In June 1997, the ASCR signed an agreement with the Max Planck Institute for Quantum Optics in Garching (Germany) and became the operator of the Asterix IV laser. This facility provides the basis for experimental research in the field of high-power lasers and their applications, notably in the physics of laser plasmas. The Prague Asterix Laser System (PALS) has been made use of by the wider international research community. From 2000-2003, the European experiments at PALS were supported through the 5th Framework Programme of EU, in the frame of the Transnational Access to Major Research Infrastructure action. Since 2004, the laboratory participates at an Integrated Infrastucture Initiative project of the Consortium (6th FP). and Marina Hužvárová.
ELI will become a new scientific infrastructure supporting research in the area of lasers, mainly oriented onto the investigation and applications of laser-matter interaction at the highest intensity level (more than six orders of magnitude higher than today's laser intensity). The ELI project, a collaboration of 13 European countries, will comprise three branches: Ultra High Field Science, Attosecond Laser Science, High Energy Beam Science. and Markéta Holubová.
V České republice vzniká první evropská laserová výzkumná infrastruktura určená pro výzkum a aplikační projekty v oblasti interakce světla s hmotou. Očekávají se od ní průlomové objevy v materiálech, nanotechnologiích, lékařství, zobrazování a diagnostice, optice, ale i nové technologie využitelné v průmyslu. Jak je u podobných zařízení běžné, stane se též atraktivním místem pro výchovu doktorandů, vědců a inženýrů. S laserovými centry ELI Beamlines a HiLASE i s rozvojovým potenciálem „vědeckého trojměstí“ na jižním okraji Prahy se 26. února 2015 seznámili ministr financí Andrej Babiš a vládní zmocněnkyně pro udržitelnost výzkumných center MŠMT Eva Kislingerová. and Marina Hužvárová.
Obecně už je známo, že v naší republice vzniká mezinárodní centrum s nejmodernějšími laserovými systémy: unikátní laserová infrastruktura pro špičkový výzkum v řadě oblastí i pro mezioborové aplikace ELI Beamlines je jedním ze tří pilířů ambiciózního evropského vědeckého projektu ELI (Extreme Light Infrastructure). Pro Českou republiku to však zdaleka nebude začátek od nuly: čeští, respektive českoslovenští badatelé se zapojili do laserového výzkumu od samého začátku. and Jana Olivová.
On the occasion of the Optics and Optoelectronics 2007 Congress (16-19 April 2007) Professor Theodor Hänsch, Nobel Prize Laureate in Physics in 2005, visited the PALS laboratory (see A decade of PALS) and received De Scientia et Humanitate Optime Meritis Medal. The founder of laser spectrometry and laser frequency comb techniques, which could lead to a detection of gravitational waves as well as holographic television, have been working on laser atomic clock as well as a laser spectrometry of hydrogen atom during last decade. and Lenka Kovaříková.
