The terms denotation and reference are commonly used as synonyms. A more fine-grained analysis of natural language as offered by TIL shows that we can distinguish these terms in the case of empirical expressions. This contribution endeavours to show the substance of Machovec’s philo¬sophical thinking in the context of his time and the coordinates of his personal life. Tis we can best trace in the problems the seeking meaning in life. That is for Machovec a lifelong concern. He understands humans and their discovery of meaning in this world as a complex problem. Its core is a cultivated orientation of each individual in the world. As a “master of dialogue”, Machovec shows the possibilities of seeking self-determination in this way.
A traditional objection to inferentialism states that not all inferences can be meaning-constitutive and therefore inferentialism has to comprise an analytic-synthetic distinction. As a response, Peregrin argues that meaning is a matter of inferential rules and only the subset of all the valid inferences for which there is a widely shared corrective behaviour corresponds to rules and so determines meaning. Unfortunately, Peregrin does not discuss what counts as ''widely shared''. In the paper, I argue for an empirical plausibility of Peregrin’s proposal. The aim of the paper is to show that we can find examples of meaning-constitutive linguistic action, which sustain Peregrin’s response. The idea is supported by examples of meaning modulation. If Peregrin is right, then we should be able to find specific meaning modulations in which a new meaning is publicly available and modulated in such a way that it has a potential to be widely shared. I believe that binding modulations – a specific type of meaning modulations – satisfy this condition. and Tradiční námitka proti inferencionalismu uvádí, že ne všechny závěry mohou mít smysl-konstitutivní, a proto inferencionalismus musí obsahovat analytický a syntetický rozdíl. Bohužel, Peregrin nehovoří o tom, co se počítá za ''široce sdílené''. V příspěvku argumentuji za empirickou hodnovernost návrhu Peregrina. Cílem práce je ukázat, že můžeme nalézt příklady smysluplné jazykové činnosti, které podporují Peregrinovu reakci. Tato myšlenka je podporována příklady významové modulace. Pokud má Peregrin pravdu, pak bychom měli najít konkrétní modulace smyslu, ve kterých je nový význam veřejně dostupný a modulovaný takovým způsobem, že má potenciál být široce sdílený. Věřím, že závazná modulace - specifický typ modulace významu - tuto podmínku splňují.
Studie se věnuje jednomu z aspektů tvůrčí činnosti německého filosofa J. G. Hamanna, bezprostředního předchůdce hnutí Sturm und Drang a jednoho z prvních kritiků I. Kanta. Tímto aspektem je nesrozumitelnost jeho textů, která je ovšem v německém prostředí téměř příslovečná. Autor popisuje základní charakteristické rysy, jimiž se vyznačují Hamannovy texty, a hledá důvody, kvůli nimž Hamann zvolil právě formu literární reprezentace. Důležité je upozornění na skutečnost, že sám Hamann zanechal klíč k dešifrování vlastní nesrozumitelnosti: skrývá se pod metaforou archipelagu, souostroví složeného z množství malých ostrůvků rozumění, mezi nimiž se rozlévá moře. Chce-li kdo Hamannovi porozumět, musí se „naučit plavat“ – ovšem ve smyslu známého Sókratova výroku o Hérakleitovi a „délském potápěči“. Závěr studie představuje hypotézu, jejímž prostřednictvím chce autor otevřít diskusi jak o faktickém nerozumění Hamannovi, tak o jeho livonském pojetí osvícenství., The study addresses one aspect of the creative activity of the German philosopher J. G. Hamann, a direct predecessor of the Sturm und Drang movement and one of the first critics of Kant. This aspect is the incomprehensibility of his texts, a quality that, however, could almost be considered proverbial in the milieu of German philosophy. The author describes the basic characteristics that distinguish Hamann’s texts and seeks the reasons why Hamann might have chosen this form of literary representation. It is important to note that Hamann himself left a clue, hiding under the metaphor of the archipelago, for the deciphering of his own incomprehensibility: an archipelago composed of a number of diminutive islets of understanding, between which the sea flows. If somebody wants to understand Hamann, he must “learn how to swim”, but do so in the sense of Socrates’ famous statement about Heraclitus and the “Delian diver”. The conclusion of the study presents a hypothesis by which the author hopes to open a discussion both about the factual misunderstandings of Hamann’s work, as well as about his Livonian conception of the Enlightenment., and Die Studie ist einem Aspekt des Schaffens des deutschen Philosophen J. Der Autor beschreibt die Grundzüge von Hamanns Texten und sucht nach Gründen, warum Hamann gerade die Form der literarischen Darstellung wählte. Wichtig ist dabei die Tatsache, dass Hamann selbst einen Schlüssel zur Dechiffrierung der eigenen Unverständlichkeit hinterließ, der sich in der Metapher des Archipels verbirgt; damit ist eine Inselgruppe inmitten des Meeres gemeint, die sich aus einer Vielzahl von kleineren Inseln des Verstehens zusammensetzt. Für ein Verständnis Hamanns ist es notwendig, „schwimmen zu lernen“ – freilich im Sinne der bekannten Aussage Sokrates über Heraklit und den „delischen Taucher“. Zum Schluss der Studie wird eine Hypothese aufgestellt, mit der der Autor eine Diskussion über das tatsächliche Nichtverstehen Hamanns sowie über dessen livonische Auffassung von der Aufklärung eröffnen möchte.
According to Fodor, robustness of meaning is an essential aspect of intentionality, and his causal theory of content can account for it. Robustness of meaning refers to the fact that tokenings of a symbol are occasionally caused by instantiations of properties which are not expressed by the symbol. This, according to Fodor, is the source of the phenomenon of misrepresentation. We claim that Fodor’s treatment of content and misrepresentation is infected with a couple of flaws. After criticizing Fodor’s theory of content, we propose a new theory of content which explains how misrepresentation is possible as a result of meaning-forming causation, and extend it to account for the property of robustness of meaning., Podle Fodora je robustnost významu základním aspektem záměrnosti a jeho kauzální teorie obsahu jej může vysvětlit. Logical analysis of natural language (LANL) based on TIL defines meaning (Frege’s sense) in a procedural way, resulting in the following thesis: The meaning of an expression is independent of context. The meaning (in the case of non-indexical expressions concept) is thus an abstract procedure, which is explicated in TIL as (well-defined) construction. What does depend on context is the way in which the meaning has to be handled. From this viewpoint we can distinguish three kinds of context: (i) hyperintensional context; (ii) intensional context; (iii) extensional context., Logická analýza přirozeného jazyka (LANL) na základě TIL definuje význam (Fregeho smysl ) v procesním způsobem, což má za následek následující práce: Význam výrazu je nezávislá na kontextu . The paper deals with the word without and its role in those kinds of collocations in which it has a meaning-carrying function. It is assumed that the meaning of without in the kinds of collocations under scrutiny is context independent in that it can be explicated by a singles cheme: For every ξ,ξ ...ξ holds, that Π(ξ,ξ ...ξ) if not Θ(ξ , ξ ... ξ ), where Π, Θ are propositions or propositional functions (predicates) and ξ , ξ ... ξ are relevant variables, whose range is determined by that following after the word without. The scheme varies with the variable type to which without is applied purely as a certain kind of operator. The study raises the question of the sustainability of Husserl’s early theory of linguistic meaning. In order to answer it, the text presents Husserl’s theory of linguistic meaning as it is found in his Logical Investigations and discusses a serious problem which follows from Husserl’s own presuppositions. This problem involves the question of the expressibility of the quality of the intentional essence of the act –“quality” being Husserl’s term roughly corresponding to the later and more common concept of propositional attitude. The study argues for the lack of theoretical means sufficient for the expression of the quality as well as for the fact that the expressibility of the quality is presupposed in the meaning of the linguistic expressions used in the solitary life of the speaker.
My aim is to show that once we appreciate how Searle (1958) fills in the details of his account of proper names - which I will dub the presuppositional view - and how we might supplement it further, we are in for a twofold discovery. First, Searle’s account is crucially unlike the so-called cluster-of-descriptions view, which many philosophers take Searle to have held. Second, the presuppositional view he did hold is interesting, plausible, and worthy of serious reconsideration.
