The effect of abscisic acid (ABA) on the net photosynthetic rate the ribulose 1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase (RuBPC) and the phosphoenolpyruvate caiboxylase (PEPC) activities, the chlorophyll (Chl) content and growth of pea plants (Pisum sativum L.) grown under "white" (WR) or blue radiation (BR), were investigated. BR as compared to WR enhanced P^, the activities of examined enzymes, and Chl content. In špite of higher of the plants grown under BR, diy matter of their shoots was lower in comparison with WR. ABA-treated plants grown under both WR and BR showed reduction in Pn- ABA had no effect on the activities of both RuBPC and PEPC and the Chl content. Independent on the radiation quality, ABA reduced stem elongation, but did not affect the biomass of whole shoots.
We examined differences in net photosynthetic rate (PN), transpiration rate (E), water use efficiency (WUE), ratio of substomatal to atmospheric CO2 concentration (Ci/Ca), cuticle thickness (CT), epidermis cell size (ECS), mesophyll cell size (MCS), vascular bundle size (VBS), tissue density (TD), and coefficient of water loss (k) in Sabina vulgaris as related to sex, shoot form, and leaf form. PN, E, WUE, Ci/Ca, MCS, VBS, and k varied with sex, whereas CT, ECS, and TD did not. These differences in physiology and anatomy between the female and male plants may be closely related with their reproduction behaviour. PN, E, Ci/Ca, CT, ECS, MCS, and VBS were significantly smaller in the erect shoots than in the prostrate shoots, WUE was just opposite; TD and k did not vary with shoot form. These changes in physiology with shoot form indicate that erect shoots may be more tolerant of water stress than prostrate shoots. PN, E, Ci/Ca, TD, and k were significantly greater in the spine leaves than in the scale leaves, whereas WUE, CT, ECS, MCS, and VBS followed the opposite trends. The changes in physiology and anatomy with leaf form suggest that scale leaves have higher drought-resistant and water-holding capacities than spine leaves. Measurements of field gas exchange showed that three-year-old seedlings had lower drought-resistance and higher water loss than five-year-old seedlings, which provides some evidence that seedling survival decreases with decreasing plant age. and W. High variability in leaf gas exchange and related traits were found in 30 genotypes of field grown finger millet. The variability in carbon exchange rate per unit leaf area (PN) can be partly attributed to the differences in the stomatal conductance (gs) and area leaf mass (ALM). The PN was positively correlated with total dry matter (TDM). However, no relationship between PN and seed yield was found. The leaf area showed a positive and significant correlation with total biomass. None of the other gas-exchange traits had significant relationship either with TDM or with seed yield. The ALM showed a strong positive association with PN. However, it was not correlated with either total biomass or seed yield. As a result, the use of ALM as surrogate for PN for identifying high biomass producing genotypes only had a limited value. Hence selection for high PN would result in higher biomass producing types.
Distribution of NADPH-protochlorophyllide oxidoreductase (POR) in etioplast of etiolated barley leaf was studied by using Western blot analyses of etioplast fractions isolated on a sucrose gradient. When the leaf was exposed to light, POR content decreased in the etioplast inner membrane and prolamellar body sub-membrane fraction while it was simultaneously increased in the stroma. By using 77 K fluorescence spectroscopy analyzes, we found for irradiated etiolated leaf that the POR protein in the stroma was co-localized with chlorophyllide (Chlide) emitting at 678 nm. Relocalization of the POR-Chlide complex induced by irradiation suggests that POR participates in the pigment transport processes during early stages of the thylakoid membrane development. and D.
