Distribution of a word across contexts has proved to be a very useful ap- proximation of the word’s meaning. This paper reflects on the recent attempts to enhance distributional (or vector space) semantics of words with meaning composition, in particular with Fregean compositionality. I discuss the nature and performance of distributional semantic representations and argue against the thesis that semantics is in some sense identical with distribution (which seems to be a strong assumption of the compositional efforts). I propose instead that distribution is merely a reflection of semantics, and a substantially imperfect one. That raises some doubts regarding the very idea of obtaining semantic representations for larger wholes (phrases, sentences) by combining the distributional representations of particular items. In any case, I reject the generally unquestioned assumption that formal semantics provides a good theory of semantic composition, which it would be desirable to combine with distributional semantics (as a theory that is highly successful on the lexical field). I suggest that a positive alternative to the strong reading of the distributional hypothesis can be seen in the philosophy of inferentialism with respect to language meaning. I argue that the spirit of inferentialism is reasonably compatible with the current practice of distributional semantics, and I discuss the motivations for as well as the obstacles in the way of implementing the philosophical position in a computational framework., Ukázalo se, že rozložení slova napříč kontextem je velmi užitečným přiblížením významu slova. In this paper, I focus on the notion of expressive completeness in Robert Brandom’s Making It Explicit. For Brandom as a normative pragmatist, a theory of meaning is expressively complete if it specifies a human practice that is sufficient to confer on expressions conceptual contents so rich that the very conferring practice can be described by means of these expressions. I put the notion of expressive completeness in contrast with the related, but non-identical notion of self-referentiality of a semantic theory. Further, I examine the position of the concept in Brandom’s philosophical project: I assess the justification Brandom provides for his claim of expressive completeness of the presented theory, and I outline the consequences he can draw for his overall project provided that expressive completeness is achieved. Whether it is actually achieved, remains however an open question., V tomto příspěvku se zaměřuji na pojetí expresivní úplnosti v tom, jak to dělá Robert Brandom. Pro Brandom jako normativní pragmatist, teorie významu je výslovně kompletní jestliže to specifikuje lidskou praxi to je dostačující, aby udělil výrazy pojmový obsah tak bohatý že velmi svěřující praxe může být popsána pomocí těchto výrazů. Pojem expresivní úplnost jsem postavil do kontrastu s příbuzným, ale ne identickým pojmem sebekontroly sémantické teorie. Dále zkoumám pozici konceptu ve filosofickém projektu Brandomu: Posuzuji, že ospravedlnění Brandom poskytuje jeho vyjádření výrazové úplnosti předložené teorie, a nastíním následky, které může čerpat pro jeho celkový projekt za předpokladu, že je dosaženo výrazné úplnosti. The article provides a classification of the static spatial relations expressed by the prepositions v(e) and na (in most contexts translated as in and on) in contemporary Czech, based on the data of The Czech National Corpus and the internet. Both prepositions, used with a nominal phrase in the locative, may refer to several distinct relations between the determined and the determining spatial object (usually, but not necessarily, various types of localization). For each of the prepositions, these relations are classified with special attention to possible variation between the two (and some other) prepositions in describing the same situation. Such detailed analysis of prepositional meanings and variation seems useful e. g. in advanced learning of Czech as a foreign language. The description of the static spatial meanings of the prepositions is a proper basis for describing their other spatial (dynamic) as well as non-spatial (ab-stract) meanings.
