- Description:
- Heritage preservation is one of the fields where the results of the ethnological studies may be applied. The professional goals of Czech ethnographers include above all the documentation, but at the same time the care of monuments. It implies systematic field work: research, written as well as photographic documentation, registration, comparative studies. Classification of the detected artifacts of vernacular architecture is only one aspect of the professional ethnographic work in the institutes of heritage preservation. Close cooperation of researchers in those institutes with universities and museums, especially with the regional ones, may be considered as relatively successful. The videos, DVDs and CDs dealing with vernacular architecture technology and with the traditional procedures in the building trade are an extraordinary evidence of this symbiosis. From the point of view of the monument preservation, those films are drawn up as documentary films, however, the individual building operations are demonstrated herein. Screenplays of those films were elaborated with regard to the participation of the museum experts. the synergy of the ethnologists engaged in the monument preservation and the municipal government and state administration with their aim to enhance local or regional tradition cannot be overlooked. Participation inpreservation of a number of objects of vernacular architecture in particular villages enables the contemporary generation to learn about local building traditions, handcraft production, etc. Environment created like this is an ideal starting point for common cultural activities, stimulation of interest in the native place and region, previous generations and their way of life.

- Description:

- Description:
- The Ethnographic Society has been working for more that one hundred years - since 1893. Its original name - Czechoslavonic Ethnographic Society - reflected the tendency of the period towards the Slavonic nations. The society played an important role in the successful presentation of ethnographic materials in the great Czechoslavonic Ethnographic Exhibition in 1895. These materials were aftewards stored in the Ethnographic Museum, opened in 1896 in Prague under the administration of L. Niederle. Since 1922 the collections have been in charge of the National Museum. - The Czechoslavonic Ethnographic Society has been publishing the (Czechoslavonic) Ethnographic Bulletin since 1897 and has been operating its own library. - Till the early 1960 the Czechoslavonic Ethnographic Society was the only voluntary organization in the field of ethnography and folklore studies. In 1956 its name was changed to Czechoslovak Ethnographic Society., Moreover, the other society, which associated especially professional ethnographers, was founded in 1958 under the name Society of Czechoslovak Ethnographers of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences. In 1962 both societies merged into the Czechoslovac Ethnographic Society of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences. The subjectivity of the Society and its financial resources were reduced, but both its members and correspondents continued in their work and the Buleltin was published regularly. - Since 1993 (after the split of Czechoslovakia) the Society is called Ethnographic Society. New statutes of the organization were accepted in 1999. The supreme executive body of the Society is formed by the general assembly, the central committee has nine members. The society publishes the Ethnographic Bulletin and Newsletter of the Ethnographic Socety. It also organizes scientific conferences and it evaluates the most outstanding events in the field. It financially supports research activities (even of students). The society has 242 members and 185 correspondents., and Anglický abstrakt s šifrrou (št) uveden na str. 192-13.

- Subject:
- Moravia, 19th century, and magazine publishing
- Language:
- Czech
- Description:
- The study analyses the ethnographical articles in selected periodicals published in the second half of the 19th century in Moravia: the Koleda calendar (1851-1858), the Koleda magazine (1876-1881) and the Komenský magazine (1873-1902). This study comments on the contribution of these publications to the documentation of folk culture in Moravia and formation of ethnology as a scientific discipline. It highlights the share of the editors and contributors in the formation of the calendar and both magazines and points out some motives which led to the publication of the ethnographical texts. It recalls some fundamental articles. The analysed periodicals primarily focused on folklore in the Czech lands as well as other Slavic countries, family and annual customs and superstitions. In all three cases, ethnography was a supplementary, not a primary theme. The occurrence of ethnographical texts depended on current situation.

- open-air museum, cultural heritage, Czechoslavic ethnographic exhibition, folk house, and Czech and Slovak ethnology
- Language:

- Description:
- In the text, the authors demonstrate that a Czech open-air museum was founded in Prague in 1895, well ahead other European countries. It was the first open-air museum in the then Europe south of Scandinavia. It was far ahead of its time also through the connection with a large collection museum. The original exhibition village changed into a permanent open-air museum. The Czech "skansen", likewise the Swedish one, meant an inspiration for further exhibition and museum projects. From the very beginning of the existence of an ethnographic village at the Czechoslavic Ethnographic Exhibition, it was planned to maintain it. For subsequent six years, the village was used for ethnographic and cultural purposes, just as current open-air museums are. Its spaces were not closed and non-functional. For this reason, we could consider the ethnographic village to be “wooden heritage”, which does no longer exist now. Despite its uniqueness, and scholar, social and cultural benefits, the ethnographic village from the year 1895 has not survived. Its extinction in the year 1901 was caused by a wood-decay fungus. The authors believe there is still a possibility of renewing this ethnographic village

- Description:
- As for the Slovakian history, the second half of the 19th century saw efforts for acknowledgement of the Slovakian folk that lived in Upper Hungary. The always stronger policy of magyarization was not favourable to the expressions from the Slovakian ethnic group which could disrupt the political line of the Hungarian nation. As a result of this, cultural and social activities were limited, which brought about a weak support to the scientific work focused on Slovakian ethnography. Ethnographic papers from that period focused on the documentation of Slovakian embroideries and lace and the research into folk literature. Vernacular architecture was outside this research. The reversal came only in connection with the Czechoslavic Ethnographic Exhibition in Prague in 1895 where traditional architecture of Slovakia was presented through models and three buildings in the exhibition village. The great response among the wide and professional public (especially the presentation of a farmstead from Čičmany) drew attention to Slovakia as an unresearched ethnographic territory. The Czechoslavic Ethnographic Exhibition was the first important impulse for the documentation of and research into vernacular architecture in Slovakia, which started developing fully in the 1930s.
