Determination of modulated chlorophyll fluorescence coupled to measurements of the net photosynthetic rate (P^) leaf water potential has heen assessed as a screening method to score a set of twenty genotypes of barley {Hordeum vulgare L.) for drought tolerance. These methods can be ušed as rapid screening tests for water stress tolerance in barley, although applied alone they are appropriate indicators for a severe water stress. For genotypes growing under a mild water stress, it is necessary to use several screening tests simultaneously. Drought tolerant genotypes show smaller variations of photochemical quenching, P^, water use efficiency and leaf temperature than the drought sensitive ones.

2. Pojem čtenář v anglosaské kulturně-analytické tradici Cultural Studies: možné spojnice, parelely a přesahy

Příspěvek se zabývá problematikou čtenářství a čtení, jež představovala jedno z ústředních témat raných prací otců zakladatelů britské školy kulturálních studiích (Hoggart, Thompson, Williams) i vybraných amerických teoretiků (Altick). Nabízí spojnice s výzkumnou oblastí časově a tematicky do značné míry spřízněnou, tj. tematizováním centrálně řízeného čtenáře a čtení v tzv. socialistických zemí. K těmto společným rysům patřila kromě výrazné marxistické orientace snaha kriticky narušovat privilegované postavení tzv. elitní kultury/textu coby předmětu bádání; rehabilitace neelitního čtenáře (common reader); a hledání vazby mezi fenomény čtení, čtenář a potažmo gramotnost a sociálně-ekonomickým pokrokem. Na čtení se v obou tradicích navaluje obrovská sociální zátěž a má sklon se transformovat z kategorie analytické v kategorii preskriptivní a axiologickou. and This article is concerned with readership and reading, a key theme in the work of the founding fathers of British Cultural Studies, like Hoggart, Thompson, and Williams, and related American scholars, such as Altick. The article offers links with research areas related to this tradition in terms of time and concerns, that is, analyses of the centrally controlled readership in the ‘socialist’ countries. In addition to a Marxist orientation, the common features include an attempt to critically challenge the privileged position of the ‘elite culture/text’ as an object of enquiry, the rehabilitation of the non-elite (common) reader, as well as a search for the relation between the phenomena of reading, the reader, and literacy on the one hand and socio-economic progress on the other. In both traditions, reading is burdened with enormous social expectations and tends to be transformed from an analytical category into a prescriptive, axiological one.
