Several quite severe droughts occurred in Europe in the 21st century; three of them (2003, 2012 and 2015) hit also Slovakia. The Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) and Standardized Precipitation and Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI) were used for assessment of meteorological drought occurrence. The research was established on discharge time series representing twelve river basins in Slovakia within the period 1981–2015. Sequent Peak Algorithm method based on fixed threshold, three parametric Weibull and generalized extreme values distribution GEV, factor and multiple regression analyses were employed to evaluate occurrence and parameters of hydrological drought in 2003, 2011–2012 and 2015, and the relationship among the water balance components. Changes in runoff parameters are very important for Slovakia, where stream-flow discharges, being supplied by precipitation and groundwater runoff, are preferentially influenced by climatic conditions. Therefore, teleconnections between runoff parameters, climate parameters and global atmospheric drivers such as North Atlantic Oscillation, Southern Pacific Oscillation, Quasi-biennial oscillation and solar activity were studied in the Nitra River Basin, Slovakia. Research was mostly based on records of 80 years (1931-2010) for discharges and baseflow, and 34 years for groundwater heads. Methods of autocorrelation, spectral analysis, cross-correlation and coherence function were used. Results of auto-correllograms for discharges, groundwater heads and base flow values showed a very distinct 11-year and 21-year periodicity. Spectrogram analysis documented the 11-year, 7.8-year, 3.6-year and 2.4-year periods in the discharge, precipitation and air temperature time series. The same cycles except of 11-years were also identified in the long-term series of the North Atlantic Oscillation and Southern Pacific Oscillation indices. The cycle from approximately 2.3 to 2.4-years is most likely connected with Quasi-biennial oscillation. The close negative correlation between the North Atlantic Oscillation winter index and the hydrological surface and groundwater parameters can be used for their prediction within the same year and also for one year in advance.
Drought as a natural phenomenon becomes more often the subject of the research. It is because of the increasing frequency of extreme climatic events also in mild climate conditions. Groundwater drought indices could be derived for different groundwater parameters, among them for base flow, groundwater head stage, spring yield, or groundwater recharge. Base flow drought assessment methods were proposed in the paper. Base flow values were separated from the discharge hydrograms using the new HydroOffice 2010 program package, lately developed by Gregor. The base flow drought severity index was applied, calculated as the value of the base flow drought deficit volume divided by the drought duration. After that, the standardized base flow drought severity index was proposed as the ratio of the base flow drought index and the average long-term annual base flow. Proposed methods were applied in the Nitra River basin. Base flow drought occurrence was characterized also from the seasonality point of view. and Sucho ako jeden z prírodných javov sa čoraz častejšie stáva predmetom výskumu. Príčinou je narastajúca frekvencia výskytu extrémnych klimatických situácií aj v miernych zemepisných šírkach. Klasifikačné kritériá výskytu sucha v podzemnej vode možno odvodiť pre rôzne parametre podzemnej vody, napríklad pre hodnoty podzemného odtoku, úrovne hladiny podzemnej vody, výdatnosti prameňa alebo dopĺňania zásob. V príspevku sú navrhnuté metódy hodnotenia sucha v podzemnom odtoku. Hodnoty podzemného odtoku boli z hydrogramu prietokov odseparované pomocou nového štatistického balíka HydroOffice 2010, ktorý bol v nedávnej minulosti vytvorený Gregorom. Index závažnosti sucha bol vypočítaný ako podiel nedostatkového objemu podzemného odtoku a dĺžky trvania sucha. Následne bola hodnota indexu závažnosti sucha normalizovaná vydelením dlhodobou priemernou hodnotou podzemného odtoku. Navrhnutá metodika bola použitá pre povodie toku Nitra. Výskyt sucha v podzemnej vode bol hodnotený aj z pohľadu jeho sezónnosti.
Hydrological models are widely used tools to solve a broad range of hydrological issues. Each model has its own structure defining inter-relationships of hydrological balance components, and comparative differences in the models’ inner structure must be taken into account when discrepancies result from the same data. Results of base flow simulation by three different models BILAN, FRIER and HBV-light were compared based on knowledge of the models’ internal structure. It was proven that the courses of modelled parameters are quite similar, but that the respective values differ. The highest base flow values were simulated by the BILAN model, due to the threshold value of the soil moisture storage incorporated within this model’s structure. The lowest values were obtained by HBV-light model. Simulated base flow values were compared with groundwater heads and minimum monthly discharges. This comparison showed that the base flow values in the Nitra catchment at Nedožery profile simulated by BILAN and FRIER models are closer to the reality than those, simulated by HBV-light model. and Hydrologické modely sú nástrojmi, často využívanými pri riešení širokého spektra hydrologických problémov. Každý z modelov má svoju vlastnú štruktúru, definujúcu vzájomné vzťahy prvkov hydrologickej bilancie. Preto musí byť pri posudzovaní rozdielnych výsledkov získaných použitím tých istých vstupných dát brané do úvahy porovnanie rozdielov vo vnútornej štruktúre modelov. V príspevku boli porovnávané výsledky simulácie podzemného odtoku tromi rozličnými modelmi BILAN, FRIER a HBV-light, berúc do úvahy znalosti o vnútornej štruktúre jednotlivých modelov. Bolo dokumentované, že priebehy modelovaných parametrov sú veľmi podobné, no získané hodnoty sa líšia. Najvyššie hodnoty podzemného odtoku boli simulované modelom BILAN, v dôsledku faktu, že v modeli je zabudovaná pevná limitná hodnota pre veľkosť zásoby vody v pôde. Najnižšie hodnoty podzemného odtoku boli získané modelom HBV-light. Simulované hodnoty podzemného odtoku boli porovnané s priebehom úrovne hladiny podzemnej vody a s minimálnymi mesačnými prietokmi. Toto porovnanie ukázalo, že hodnoty podzemného odtoku v povodí Nitry po profil Nedožery simulované modelmi BILAN a FRIER sú bližšie k reálnemu stavu než hodnoty simulované modelom HBV-light.
Areas built by Neogene volcanic complexes are located in the central and eastern part of Slovakia covering about 10 % of the territory. They belong to the Inner Western Carpathians. The research was divided into two phases. In the first one, primary data from the Geochemical atlas of SR concerning groundwater from neovolcanic complexes were statistically processed and analyzed. In the second phase, field and laboratory methods, methods of classification, statistical and graphical methods were used. The results showed that the chemical composition and physical properties of groundwater are formed by the character of the rock environment, by the depth of circulation and also by properties of source waters. Main features of chemical composition reflecting the neovolcanic origin of groundwater are low TDS value varying by analyzed samples between 85.82 mg l-1 (Veľká Lehota) and 396.48 mg l-1 (Pukanec), presence of SiO2 in the amounts up to 41.76 mg l-1 (Podzámčok), presence of aggressive CO2 in amounts up to 25.19 mg l-1 (Lučina). Five groundwater chemical types were distinguished. The most frequent was the Ca-MgHCO3-SO4 type. In majority cases only primary compounds of the groundwater composition were found. Only in the case of Remetské Hámre groundwater the anthropogenic compound - nitrates was estimated. and Oblasti budované neogénnymi vulkanickými komplexmi sa na Slovensku vyskytujú v jeho centrálnej a východnej časti, pričom tvoria približne 10 % celkovej rozlohy územia. Geologicky patria k Vnútorným Západným Karpatom. Výskumné práce boli rozložené do dvoch fáz. V prvej z nich boli štatisticky a graficky spracované zdrojové dáta z Geochemického atlasu SR týkajúce sa fyzikálnych vlastností a chemického zloženia podzemných vôd pochádzajúcich z neovulkanických komplexov. V druhej fáze boli vykonané terénne a laboratórne práce, použité klasifikačné, štatistické a grafické metódy na analýzu získaných dát. Výsledky výskumu ukázali, že chemické zloženie a fyzikálne vlastnosti podzemných vôd sú formované charakterom horninového prostredia, hĺbkou obehu a tiež vlastnosťami zdrojových vôd. Hlavnými parametrami odrážajúcimi pôvod podzemnej vody v neovulkanitoch sú nízke hodnoty celkovej mineralizácie, ktoré sa u analyzovaných vôd pohybovali medzi 85,82 mg l-1 (Veľká Lehota) a 396,48 mg l-1 (Pukanec), prítomnosť SiO2 v množstvách až do 41,76 mg l-1 (Podzámčok), prítomnosť agresívneho CO2 v množstvách až do 25,19 mg l-1 (Lučina). Bolo rozlíšených 5 chemických typov podzemných vôd. Najčastejšie sa vyskytoval typ Ca-Mg-HCO3-SO4. Vo väčšine prípadov boli v chemickom zložení podzemných vôd dokumentované iba primárne zložky. Len v prípade podzemnej vody z Remetských Hámrov bola určená antropogénna zložka - dusičnany.
