There are two genera of Eublepharid geckos described in Africa – Hemitheconyx and Holodactylus. The morphological differences of both species of genus Holodactylus – H. africanus and H. cornii, living in the Horn of Africa, are described. Although the basic information on ethology is also discussed, it is obvious that there are still many secrets concerning these interesting lizards. and Pavel Konečný, Tomáš Mazuch.
Malajsie jako tropická země patří mezi 12 biologicky nejbohatších a druhově nejrůznorodějších států světa. Její přírodní bohatství tak představuje jedno z vhodných míst k prvnímu seznámení se s faunou a flórou tropických lesů. Jedním z největších přírodních lákadel kontinentální Malajsie je světově nejstarší tropický nížinný les národního parku Taman Negara, jehož druhová diverzita obojživelníků a plazů je předmětem tohoto článku., Malaysia is one of the twelve biologically richest and the most species diverse states in the world. One of the biggest natural attractions of continental Malaysia is the world’s oldest lowland tropical forest in the Taman Negara National Park. The species diversity of amphibians and reptiles of the Taman Negara are presented., and Daniel Jablonski.
The Alpine Longicorn (Rosalia alpina) is an endangered and strictly protected icon of saproxylic biodiversity. Here we present an overview of its distribution in the Czech Republic, its host plants, and habitat requirements. We also comment upon the forestry and conservation management of its last inhabited sites. and Lukáš Drag a kol.
The reproduction of the Splash Tetra (Copella arnoldi), which inhabits the Amazon freshwater river basin, has its peculiarities. These fish deposit their eggs on the bottom of leaf blades above the water surface, where atmospheric moisture is high. After spawning is over the males remain beneath the leaf and spray the fertilized eggs with water so that they do not dry out. But that is the end of their care for their offspring. The hatching fry falls from the leaf back into the water and begin their independent life. These fish usually start mass spawning during the rainy season. Fish breeders are well aware of this fact and often deliberately arrange similar conditions for their fish when breeding them in captivity. and Jaroslav Eliáš.
Tropické lesy ostrova Borneo v jihovýchodní Asii jsou celosvětově výjimečné vysokou biodiverzitou různých skupin organismů. Jejich podoba byla formována mimo jiné během čtvrtohorního kolísání hladiny světových oceánů, kdy byly ostrovy sundské oblasti vzájemně propojeny či odděleny, což mělo vliv na migraci organismů. Současná diverzita lesů Bornea sleduje gradient nadmořské výšky a vlastnosti substrátů, přičemž můžeme rozlišit několik hlavních typů lesa. V posledních desetiletích jsme svědky masivní těžby lesů, které jsou mnohde převáděny na plantáže palmy olejné., Tropical forests of the island of Borneo in South East Asia harbour an extraordinary high biodiversity of various groups of organisms. They have been shaped, among other influences, by the Quaternary fluctuations of the level of world’s oceans, connecting or dividing islands within the Sundaland, which has affected migration of species. The present diversity of forests in Borneo follows an elevational gradient and substrate properties, thus forming several main forest types. Over the past few decades, we have witnessed massive logging and transformation of forests into oil palm (Elaeis guineensis) plantations., Radim Hédl., and Obsahuje seznam literatury
Nowadays, increasing attention is being paid to the biological significance of UV- -reflecting patterns exposed on the outer surfaces of various organisms. UV radiation plays an important role in the communication of many species of organisms. Here we give a brief overview of the biological functions of UV reflectance in some groups of invertebrates. Special attention is paid to the role of UV reflectance in sexual selection, foraging strategies, and the evolution and ecology of a species in general. and Pavel Pecháček, David Stella, Karel Kleisner.
Various types of artificial ant nests (formicaries) are described. These include simple laboratory types to more complex formicaries whose esthetic design is suitable for flat interiors. Formicaries facilitate not only the observation of natural ant behaviour inside a nest, but also of the remarkable practices used by young queens to appropriate the nest of a host ant species. In such equipment it is even possible to arrange a predatory raid by slave-making ants and observe their behaviour inside the attacked nest. Such observations would not have been possible in natural conditions. and Pavel Amcha.
