We studied water relations and gas exchange in six almond genotypes grafted on GF677 in response to withholding irrigation for 14 days and a subsequent 10-day rehydration period. The responses to drought stress significantly differed in the almond genotypes; the tolerant plants were distinguished and monitored. Leaf relative water content (RWC) decreased by more than 23%, leaf water potential dropped to less than -4.3 MPa, and electrolyte leakage increased to 43% in dehydration-sensitive genotypes. Photosynthesis (PN) and stomatal conductance (gs) of drought-sensitive genotypes were significantly reduced by 70% and 97% in response to water deficiency. Water stress significantly enhanced wateruse efficiency up to 10 folds in drought-tolerant almonds. The difference between leaf temperature and its surrounding air temperature (ΔT) increased significantly to more than 187% under water stress in drought-tolerant genotypes. In addition, the reduction in the g s and further ability to preserve RWC were involved probably in drought-tolerance mechanism in almond. Negative significant correlations were found between ΔT, PN, and gs. Based on the correlations, we suggested that ΔT could be used as a simple measurement for monitoring water stress development in the irrigation management of almond orchards. In conclusion, ‘Supernova’ and the Iranian genotypes ‘6-8’ and ‘B-124’, were found to be more droughttolerant compared with other genotypes in this experiment., S. Karimi, A. Yadollahi, K. Arzani, A. The genetic basis of stomatal conductance (gs), net photosynthetic rate (PN), and transpiration rate (E) was explored by using a wheat doubled haploid population from a cross of Hanxuan10 and Lumai 14. The above three traits were evaluated in wheat flag leaves at 10, 20, 30 days after anthesis under drought stress (DS) and well-watered (WW), and quantitative trait loci (QTL) were analyzed. Expression of the traits during the grain filling stage showed downward trends under both conditions, but expression of three phenotypes were stronger under WW than those under DS. Extremely significant positive correlations were established among the traits at all growth stages under both conditions. A total of 18 additive QTLs for those traits were identified on 10 chromosomes. Among them, two batches of nine additive QTLs were associated with the target traits under DS and WW, respectively. Two additive QTLs for gs and E, two for gs and PN, six for gs, PN, and E clustered at the same or near the region (colocation) of chromosomes 4A, 2B, and 7B, respectively. This provided genetic basis for close phenotype correlations among gs, PN, and E. Furthermore, QTLs for gs, PN, and E near Xgwm577 and Xgwm611 located on 7B chromosome were linked to previously reported QTLs regulating a SPAD value and the chlorophyll a/b ratio under dark-induced condition. This finding indicated that these QTLs on 7B chromosome might be involved in the process of wheat leaf senescence., S. G. Wang, S. S. Jia, D. Z. Sun, H. Y. Wang, F. F. Dong, H. X. Ma, R. L. Jing, G. Under natural and greenhouse conditions we found a significant reduction in the physiological and biochemical constituents in leaves of five disease types when compared to healthy ones. The growth characteristics such as height, dry mass, photosynthetic and transpiration rates, stomatal conductance, and water use efficiency were reduced significantly more in susceptible cv. TRI-2024 than in tolerant cv. TRI-2025. Also contents of total sugars, nitrogen, amino acids, proteins, polyphenols, and catechin were reduced in diseased plant leaves. However, the reduction was more prominent in susceptible than tolerant cultivar. Canker size and barker moisture content were larger in the susceptible cultivar than in the tolerant cultivar. and P. The combined effects of water stress (WS) and low irradiance (LI) on growth, photosynthesis, osmotic adjustment, and lipid peroxidation were studied in dragon spruce (Picea asperata Mast.) seedlings grown under two water treatments (well watered, 100 % of field capacity, and water stressed, 30 % of field capacity) and two irradiances (HI, 100 % of full sunlight and LI, 15 % of full sunlight). WS reduced growth, chlorophyll (Chl) a and b contents, net photosynthetic rate, transpiration rate, stomatal conductance, and effective quantum yield of photosystem 2 (Y) but increased free proline and malondialdehyde contents. LI increased Chl contents and decreased Y, photochemical quenching (qP), and non-photochemical quenching (qN) under both water treatments. Hence the seedlings in the understory were more sensitive to drought than to LI. and Y. Yang ... [et al.].
We evaluated the growth and development of the medicinal species Pothomorphe umbellata (L.) Miq. under different shade levels (full sun and 30, 50, and 70 % shade, marked as I100, I70, I50, and I30, respectively) and their effects on gas exchange and activities of antioxidant enzymes. Photosynthetically active radiation varied from 1 254 µmol m-2 s-1 at I100 to 285 µmol m-2 s-1 at I30. Stomatal conductance, net photosynthetic rate, and relative chlorophyll (Chl) content were maximal in I70 plants. Plants grown under I100 produced leaves with lower Chl content and signs of chlorosis and necrosis. These symptoms indicated Chl degradation induced by the generation of reactive oxygen species. Stress related antioxidant enzyme activities (Mn-SOD, Fe-SOD, and Cu/Zn-SOD) were highest in I100 plants, whereas catalase activity was the lowest. Hence P. umbellata is a shade species (sciophyte), a feature that should be considered in reforestation programs or in field plantings for production of medicinal constituents. and J. A. Marchese ... Drought significantly constrains higher yield of alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) in arid and semiarid areas all over the world. This study evaluated the responses of leaf cuticular wax constituents to drought treatment and their relations to gas-exchange indexes across six alfalfa cultivars widely grown in China. Water deficit was imposed by withholding water for 12 d during branching stage. Cuticular waxes on alfalfa leaves were dominated by primary alcohols (41.7-54.2%), alkanes (13.2-26.9%) and terpenes (17.5-28.9%), with small amount of aldehydes (1.4-3.4%) and unknown constituents (4.5-18.4%). Compared to total wax contents, the wax constituents were more sensitive to drought treatment. Drought decreased the contents of primary alcohol and increased alkanes in all cultivars. Alkane homologs, C25, C27, and C29, were all negatively correlated with photosynthetic rate, transpiration rate, stomatal conductance, and leaf water potential. Under drought conditions, both stomatal and nonstomatal factors were involved in controlling water loss from alfalfa leaves. No direct relationship was observed between wax contents and drought resistance among alfalfa cultivars. An increase in alkane content might be more important in improving drought tolerance of alfalfa under water deficit, which might be used as an index for selecting and breeding drought resistant cultivars of alfalfa., Y. Species of the Theobroma genus are primarily known by their commercially valuable seeds, especially, T. cacao is one of the most important tropical perennial crops. Beside T. grandiflorum, T. bicolor, and T. angustifolium, T. cacao is the only species of the genus that has been better studied to obtain physiologically relevant information. The main objective of this work was to evaluate the leaf gas exchange in seedlings of seven species of the Theobroma genus, seeking to identify characteristics that could be used in T. cacao breeding programmes. The study was realized under greenhouse conditions using six-month-old seedlings, in which net photosynthetic rate (PN), stomatal conductance (gs), transpiration (E), as well as parameters derived from light curves (PN vs. photosynthetically active radiation) were evaluated. T. cacao, along with T. microcarpum, showed the lowest values of PN, gs, and E, while the highest values were presented by T. speciosum, which showed higher saturation irradiance and lower intrinsic and instantaneous water-use efficiencies, being considered the species less conservative in water use. Therefore, the parameters shown by the different evaluated species could serve to design T. cacao genotypes, through introgression of genes for specific environments such as the cabruca system widespread in southern Bahia, Brazil., A.-A. Gas exchange, water relations, and leaf traits were studied in the tuberous-root producing legumes ahipa (Pachyrhizus ahipa) and yambean (P. erosus) under different environmental conditions. Differences in leaf traits (hairiness, leaf area, areal leaf mass, stomatal density) and paraheliotropism were found between ahipa and yambean. Under sufficient water supply, the increase in air temperature and decrease in air humidity increased stomatal conductance (gs) and net photosynthetic rate (PN) in yambean but reduced them in ahipa. In a drying soil (14 d after irrigation), inter-specific variation in gas exchange was only observed in the early morning, and yambean showed a greater sensitivity to water restriction than ahipa. High gs at low humidity increased PN of P. erosus but resulted in lower water-use efficiency (WUE). However, long-term WUE, estimated by leaf carbon isotope discrimination, showed little variation between species. Daily-irrigated ahipa and yambean grown in the greenhouse did not show significant differences in gas exchange. However, leaf temperature was significantly greater in yambean than in ahipa while a steepper relationship between E and PN and gs was observed in ahipa.
The contribution of photosynthesis to yield improvement is important to know in order to determine future breeding strategies. The objectives of this study were to determine the contribution of photosynthesis and water-use efficiency (WUE) to grain yield improvement of facultative wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) cultivars on the Loess Plateau of China released between 1937 and 2004. The grain yield has increased nearly sevenfold during this period. Surprisingly, these increases were not correlated with the rate of photosynthesis per unit of leaf area when the cultivars were planted and managed in the same environment. The increases were also not correlated with transpiration rate, stomatal conductance, or WUE, except at the jointing stage. The total increase in photosynthesis may be due to enlargement of photosynthetic area and photosynthesis duration. The grain yield was positively correlated with the number of grains per unit of area (r = 0.855, P<0.05), harvest index (HI) (r = 0.885, P<0.01), and thousand-grain mass (r = 0.879, P<0.01). The increase in grain yield was limited by the grain number and the grain size (sink-limited) and the yield improvement was attributed to a rise in HI over the last 70 years in a highland agricultural system in China., X. Mesophyll conductance (gm) is essential to determine accurate physiological parameters used to model photosynthesis in forest ecosystems. This study aimed to determine the effects of time of day on photosynthetic parameters, and to assess the effect of using either intercellular CO2 concentration (Ci) or chloroplast CO2 concentration (Cc), on maximum carboxylation velocity of ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (Rubisco), Vcmax. We used Amazonian saplings of Myrcia paivae and Minquartia guianensis. Photosynthetic parameters were measured using an infrared gas analyzer (IRGA); gm was determined using both gas exchange and chlorophyll (Chl) a fluorescence and gas-exchange data alone. Leaf thickness (LT) and specific leaf area (SLA) were also measured. Air temperature, relative humidity or understory light did not correlate with gm and on average daily IRGA-fluorometer-determined gm was 0.04 mol(CO2) m-2 s-1 for M. paivae and 0.05 mol(CO2) m-2 s-1 for M. guianensis. Stomatal conductance (gs), gm, electron transport rate (JF), and light-saturated net photosynthetic rate (PNmax) were lower in the afternoon than in the morning. However, no effect of time of day was observed on Vcmax. LT and SLA did not affect any of the examined parameters.
IRGA-determined g m was almost the double of the value obtained using the IRGA-fluorescence method. Vcmax values determined using Cc were about 25% higher than those obtained using Ci, which highlighted the importance of using Cc in Vcmax calculation. Decline in PNmax at the end of the afternoon reflected variations in gs and gm rather than changes in Vcmax. Diurnal variation in gm appeared to be associated more with endogenous than with atmospheric factors. and H. C. S. Nascimento, R. A. Marenco.
