V obou státech nebyla protektorátní nacistická ideologie vystřídána svobodným bádáním, nýbrž další povinnou ideologií, odmítající nejen předchozí práce německé, ale z velké části i ty v domácích jazycích. and The aim of the article is to provide a comprehensive evaluation of the history of Czech archaeology following the rise of Nazism in Germany and after the German occupation of Czechoslovakia. The text in particular presents the ethnic clashes influencing the institutional development of archaeology in Bohemia and Moravia, the roots of which stretch back to the period of the founding of the country in 1918. Also described are internal conflicts of authority among representatives of German Protectorate archaeology, which in fact had a greater impact on its development than antagonisms between members of the Czech and German archaeological community. The extent of the mandatory ideologization of the discipline in this period is likewise assessed. In this context, the Czech Lands provide a unique opportunity to study the relationship between Czech and German archaeology in a territory in which both ethnic groups were traditionally represented by distinctive cultural institutions, unlike, e.g., Poland, which did not have areas with a German majority prior to the Second World War. In post-war Czechoslovakia and Poland, the Nazi Protectorate ideology was replaced not by free research but rather by another mandatory ideology, one that rejected not only the preceding German work but also, to a large extent, work performed in the respective native languages.
Ernst Schäfer (1910-1992) byl německý zoolog, sběratel přírodnin a cestovatel známý zejména díky třem průkopnickým výpravám do Tibetu, území, kam se přírodovědci prakticky nedostali až do druhé poloviny 20. století. Třetí expedice z let 1938-39 je poněkud kontroverzní, neboť se stala součástí nacistické propagandy a její cíle nebyly čistě jen vědecké., Ernst Schäfer (1910–92) was a German zoologist, collector and explorer who is primarily known for his three pioneering expeditions to Tibet, which was virtually closed to science well into the second half of the 20th century. The third expedition, in 1938–39, was rather controversial as it became a part of Nazi propaganda and its goals were not purely scientific., and Jan Robovský, Jiří Hrubý.
Nakonec autor přibližuje reakce na první vydání i na kritické vydání spisu Mein Kampf a rekapituluje pokusy o jeho české vydání., In the form of an essay, the author comments here on the 2010 critical edition of Hitler´s mein Kampf (1925-26), edited by a team of historians from the Institute of Contemporary History in Munich, with additional asistance from others. He contemplates the nature and importance of this book and discusses its author and his meaning in the history of twentieth-century central Europe. He then discusses some of the ideas of Mein Kampf, and clarifies the historical context of the work, returning to the circumstances that led to its being written and published. He also discusses some of Hitler´s fellow travellers in the Nazi movement, who were of importance for this key work. The author brings up episodes in Hitler´s life, and pays particular attention to his still unclear transformation from an apolitical soldier into a zealous antisemite and political agitator of exceptional rhetorical skill, who was able to bewitch the German people and become their Führer. The author also discusses the difficulties that the editors of this critical edition had to struggle with, and he praises their work as utterly solid and astonishingly thorough, particularly the commentaries in the huge critical apparatus. The author concludes by discussing reactions both to the first edition of Mein Kampf and to this critical edition, and he discusses various attempts to publish a Czech edition., Milan Hauner., and Obsahuje bibliografii a bibliografické odkazy
Recenzentka přibližuje historický kontext vzniku obou publikací, jejich přednosti i slabiny. Má plné uznání pro zásadní přínos Conquestovy práce o masových represích ve druhé polovině třicátých let v Sovětském svazu (v původním znění: The great teror: a reassessment. S ohledem na současný československý kontext recenzentka upozorňuje na úskalí, že se zde v souvislosti s opožděným vydáváním děl, jako je Conquestův Velký teror, mohou reprodukovat hodnocení a diskuse, které jsou v západní vědě již dávno překonané., Considering their recent Czech translations, the reviewer first discusses the original historical context of the making of two publications, and considers their strengths and weaknesses – Michael Geyer and Sheila Fitzpatrick (eds), Beyond Totalitarianism Stalinism and Nazism Compared (Chicago: University of Chicago, 2008) and Robert Conquest, The Great Terror: A Reassessment (London: Pimlico, 1992). She fully acknowledges the fundamental contribution that Conquest’s work on mass repression in the Soviet Union in the second half of the 1930s made to the historiography of Communism in the 1960s, and that with this book Conquest came to be ranked amongst the classic Western Sovietologists. A comparison with the works on violence in the Stalinist régime compiled in the volume Beyond Totalitarianism: Stalinism and Nazism Compared, New York: Cambridge University Press, 2009, however, suggests that current views on the topic are considerably more nuanced and freer of totalitarian models than Conquest’s. With regard to the Czechoslovak context today, the reviewer points out the pitfalls that the belated publication of works like Conquest’s Great Terror can entail by offering assessments and discussions that have long been superseded in Western historiography., [autor recenze] Daniela Kolenovská., and Obsahuje bibliografii
Teprve od devadesátých let 20. století se dostávají k rukám historiků archivní materiály, jež umožňují získat ucelenou představu o Hahnově působení v době nacistického Německa a o jeho aktivním zapojení ve válečném uranovém výzkumu, jehož výsledkem mělo být sestrojení jaderných reaktorů a bomb. and The article aims to demystify a long-standing legend about Otto Hahn, who, as the Nobel Prize winner for chemistry for the discovery of the fission of heavy nuclei, is widely regarded as an academic figurehead in the world of science. He was considered a symbol of so-called German decency and responsibility; he was a model example of an anti-Nazi scientist who did not collaborate with the criminality of the regime in its warmongery. It was only from the 1990s onwards that historians gained access to new archival materials, which allowed for a comprehensive picture of Hahn’s work in Nazi Germany and his involvement in uranium research during wartime, whose aim was construction of nuclear reactors and bombs.
Twentieth-century photosynthesis research had strong roots in Germany, with the cell physiologist Otto H. Warburg being among its most influential figures. He was also one of the few scientists of Jewish ancestry who kept his post as a director of a research institution throughout the Nazi period. Based on archival sources, the paper investigates Warburg’s fate during these years at selected episodes. He neither collaborated with the regime nor actively resisted; he was harrassed by bureaucracy and denunciated to the secret police, but saved by powerful figures in economy, politics, and science. Warburg reciprocated this favour with problematic testimonies of political integrity after 1945. Warburg’s case, thus, defies wellestablished notions of how scientists in Germany lived and worked during the Nazi regime, and, therefore, helps provide a more nuanced perspective on this theme., K. Článek je odpovědí prof. Munzarové, jež kritizovala mou obhajobu sebevraždy za asistence lékaře. Článek upozorňuje na nedostatky v replice prof. Munzarové, jež plynou z autorčina podceňování normativní teorie. Mezi tyto nedostatky patří: přehlížení argumentů oponenta; zpochybňování morálního kreditu nositelů konkurenční teorie (utilitarismu) namísto její kritické analýzy; nevyjasněná vlastní teoretická východiska (lavírování mezi paternalismem a autonomií, vydávání „principu dvojího účinku“ za stanovisko zdravého rozumu); nepřesvědčivá verze „argumentu kluzkého svahu“ (ignorování diametrálních rozdílů mezi současnými požadavky některých pacientů na asistovanou smrt a nacistickým programem nedobrovolné eutanazie)., The article is an answer to prof. Munzarová who criticised my defence of physician‑assisted suicide. The article points to shortcomings in the reply of prof. Munzarová which flow from the author’s underestimation of normative theory. Among these shortcomings are the ignoring of the arguments of her opponent; her calling into question the moral credit of the proponents of the competing theory (utilitarianism) rather than a critical analysis; unclear theoretical principles (a switching between paternalism and autonomy, the presentation of the “principle of double-effect” as the standpoint of common sense); an unconvincing version of the “argument of the slippery slope” (ignoring the diametrical differences between the contemporary demand of some patients for assisted death and the Nazi programme of involuntary euthanasia)., and Tomáš Hříbek.
