Since 2011, a unique project studying the effect of artificial canopy opening (Small-size clearings) on biodiversity in lowland forests has been carried out in the Podyjí NP. The response of communities of butterflies, moths, epigeic, floricolous and saproxylic beetles, birds, reptiles, and vascular plants was observed for three years. The results showed a positive effect of early stages in forest succession not only for the majority of groups studied, but also for many threatened species, and also demonstrated the importance of open forest remnants for biodiversity. In protected forests at low and middle elevations, conservation management should attempt to maintain a mosaic of forest at different stages of succession. and Pavel Šebek a kolektiv autorů.
Ideálním řešením zajišťujícím co nejkompletnější záznam společenstev střevlíků se zdá být kombinace obou metod sběru dat., The selection of a proper sampling technique for ecological research into insect assemblages is a tough nut to crack. Based on extensive field study, I have shown that the commonly employed "pitfall trapping" technique recorded just half the number of carabid species compared to the individual collection technique. There were also differences in species trait representation in samples originating from each particular technique. Pitfall traps efficiently recorded large species but missed smaller ones, which were frequently recorded by individual collection. The main shortcoming of the individual collection technique is the dependence of its efficiency on the field experiences of each particular researcher. A combination of both investigated sampling techniques seems to be the best way to gain as complete records of carabid assemblages as possible., and Michal Knapp.
Typicky šlo o dubové a dubohabrové lesy, jejichž biodiverzita dlouhodbě klesá. Návštěva a studium lesů centrálních Apenin poskytuje hodnotné souvislosti pro řešení problému klesající druhové diverzity v někdejších pařezinách střední Evropy., The landscape of the central Apennines is markedly diverse. Dynamically formed relief is covered by a mosaic of different vegetation types. For centuries, local forests are managed as coppices - type of management common in former Czechoslovakia up to last century. Biodiversity of these oak and oak-hornbeam forests gradually declines due to the abandonment of coppicing. Thus, a visit to the central Apennines and study of their forests provide a valuable insight into the problem of species diversity decline in the former coppices of Central Europe., and František Máliš, Roberto Canullo, Radim Hédl.
Ostrov Madagaskar patří z pohledu taxonomů i ochranářů mezi nejzajímavější místa světa. A zvláště mezi palmami, v čeledi Arecaceae patří mezi významná vývojová centra - nesmírně bohatá a zároveň velmi zranitelná. Z Madagaskaru je dosud popsáno 203 druhů palem v 17 rodech, což je téměř trojnásobek oproti celé Africe. Přitom pouhých 7 druhů má větší areály, zbývající druhy jsou madagaskarskými endemity. První díl dvoudílného seriálu představuje klimatické, geografické a vegetační poměry ostrova. Zvláštní kapitolu zasluhuje i historie tamního palmového výzkumu., In the eyes of taxonomists and nature conservationists, Madagascar is one of the most interesting areas in the world, particularly with regard to palms (Arecaceae), as these form an important evolutionary centre - very rich and yet at the same time fragile. 203 palm species in 17 genera has been described so far, which is three times more than in Africa. And only 7 species have wider distribution outside Madagascar, the rest being endemics of the island. The first part of this two-volume article describes the climatic, geographic and vegetation characteristics of the island. The history of palm research in Madagascar is also mentioned., and Vlastik Rybka, Romana Rybková.
Lesní mokřady byly odvodňovány kvůli hospodářským výnosům a teprve v současné době se lesní mokřady postupně snažíme obnovovat., Soil moisture has a strong influence on the biodiversity of forest vegetation. Extreme situations such as flooding or drought can significantly change biodiversity. In addition to these natural factors, the human impact has led to long-term desiccation on the landscape scale. Forest wetlands were drained to promote management production. Only recently can efforts to restore forest wetlands be observed., and Radim Hédl.
Mravenci jsou jednou z nejpočetnějších skupin bezobratlých živočichů žíjících v korunách tropických stromů. Tým vědců z Českých Budějovic objasnil otázky ohledně biodiverzity a ekologických nároků stromových společenstev mravenců za pomoci nejrůznějších metod od vykácení a rozebrání celých kusů pralesa, sestrojení experimentálních pastí až po počítačové simulace. Výzkum pomohl získat klíčové poznatky nejen o tropických lesích pro vědu, ale přispět i k jejich ochraně a vzdělání domorodých obyvatel, kteří v nich žijí., Ants are one of the most abundant groups of invertebrates living in the canopies of tropical trees. In their research a team of scientists from České Budějovice clarified the drivers of high diversity and the ecological preferences of ant arboreal communities using a variety of techniques from felling and dissecting trees in entire forest plots and the construction of special experimental traps to computer simulations. This research helped to advance not only our knowledge about tropical rainforests, but it was also significant for tropical forest conservation and the education of the native people depending on them., and Petr Klimeš, Ondřej Mottl.
„Velké druhy“ racků je označení zahrnující racky z druhového komplexu racka bělohlavého (Larus cachinnans), racka středomořského (L. michahelis) a racka stříbřitého (L. argentatus). Jejich populace v Evropě a Severní Americe za posledních ca 50 let značně narostly. Šíření tak oportunistických druhů vyvolalo obavy z jejich možného negativního vlivu na biodiverzitu, početnost a hnízdní úspěšnost jiných druhů vodního ptactva. Naskýtá se otázka, zda je vhodné začít velké druhy racků na našem území potlačovat, a pokud ano, jaká opatření by bylo vhodné zavést., The populations of „large gulls“ from the species complex Larus cachinnans, L. michahelis and L. argentatus have undergone a widespread demographic increase in the last 50 years, particularly in Europe and North America. The spread of such opportunistic species can negatively influence biodiversity and the breeding success of other bird species breeding at the same site. The question of population control and different methods used is nowadays also a frequently discussed topic in the Czech and Slovak Republics., and Hana Latková.
