Jako významný doplněk textu je otištěno Kutnarovo krátké úvodní slovo k přednášce Karla Kučery o Jaroslavu Werstadtovi v Historickém klubu 28. května 1970. and František Kutnar's paper The Historian Jaroslav Werstadt is based on his funeral oration given at Werstadt's cremation on 17th January 1970 in Prague-Strašnice. Kutnar wrote it as an obituary for the Czechoslovak Historical Journal, but the normalization-period editorial board refused to print it. This edition is based on a comparison of five versions of the text in František Kutnar's private papers at the National Museum Archive (Box 34, Inventory No. 822). This paper provides an outline of Werstadt's life and work, with special emphasis on his contribution to the field of theory and methodology in historical studies. Like all Kutnar's texts, it has been systematically thought out and written up with close attention paid to both content and form. Kutnar's brief introduction to the lecture by Karel Kučera on Jaroslav Werstadt at the History Club on 28th May 1970 also provides a substantial addition to the text. (Translated by Melvyn Clarke.)
This modest edited collection of some 21 (or 22) items of correspondence between the historian Josef Vítězslav Šimák and President Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk, his Chancellor Přemysl Šámal and the Office of the President of the Republic between 1919 and 1931 illustrates the nature of relations between these figures, who at a professional and personal level only crossed paths, but who at the state-political and the social level could not entirely ignore one other. This correspondence contains both official and personal letters (though only Šimák, not Masaryk, wrote the personal letters) and clearly depicts operations at the Office of the President of the Republic. It also demonstrates Šimák's standing in historical studies, his awkward position as a university professor in a new field (Czechoslovak state historical ''homeland'' studies at Charles University) and his ongoing interest in support for homeland studies research and public education work. Historik J. V. Šimák a J. V. Krouský, sedlák z Katusic, si v letech 1930-1934 vyměnili nejméně 22 kusů korespondence, jejíž plné znění přináší předkládaná edice. Korespondence se týká převážně vydání ojedinělé edice Dopisování Jana Krouského a jeho přátel (1840-76). Zachycuje přípravu knihy, která zachovala paměť o historii národního obrození v dolním Pojizeří. Představuje zároveň sedláka J. V. Krouského, který se stará o udržení rodové paměti a předává toto poselství dalším generacím., Between 1930 and 1934 historian J. V. Šimák (1870-1941) and J. V. Krouský (1884-1945), a farmer from Katusice, exchanged at least 22 items of correspondence, which are presented in full by the present publication. This correspondence primarily involves the publication of the unique edition of Dopisování Jana Krouského a jeho přátel (1840-76) - Correspondence between Jan Krouský and his friends (1840-76). It depicts the preparations for the book which preserved the memory of the history of the National Revival in the Lower Jizera region. It also presents the farmer J. V. Krouský, who was concerned with maintaining the family memory and presenting its message to future generations. (Translated by Melvyn Clarke.), and Překlad resumé: Melvyn Clarke
Na počátku ustavení Místopisné komise České akademie věd a umění byla idea instituce koordinující mezioborový výzkum (na poli historie a filologie) a řešící praktické (revize a přejmenování místních jmen) i vědecké úkoly (zachycení vývoje místních jmen). Komise byla složená z odborníků různých oborů (filologové, historici a geografové), z výzkumu i z praxe. Fungovala téměř kontinuálně v letech 1913-1952 především díky aktivitám několika výrazných osobností (předsedové Josef Zubatý, Josef Janko, Josef Dobiáš, jednatelé Josef Vítězslav Šimák a Antonín Profous). Věnovala se převážně praktickým úkolům - vypracovávala expertní posudky k návrhům změn resp. ustálení místních jmen. Trvalou hodnotu má vědecké dílo Antonína Profouse Místní jména v Čechách. Jejich vznik, význam a původní změny (vyd. 1947-1957), které vznikalo zčásti za podpory Místopisné komise. Zmapování historie komise přispívá k poznání institucionalizace bádání v pomezních vědních oborech, na pozadí česko-německého soupeření. Otázky revizí a úprav místopisného názvosloví byly pozorně sledovány představiteli státní správy a samosprávy, jejichž vliv na úkoly Místopisné komise byl velký v porovnání s nepatrnou dotací výzkumu., In the early days of the establishment of the Topographic Committee at the Czech Academy of Sciences and Arts the idea behind the institute was to coordinate interdisciplinary research (involving history and philology) and to deal with practical (review and renaming of local names) and scholarly tasks (recording the development of local names). The committee was made up of specialists from various fields (philologists, historians and geographers) both in research and in practice. It operated almost continually between 1913 and 1952, thanks in particular to the activities of several prominent figures (chaired by Josef Zubatý, Josef Janko and Josef Dobiáš, with secretaries Josef Vítězslav Šimák and Antonín Profous). It focused primarily on practical tasks - drawing up expert reports on proposals for local names to alter or become fixed. Of permanent merit is the scholarly work by Antonín Profous Místní jména v Čechách. Jejich vznik, význam a původní změny - Local names in Bohemia. Their origin, meaning and original changes (published 1947-1957), which came about in part with the support of the Topographic Committee. Charting the history of this committee helps us to understand the institutionalization of research within marginal fields and within the context of Czech-German rivalry. Questions surrounding the review of, and alterations to, topographical nomenclature were carefully followed by state administration and local government representatives, whose influence on Topographical Committee tasks was great in view of the tiny grants for research., and Překlad resumé: Melvyn Clarke
Edice přináší 33 dopisů, dopisnic, pohledů a tištěných přání, případně poděkování, které si v letech 1956-1969 vyměnili historici Jaroslav Werstadt a Jiří Špét. V dopisech se odráží činnost Historického klubu, v němž byla zachována kontinuita se staršími způsoby vědecké práce, a vědecké zájmy J. Špéta, který se ve sledovaném období výrazně zabýval dějinami české historiografie., This edition presents 33 letters, postcards, greetings and thank-you cards, exchanged between historians Jaroslav Werstadt and Jiří Špét from 1956 to 1969. Špét's correspondence is stored at the ASCR Archive among Jaroslav Werstadt's personal papers and in the History Club fonds, while Werstadt's correspondence is stored among Jiří Špét's personal papers. This correspondence is an interesting contribution on the history of Czech historiography during the 1950s and 1960s. Its writers built up a professional and personal rapport while Werstadt held the office of Director at the History Club (1945-1964) and Špét was its Secretary and then Honorary Secretary (1956-1966). Their letters reflect the activities taking place at the History Club which maintained continuity with older forms of research work and the scholarly interests of J. Špét, who during the period under review was substantially involved in the history of Czech historiography. (Translated by Melvyn Clarke.), and Překlad resumé: Melvyn Clarke
