The paper presents the logical milieu of the Paradox of ravens, identified by Hempel in his Studies in the Logic of Confirmation. It deals with Hempel’s interpretations of Nicod’s criterion of confirmation as well as with its inadmissible consequences. I, subsequently, suggest an epistemological and semantic specification of empirical properties, i.e., of their identity; then I formulate a criterion of the test of properties expressed by empirical hypothesis. Finally, I propose a procedural conception of confirmation by means of the testing procedure schema. The confirmation is, therefore, conceived as an attribute which can be ascribed to a hypothesis through the process of its testing. The methods of testing are central to the hypothesis’s qualifica-tion as confirmed., Příspěvek prezentuje logické prostředí paradoxu havranů, které Hempel identifikoval ve svých studiích v logice potvrzení. Zabývá se Hempelovými výklady Nicodova kritéria potvrzení a jeho nepřípustnými důsledky. Následně navrhuji epistemologickou a sémantickou specifikaci empirických vlastností, tj. Jejich identity; pak formuluji kritérium testu vlastností vyjádřené empirickou hypotézou. Na závěr navrhuji procedurální koncepci potvrzení pomocí schématu testovacího postupu. Potvrzení je proto koncipováno jako atribut, který může být připsán hypotéze v procesu jeho testování. Metody testování jsou ústředním bodem kvalifikace hypotézy jako potvrzené., and Lukáš Bielik

4. Ideal-Model descriptions and truth

In scientific practice, we find ideal models that rely on a sort of idealization. These ideal-model descriptions are usually construed as distorted representations of some real system. As such, the ideal-model descriptions count as appeals to (scientific) fictions. Here, I present a category of ideal-model descriptions which – even though involving some idealization assumptions – are nevertheless true. These cases come out as puzzling though. 9. Testovateľnosť a význam observačných a teoretických termínov

Carnap’s analysis of the language of science had presupposed too close a connection between the semantics and testability. The core problem of the logical empiricist tradition was to show how to provide the interpretation of theoretical terms and hence the explanation of their application to observable entities by means of observation terms. It is argued that the utilization of a much more expressive semantic theory which identifies meanings with hyperintensional entities leads to a clarification of the competencies of semantics and methodology. It is claimed that the observability or unobservability of term’s referents does not determine the meaning of the term. Carnap’s reduction sentences are therefore conceived only as methodological devices for the determination of unobservables via the theory-presupposed observable aspects., Carnapova analýza jazyka vědy předpokládala příliš úzkou souvislost mezi sémantikou a testovatelností. Hlavním problémem logické empirické tradice bylo ukázat, jak poskytnout výklad teoretických pojmů a tím i vysvětlení jejich aplikace na pozorovatelné entity pomocí pozorovacích termínů. Tvrdí se, že využití mnohem výraznější sémantické teorie, která identifikuje význam s hyperintenzionálními entitami, vede k objasnění kompetencí sémantiky a metodiky. To je prohlašoval, že pozorovatelnost nebo unobservability of referents termínu nemá určovat význam termínu. 10. The demarcation problem of laws of nature

The paper focuses on the problem of identification of laws of nature and their demarcation from other kinds of regularities. The problem is approached from the viewpoint of several metaphysical, epistemological, logical and methodological criteria. Firstly, several dominant approaches to the problem are introduced. Secondly, the logical and semantic explicatory framework - Transparent Intensional Logic - is presented for the sake of clarification of logical forms of sentences that are supposed to express the laws of nature. Finally, a complementary strategy to the demarcation problem is proposed, including reconsideration of relevant metaphysical, epistemological, logical and methodological requirements and principles behind the former conceptions., Příspěvek je zaměřen na problematiku identifikace přírodních zákonů a jejich vymezení od jiných druhů zákonitostí. K problému je přistupováno z hlediska několika metafyzických, epistemologických, logických a metodologických kritérií. Nejprve je představeno několik dominantních přístupů k problému. Za druhé, logický a sémantický vysvětlující rámec - Transparent Intensional Logic - je prezentován pro objasnění logických forem vět, které mají vyjadřovat přírodní zákony. V neposlední řadě je navržena komplementární strategie k demarkačnímu problému, včetně přehodnocení relevantních metafyzických, epistemologických, logických a metodických požadavků a principů, které jsou v pozadí dřívějších koncepcí., and Lukáš Bielik
