Anthocyanins and nonphotochemical quenching (NPQ) are two important tools that provide photoprotection in plant leaves. In order to understand how plants use these tools for acclimation to changing seasonal conditions, we investigated pigments, antioxidative capacity, and photosynthesis in leaves of an evergreen tree (Acmena acuminatissima) in two contrasting seasons. Young leaves of A. acuminatissima appeared in distinct colors, being light green in summer and red in winter due to the presence of anthocyanins. In the winter young leaves, anthocyanins contributed less than 2% to the antioxidant pool. In the summer, young leaves had higher NPQ than that of mature leaves, but in the winter, they did not derive any NPQ-related advantage over mature leaves. These results suggest that the accumulation of anthocyanins in young leaves in the winter may compensate for the insufficient photoprotection afforded by NPQ and that anthocyanins function as a light attenuator to protect the photochemical apparatus against excess light., H. The article traces the role and image of the wood and the tree in the culture of Ancient China as emerging from the transmitted literature of the Warring States period. Although this topic has already been touched upon in some previous studies, such as Mark Elvin's The Retreat of the Elephants, no comprehensive description based on at least nearly exhaustive systematization of respective data available to us in primary sources has been presented yet, especially for trees. In this paper, virtually all recorded modes of approaching the phenomena by the learned men of the Warring States are summarized and supplied with extensive reference to ancient texts. Apart from other issues, it clearly demonstrates that the skeptical stance to ancient Chinese love for nature and to the ecological ethos of traditional Chinese culture is highly justified., Lukáš Zádrapa., and Obsahuje bibliografii
Sazná nemoc kůry je méně známé onemocnění způsobené houbou Cryptostroma corticale (Ascomycota), s ostrůvkovitým výskytem v Evropě. Postihuje zejména javory kleny (Acer pseudoplatanus) a jejich hromadná vymírání byla zaznamenána u stromů oslabených stresem, především po nadprůměrně suchých a horkých letních měsících. Nedávný výskyt onemocnění v České republice podnítil studium druhu C. corticale a jeho rozšíření v Praze. Výsledek naší čtyřleté studie prokázal, že napadena je minimálně čtvrtina klenů v pražských parcích., Sooty bark disease is a less known disease caused by fungal species Cryptostroma corticale (Ascomycota), with patchy incidence in Europe. It mainly affects Sycamore (Acer pseudoplatanus), and its mass dieback was observed in trees weakened by stress, especially after the exceptionally dry and hot summer months. Recent record of the disease in the Czech Republic prompted the research of C. corticale and its occurrence in Prague. The results of our four-year study showed that at least 25 % of Sycamore trees in Prague parks are infected., and Ivana Kelnarová, Ondřej Koukol, Karel Černý.
