Optical characteristics, contents of photosynthetic pigments, total soluble sugars, and starch, rates of gas exchange, chlorophyll (Chl) a fluorescence, and leaf water relations were analysed in three Vitis vinifera L. cultivars, Tinto Cão (TC), Touriga Nacional (TN), and Tinta Roriz (TR), grown in Mediterranean climate. Chl content was significantly lower in TC than in TN and TR leaves, while the Chl a/b ratio was higher. TR had the lowest net photosynthetic rate, stomatal conductance, and contents of soluble sugars and starch than TN and TC. In spite of low Chl content, TC showed the lowest photon absorbance and the highest photochemical efficiency of photosystem 2. TC had the lowest predawn and midday leaf water potential. The capability for osmotic adjustment was similar among cultivars and the calculated modulus of elasticity was higher in TC leaves. The typical lighter green leaves of TC seemed to be an adaptive strategy to high irradiance and air temperature associated to water stress. and J. Moutinho-Pereira ... [et al.].
In six dominant species of the Amazonian 'Bana' vegetation, leaf blade characteristics, pigment composition, and chlorophyll (Chl) fluorescence parameters were measured in young and mature leaves under field conditions. Leaf δ13C was comparable in the six species, which suggested that both expanding and expanded leaves contained organic matter fixed under similar intercellular and ambient CO2 concentration (Ci/Ca). High leaf C/N and negative δ15N values found in this habitat were consistent with the extreme soil N-deficiency. Analysis of Chl and carotenoids showed that expanding leaves had an incomplete development of photosynthetic antenna when compared to adult leaves. Dynamic inactivation of photosystem 2 (PS2) at midday was observed at both leaf ages as Fv/Fm decreased compared to predawn values. Adult leaves reached overnight Fv/Fm ratios typical of healthy leaves. Overnight recovery of Fv/Fm in expanding leaves was incomplete. F0 remained unchanged from midday to predawn and Fv tended to increase from midday to predawn. The recovery from midday depression observed in adult leaves suggested an acclimatory down-regulation associated with photo-protection and non-damage of PS2.
The focus of this paper is on the analysis of the influence of near-bed turbulence structures with the inclusion of existing coherent structures on the entrainment of saltating particles in a water stream from the Lagrangian perspective. The interactions between turbulence structures and initiation of particles movement is the key for better understanding of the physics of sediment transport and particles behaviour. These aims are addressed by use of a 3D relevant model of spherical saltating particles, in which a special procedure has been designed to produce coherent structures. In this method, the spectra of turbulent kinetic energy, consisting of four ranges, are used to generate the time series of turbulent velocities in the streamwise, vertical and transversal directions. Numerical results suggest that the initiation of sediment movement is strongly correlated to positive streamwise velocity fluctuations and as such, supports earlier laboratory experimental and field observations, showing that the sweeps and outward interactions play a crucial role in the initiation of saltating particles’ movement.
The distribution of rare earth elements (REEs) in the fern Dicranopteris dichotoma Bernh plants from a light rare earth elements mine (LRM) and a non-mining (NM) area in Longnan county of Jiangxi province, China were investigated by means of inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry, transmission electron microscopy, and energy-dispersive X-ray microanalysis. The photosynthetic characteristics of D. dichotoma were studied by chlorophyll (Chl) a fluorescence kinetics. Contents of REEs in the lamina and the root of D. dichotoma were higher than those in soils, and were mainly distributed in lamina. A part of them was found in the chloroplast. By comparing with D. dichotoma from NM area, the efficiency of photosystem 2 photochemistry and electron transport rate were significantly enhanced in lamina of the plant from LRM because most of REEs deposits were distributed along cell wall, in vacuole, and in chloroplast. High contents of REEs in lamina did not decrease the photosynthetic activities in LRM plants of D. dichotoma. Besides, D. dichotoma could change its β-carotene content to avoid the damaging effect of high REEs content. and L. F. Wang ... [et al.].
