The effects of drought stress induced by polyethylene glycol, PEG (molecular mass 6000) on some ecophysiological characteristics of two wild pistachio species, Mastic and Khinjuk (P. mutica and P. khinjuk) selected as root stocks for production of edible pistachio trees (P. vera) in Iran and Turkey, were studied. Net photosynthetic rate (PN), stomatal conductance (gs), chlorophyll (Chl) fluorescence parameters, leaf water potential (Ψ1), leaf osmotic potential (Ψπ), leaf osmotic adjustment (ΔΨπ), and Chl a and b were measured. All parameters were influenced by increase in concentra-tion of PEG in the nutrient solutions. PN, gs, and Chl a were significantly higher in P. mutica than in P. khinjuk but, compared to the control treatment, P. khinjuk showed a higher resistance to drought stress than P. mutica. and A. The interactive effect of elevated CO2 (EC) and moisture stress (MS) on Brassica juncea cv. Pusa Bold was studied using open-top chambers. The EC markedly increased net photosynthetic rate and internal CO2 concentration and reduced variable and maximal chlorophyll fluorescence. Under MS, EC increased water potential and relative water content, and reduced transpiration rate. The greater allocation of biomass to the roots, which serve as a strong sink for assimilated carbon under EC, helped in better root growth. and B. K. Rabha, D. C. Uprety.
Tomato seeds exposed to space conditions for nearly six years on board the Long Duration Exposure Facility (LDEF) satellite were subsequently germinated and the resultant seedlings grown on earth under controlled conditions for analysis. Photosynthesis, biomass, and water relations were compared between mature plants grown from earth-based control seeds and space-exposed seeds under both well-watered and drought-stressed conditions. No consistent significant differences in photosynthesis and water relations were observed in the two sets of plants at any level of drought stress. Fruit production, however, though limited and variable, was significantly greater in plants grown from space-exposed seeds than in plants grown from earth-based seeds. Overall, exposure of seeds to space had only minor effects on the physiology and growth of plants grown from such seed. and M. S. Marmor, C. E. Martin.
Responses of baldcypress (Taxodium distichum) seedlings to soil moisture were studied to test the hypothesis that flooding may lead to seedling's higher susceptibility to drought. Treatments included a well-watered but drained control (C), continuously flooded (CF), control followed by drought (CD), and flooded followed by drought (FD). Gas exchange values revealed no significant effects on net photosynthetic rate (PN) in response to flooding. In contrast, after the onset of drought, PN was significantly reduced in CD and FD plants. Significant growth reductions under mild drought conditions indicated that baldcypress seedlings were drought sensitive. However, comparison of gas exchange rates and growth responses between CD and FD plants indicated that prior flooding had no detectable effect on subsequent sensitivity of baldcypress to drought. These findings explain baldcypress persistence in wetland habitats characterized by periodic flooding and mild drought. and J. M. Elcan, S. R. Pezeshki.
Species composition and photosynthetic characteristics of dominant species of ungrazed plot (UG), overgrazed plot (OG), and restored grazed plot (RG) were determined in the Xilin River Basin, Inner Mongolia, China. Both heavily grazing and restoration significantly affected the composition of different species and life forms. Leymus chinensis, Stipa grandis, and Cleistogenes polyphylla, three dominant perennial grasses in UG plot, contributed 58.9 % aboveground biomass to that of whole community, and showed higher net photosynthetic rate (PN), transpiration rate (E), and intrinsic water-use efficiency (WUE). In OG plot, relative biomass of L. chinensis and S. grandis significantly decreased, while relative biomass of three shrubs/sub-shrubs, Caragana microphylla, Artemisia frigida, and Kochia prostrata, obviously increased. Heavy grazing significantly decreased PN, E, and WUE of L. chinensis and S. grandis, while shrubs/sub-shrubs showed significantly higher photosynthetic activity and WUE than the grasses. After 18-year restoration, photosynthetic activities of L. chinensis and S. grandis were significantly higher than those in the OG plot. The proportion of L. chinensis, S. grandis, and C. microphylla significantly increased, and relative biomass of C. polyphylla, A. frigida, and K. prostrata markedly declined in RG plot. We found close relationships between physiological properties of species and their competitive advantage in different land use types. Higher photosynthetic capability means more contribution to total biomass. The variations in physiological characteristics of plants could partly explain the changes in species composition during degrading and restoring processes of Inner Mongolia typical steppes. and S. P. Three-years-old trees of Satsuma mandarin (Citrus unshiu [Mak.] Marc.) cv. Okitsu were exposed to O3 fumigation during long term (one year) in open-top chambers. As a result of the treatment, chlorophyll a fluorescence and gas exchange parameters were modified with respect to trees growing in O3-free conditions. Net photosynthetic rate and stomatal conductance decreased and intercellular CO2 concentration increased according to a reduction of the non-cyclic electron flow and a lower capacity to reduce the quinone pool. O3 also reduced the development of non-photochemical quenching preventing the dissipation of excess excitation energy and, therefore, generated several alterations in photosynthetic apparatus. All these effects were obtained in long-term exposure and higher O3 concentration. In O3 ambient conditions, the effects were minor. and A. Calatayud ... [et al.].
Gas exchange, chlorophyll (Chl) fluorescence, and contents of photosynthetic pigments, soluble proteins (ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase, RuBPCO), and antioxidant enzymes were characterized in the fully expanded 6th leaves in rice seedlings grown on either complete (CK) or on nitrogen-deficient nutrient (N-deficiency) solutions during a 20-chase period. Compared with the control plants, the lower photosynthetic capacity at saturation irradiance (Pmax) was accompanied by an increase in intercellular CO2 concentration (Ci), indicating that in N-deficient plants the decline in Pmax was not due to stomatal limitation but due to the reduced carboxylation efficiency. The fluorescence parameters ΦPS2, Fv'/Fm', electron transport rate (ETR), and qP showed the same tendency as Pmax in N-deficient plants. Correspondingly, a higher qN paralleled the rise of the ratio of carotenoid (Car) to Chl contents. However, Fv/Fm was still diminished, suggesting that photoinhibition did occur in the photosystem 2 (PS2) reaction centres. In addition, the activities of antioxidant enzymes on a fresh mass basis were gradually lowered, leading to the aggravation of membrane lipid peroxidation with the proceeding N-deficiency. The accumulation of malonyldialdehyde resulted in the lessening of Chl and soluble protein content. Analyses of regression showed PS2 excitation pressure (1 - qP) was linearly correlated with the content of Chl and inversely with soluble protein (particularly RuBPCO) content. There was a lag phase in the increase of PS2 excitation pressure compared to the decrease of RuBPCO content. Therefore, the increased excitation pressure under N-deficiency is probably the result of saturation of the electron transport chain due to the limitation of the use of reductants by the Calvin cycle. Rice plants responded to N-deficiency and high irradiance by decreasing light-harvesting capacity and by increasing thermal dissipation of absorbed energy. and Z.-A. Huang ... [et al.].
The effects of nitrogen (N) supply restriction on the CO2 assimilation and photosystem 2 (PS2) function of flag leaves were compared between two contrastive Japanese rice cultivars, a low-yield cultivar released one century ago, cv. Shirobeniya (SRB), and a recently improved high-yield cultivar, cv. Akenohoshi (AKN). Both cultivars were solution-cultured at four N supply levels from N4 (control) to N1 (the lowest). With a reduction in N-supply, contents of N (LNC), ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (RuBPCO), and chlorophyll (Chl) in flag leaves decreased in both cultivars. In parallel with this, the net photosynthetic rate (PN), mesophyll conductance (g m), and stomatal conductance (gs) decreased. PN was more dominantly restricted by gm than gs. The values of PN, gm, and RuBPCO content were larger in AKN than SRB at the four N supply levels. The content of Chl greatly decreased with N deficiency, but the reduction in the maximum quantum yield of PS2 was relatively small. Quantum yield of PS2 (ΦPS2) decreased with N deficiency, and its significant cultivar difference was observed between the two cultivars at N1: a high value was found in AKN. The content ratio of Chl/RuBPCO was also significantly low in AKN. The low Chl/RuBPCO is one of the reasons why AKN maintained a comparatively high PN and ΦPS2 at N deficiency. The adequate ratio of N distribution between Chl and RuBPCO is the important prerequisite for the efficient and sustainable photosynthesis in a flag leaf of rice plant under low N-input. and E. Leaf water potential, leaf osmotic potential, chlorophyll a and b contents, stomatal conductance, net photosynthetic rate, and water use efficiency were determined in two pistachio species (Pistacia khinjuk L. and P. mutica L.) grown under osmotic drought stress induced by a combination of NaCl and polyethylene glycol 6000. A decrease in values for all mentioned variables was observed as the osmotic potential of the nutrient solution (Ψs) decreased. The osmotic adjustment (ΔΨπ) of the species increased by decreasing Ψs. Thus P. khinjuk had a higher osmotic drought stress tolerance than P. mutica. and A. Ranjbarfordoei ... [et al.].
Seedlings of spring barley, meadow fescue, and winter rape were fumigated with 180 μg kg-1 of ozone for 12 d, and effect of O3 on photosynthesis and cell membrane permeability of fumigated plants was determined. Electrolyte leakage and chlorophyll fluorescence were measured after 6, 9, and 12 d of fumigation, while net photosynthetic rate (PN) and stomatal conductance (gs) were measured 9 d after the start of ozone exposure. O3 treatment did not change membrane permeability in fescue and barley leaves, while in rape a significant decrease in ion leakage was noted within the whole experiment. O3 did not change the photochemical efficiency of photosystem 2 (PS2), i.e., Fv/Fm, and the initial fluorescence (F0). The values of half-rise time (t1/2) from F0 to maximal fluorescence (Fm) decreased in fescue and barley after 6 and 9 d of fumigation. PN decreased significantly in ozonated plants, in the three species. The greatest decrease in PN was observed in ozonated barley plants (17 % of the control). The ozone-induced decrease in PN was due to the closure of stomata. Rape was more resistant to ozone than fescue or barley. Apparently, the rape plants show a large adaptation to ozone and prevent loss of membrane integrity leading to ion leakage. and A. Plażek, M. Rapacz. A. Skoczowski.
