconstruct the main tensions and contradictions between the ecological and productivist tendencies within socialist ideology. The author analyses these questions in the context of degrowth theory and with regard to the current climate and ecological crisis.

Mezi českými vědci z oboru přírodních a technických věd se v sedmdesátých a osmdesátých letech 20. století do disidentských a opozičních aktivit zapojilo jen minimum jednotlivců, kteří se navíc většinou pohybovali jen na okraji disidentského prostředí. Jako zajímavý příklad může sloužit český mikrobiolog Ivan Málek, v padesátých a šedesátých letech jeden z nejvýznamnějších představitelů ČSAV. Po roce 1968 jeho kariéra rychle nabrala sestupný ráz a postupně přicházel o všechny veřejné funkce v domácím i mezinárodním prostředí včetně postu ředitele Mikrobiologického ústavu ČSAV. V čistkách na konci šedesátých let byl zbaven členství v komunistické straně a na jeho pracovišti mu nové vedení v čele s Vladislavem Zalabákem znemožňovalo vědeckou činnost. V roce 1973 dokonce musel odejít do penze a již v následujícím roce mu byl odepřen vstup do Mikrobiologického ústavu, k jehož vybudování lví měrou přispěl. Již počátkem sedmdesátých let se Ivan Málek zapojoval za zprostředkování svých přátel, např. Františka Janoucha do disidentských aktivit, jako byl např. protest proti věznění publicisty Vladimíra Škutiny a angažoval se i nadále v ekologickém hnutí. Osobní zážitky z let 1973 a 1974 ho však přivedly k rozhodnějšímu disidentskému vystoupení, především k vytvoření dopisu prezidiu ČSAV a nejvýznamnějším politickým orgánům, v němž ostře kritizoval tehdejší poměry ve vědě, stagnaci mezinárodních styků, perzekuci části vědců a zhoršování materiální základny vědy v Československu. Dopis byl původně zamýšlen jako základna pro širší petici a konzultován s předními reformněkomunisticky orientovanými disidenty Zdeňkem Mlynářem a Jiřím Hájkem a také s dřívějším Málkovým rivalem, bývalým předsedou ČSAV, chemikem Františkem Šormem, který byl také postižen čistkami z konce šedesátých let. Nakonec však byl dopis odeslán pouze pod Málkovým jménem a následně koncem roku 1975 publikován v exilovém časopisu Listy. Dopis vyvolal ostrou odezvu režimu, zprostředkovanou Ivanu Málkovi pohovorem na prezidiu ČSAV, který s ním vedli hlavní představitelé této instituce. Zároveň na Ivana Málka zavedla Státní bezpečnost signální svazek, což znamenalo jeho rozpracování ve věci pozdějšího možného trestního stíhání. Ve stejné době vytvořil Ivan Málek i několik dalších textů kritizujících především soudobou vědní politiku, ty však již patrně nepublikoval. Nestal se ani signatářem Charty 77 a režim mu nastavil prostřednictvím ministra vnitra Jaromíra Obziny vlídnější tvář a umožnil mu i některé výjezdy do ciziny. To spolu se zhoršujícím se zdravotním stavem vedlo k výraznému utlumení Málkových disidentských aktivit v první polovině osmdesátých let. Znovu vzrůstá jeho zájem o politické dění v, období tzv. přestavby, aktivnějšímu zapojení do probíhajících procesů ovšem bránil jeho zdravotní stav. Přes perzekuci a nesouhlas s ,,normalizačním''režimem Ivan Málek zůstal prakticky až do své smrti v roce 1994 oddaným stoupencem reformního komunismu. Nikdy nepřekročil svůj stín, a tak se nemohl stát ,,českým Sacharovem''. Zároveň se ovšem v období sedmdesátých a osmdesátých letech nikdy výslovně nedistancoval od své činnosti v roce 1968, nepřerušil styky s některými přáteli z opozičních respektive disidentských kruhů, ani se nestal agentem Státní bezpečnosti. Jeho kritika vládnoucího režimu se z dnešního pohledu může jevit jako velmi krotká, mnozí jeho vědečtí kolegové postižení jako on po roce 1968 se však nezmohli ani na tuto úroveň., Of all the Czech scientists engaged in the natural and technical sciences during the 1970s and 1980s, only a minimum number were involved in dissident and opposition activities, and these for the most part only moved on the fringes of dissident circles. One interesting example is that of the microbiologist Ivan Málek, one of the most prominent Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences (CAS) representatives during the 1950s and 1960s. After 1968 his career took a rapid downward turn and he progressively lost all his public positions both at home and abroad, including his post as the Director of the CSAS Microbiology Institute. During the purges at the end of the 1960s, his Communist Party membership was revoked and the new management at the institute did not permit him to engage in scientific activities. In 1973 he was compelled to retire and as early as the following year he was denied access to the Microbiology Institute, which he had substantially helped to create. During the early 1970s Ivan Málek became involved through his friends (e.g. František Janouch) in such dissident activities as the protests against the imprisonment of journalist Vladimír Škutina, as well as in the environmental movement. However his personal experiences in 1973 and 1974 led him to make a more robust statement, particularly in his letter to the CSAS Presidium and the most eminent political bodies, where he sharply criticized the conditions for science at the time, the stagnation of international relations, the persecution of some scientists and the deterioration in the material base for science in Czechoslovakia. This letter was originally intended as a basis for a broader petition and it was consulted over with leading reform-communist dissidents Zdeněk Mlynář, Jiří Hájek and Málek's former rival, the former CSAS President, chemist František Šorm. However, in the event the letter was sent under Málek's name alone and subsequently published in 1975 in the émigré journal Listy. It provoked a strong reaction from the regime, which was conveyed to Ivan Málek at a CSAS Presidium interview conducted by the chief representatives of that body. At the same time State Security produced a signal file on Ivan Málek, which meant his screening for possible later criminal prosecution. Ivan Málek also wrote several more texts primarily criticizing the science policy of the era, but evidently he did not publish any of these. Nor was he ever a signatory of Charter 77, so the regime showed him a more affable face, even permitting him to make several trips abroad. This together with his deteriorating health led to a considerable reduction in Málek's dissident activities in the first half of the 1980s, . His interest in political events reemerged during the "perestroika" period, but his health prevented any greater active involvement. Despite the persecution and his disagreement with the "normalization" regime, Ivan Málek remained a devotee of reform communism until his death in 1994. He never stepped over his own shadow, so he could not become a "Czech Sakharov". At the same time, however, during the 1970s and 1980s he never explicitly distanced himself from his 1968 activities, he did not break off relations with friends from opposition and dissident circles and he did not become a State Security agent. His criticism of the ruling regime may nowadays appear very tame, but many of his scientist colleagues did not even attain that level.
