The source-sink relationship is one of major determinants of plant performance. The influence of reproductive sink demand on light-saturated photosynthesis (Pmax), dark respiration (RD), stomatal conductance (gs), intrinsic water-use efficiency (WUEi), contents of soluble sugar (SSC), nitrogen, carbon, and photosynthetic pigments was examined in blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum L. cv. ‘Brigitta’) during the final stage of rapid fruit growth. Measurements were performed three times per day on developed, sun-exposed leaves of girdled shoots with 0.1, 1, and 10 fruit per leaf (0.1F:L, 1F:L, and 10F:L, respectively) and nongirdled shoots bearing one fruit per leaf (NG). Girdling and lower fruit amount induced lower Pmax, gs, N, and total chlorophyll (Chl) and higher WUEi, SSC, RD, Chl a/b ratio and carotenoids-to-chlorophylls ratio (Car/Chl) for the 1F:L and 0.1F:L treatments. The impact of girdling was counterbalanced by 10F:L, with NG and 10F:L having similar values. Variables other than Pmax, RD, gs, WUEi, and SSC were unaffected throughout the course of the day. Pmax and gs decreased during the course of the day, but gs decreased more than Pmax in the afternoon, while WUEi was increasing in almost all treatments. SSC increased from the morning until afternoon, whereas RD peaked at noon regardless of the treatment. Generally, Pmax was closely and negatively correlated to SSC, indicating that sugar-sensing mechanisms played an important role in regulation of blueberry leaf photosynthesis. With respect to treatments, Pmax and N content were positively related, while RD was not associated to substrate availability. The enhanced Car/Chl ratio showed a higher photoprotection under the lower sink demand. In the field, supplemental application of N fertilizer to rice (Oryza sativa) shortly before the beginning of heading stage increases leaf N content and enhances photosynthesis during the grain-filling period. In search of varietal differences in leaf gas exchange in response to supplemental N application, we examined 13 rice varieties grown in the field during two successive years. The varieties included japonica and indica varieties, both of which are widely grown in Japan. The response to supplemental N application could not be separated clearly between variety groups; some of the japonica varieties, but none of the indica varieties, exhibited significant increase in stomatal conductance (gs) after supplemental N application. Supplemental N was more effective to increase stomatal aperture in the varieties with inherently lower gs. Varieties that showed greater response of g s to supplemental N application might be able to adjust their stomatal aperture with appropriate N control. Although the internal-to-ambient CO2 mole fraction ratio and the leaf carbon isotopic composition (δ13C) differed among varieties as a result of variations in stomatal aperture and the CO2 requirement of mesophyll, supplemental N application barely influenced these parameters, because it only moderately affected stomatal aperture. Since δ13C tended to increase with increasing number of days from transplantation to heading stage in japonica varieties, δ13C values were more sensitive to differences in growth rate between years than to N application., S. Soybean [Glycine max (L.) cv. Jack] grown in open top chambers under controlled laboratory and field conditions was ušed to study the acclimation of leaf gas exchange processes to CO2 enrichment. Air inside the open top chambers was maintained at either 700-800 or 350-400 pmol(C02) mol'^(air). Leaf gas exchange rates were measured for some plants switched between treatments. When measmed in the C02-emiched atmosphere, stomatal conductances (gg) were higher in leaves grown in C02-enriched atmospheres than in those grown under ambient conditions, and the lower gg values for plants in the C02-enriched atmospheres were limiting to leaf net photosynthetic CO2 exchange rates (Pn). of enriched leaves was higher than those of the ambient Controls when measured at elevated CO2 levels in both controlled environment and field studies, while it was depressed in enriched leaves when measured imder ambient CO2 conditions, and this drop in Pn did not recover until 6-15 d after plants were placed back in ambient conditions.
The most representative evergreen shrub species growing in the low mediterranean maquis modified their leaf characteristics during the year, but the response to climate varied among the species. The reál sclerophyllous species, Quercus ilex L., Phillyrea latifolia and Pistacia lentiscus, showed a convergence in higher leaf thickness and lower net photosynthetic rate (P^) compared with Arhuíus unedo L. and Cistus incanus L. Under summer stress they maintained a substantial positive carbon balance. Pistacia was one of the most tolerant species to the drought, it maintained a substantial positive balance over a wide range in temperature. Arhutus and Cistus had relatively thin leaves with a higher succulence index and higher ihe more characteristic sclerophyllous species. The superiority of Cistus in carbon uptake over all the spacies was maintained throughout most of the year by its morphological leaf properties: low leaf thickness, high chlorophyll contents. Besides, Cistus shed most of its leaves before summer, thus reducing its evaporative surface.
