Román německy píšícího židovského spisovatele a žurnalisty evropského formátu, narozeného v jihomoravském Šafově, se zabývá podobně jako jeho celé dílo problematikou židovství., Román, napsaný již v průběhu dvacátých let minulého století, je považován za jeden z nejznámnějších Winderových příspěvků k otázce židovství. Za války se turecká armáda pod záminkou zajištění týlu dopouštěla nelidské genocidy na arménských obyvatelích svého území hromadnými deportacemi do mezopotamské pouště. Proti tomuto údělu se vzbouřila skupina arménských sedláků, kteří se pod vedením vzdělaného obchodníka opevní na náhorní planině a po čtyřicet dnů se brání proti zuřivému náporu Turků.
