The Institute of Philosophy of ASCR on November 26-27, 2012 hosted two lectures by Howard Hotson, professor of early modern intellectual history at the University of Oxford and steering committee chair of the Council for the Defence of British Universities. In his lecture Networking the Republic of Letters: an Introduction to Early Modern Letters Online Professor Hotson introduced his project on which he cooperates with scientists at the Institute of Philosophy of ASCR. In his lecture, Understanding the Global University Crisis: The Marketisation of English Higher Education in International Perspective, he criticizes the British government reforms of higher education. and Gabriela Adámková.
The Learned Society's two-day General Assembly took place at the Hall of Patriots of the Collegium Carolinum and at the ASCR's main building 16-17 May 2010. At this General Assembly, Růžena Dostálová, well-known byzantologist, and Martin Černohorský, renowned mathematician, were bestowed the Medal of the Learned Society of the Czech Republic for their contributions to the advancement of science. The Scientist Awards were presented to mathematician Miloslav Druckmüller and parasitologist Jan Tachezy. The Junior Scientist Awards were given to Milan Orlit and Dana Pokorná. The Learned Society Awards were presented to pedagogues Karel Lichtenberg and Jiří Herman for their significant work as young students in the advancement of science. The Grammar School Student Awards were presented to 10 students from Czech primary schools. and Gabriela Adámková.
We highlight an interview with Věra Kůrková, the head of Department of Theoretical Computer Sciences at the Institute of Computer Sciences of the ASCR. The project of restoration and preservation of the Bečov Castle, which received the Europa Nostra European Award in 2010, is described in another story. The project was awarded "for a thoroughly prepared conservation that would preserve the original architectonic element.'
