Variables of gas exchange of flag leaves and grain yield potentials of five representative winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) cultivars varied greatly across different development stages under the same management and irrigation. The cultivars with high yield potential had higher net photosynthetic rate (PN), PPFD (photosynthetic photon flux density) saturated photosynthetic rate (Psat), stomatal conductance (gs), and maximum apparent quantum yield of CO2 fixation (Φm,app) than those with low grain yield, but their dark respiration rate (RD) and compensation irradiance (Ic) were remarkably lower. Compared with overall increase of yield potential of 71 % from low yield cultivars to high yield ones, PN, Psat, Φm,app, and gs were 13, 19, 57, and 32 % higher, respectively; but RD and Ic decreased by 19 and 76 %, respectively. Such difference was evidently large during anthesis stage (e.g., PN by 33 %), which indicated that this period could be the best for assisting further selection for better cultivars. However, transpiration rate (E) and water use efficiency (WUE) differed only little. At different development stages, especially at anthesis, PN and Psat were positively correlated with Φm,app, gs, and yield potential, and negatively correlated with RD and Ic. Influence of drought (D) on changes of leaf water potential (Ψ) and parameters of gas exchange in D-resistant and D-sensitive genotypes of triticale and maize was compared. Soil D (from -0.01 to -2.45 MPa) was simulated by mannitol solutions. At -0.013 MPa significant differences in Ψ, net photosynthetic rate (PN), transpiration rate (E), stomatal conductance (gs), and internal CO2 concentration (Ci) of D-resistant and D-sensitive triticale and maize genotypes were not found. Together with the increase in concentration of the mannitol solution the impact of D on E and gs for D-sensitive genotypes (CHD-12, Ankora) became lower than for the D-resistant ones (CHD-247, Tina). Inversely, impact of D on Ψ was higher in D-sensitive than D-resistant genotypes. From 1 to 3 d of D, a higher decrease in PN was observed in D-resistant genotypes than in the D-sensitive ones. Under prolonged D (5-14 d) and simultaneous more severe D the decrease in PN was lower in D-resistant than in D-sensitive genotypes. Changes in Ψ, PN, E, and gs caused by D in genotypes differing in the drought susceptibility were similar for triticale and maize. Compared to control plants, increase of Ci was different for triticale and maize genotypes. Hence one of the physiological reasons of different susceptibility to D between sensitive and resistant genotypes is more efficient protection of tissue water status in resistant genotypes reflected in higher decrease in gs and limiting E compared to the sensitive ones. Calycanthus chinensis is an endangered plant of the national second-grade protection of China restricted in a small area in Zhejiang Province. We studied parameters of photosynthesis, chlorophyll (Chl) contents, and Chl fluorescence (minimum fluorescence, F0, maximum fluorescence, Fm, variable fluorescence, Fv, and Fv/Fm) of C. chinensis and Chimonanthus praecox. C. chinensis had lower compensation irradiance but higher saturation irradiance than C. praecox. Hence C. chinensis has more advantage in obtaining and utilizing photon energy and higher Chl content, and is more adaptive to higher temperature and propitious to thermal dissipation than C. praecox. In addition, C. chinensis produces abundant, well-preserved seed with a higher germination rate and a wider adaptability to temperature than C. praecox. Inter-comparisons in the gas exchange patterns and root characteristics under both well-watered and drought conditions were done in three-years-old seedlings of three oak species (Quercus cerris L., Q. frainetto Ten., and Q. ilex L.) growing in controlled environment. Well-watered Q. cerris had greater physiological performances than other oaks, but under drought it was not able to face the water stress showing also structural modifications such as reduction of root length and average diameter. On the other hand, Q. ilex maintained root growth both in drought or well-watered soils. Moreover, it was able to keep open stomata also under water stress, although stomatal conductance (gs) was low. Q. frainetto had an intermediate position in regard to its physiological and root structural characteristics between Q. cerris and Q. ilex under drought stress. For all oaks the relationship between gs and the ratio of sub-stomatal and ambient CO2 concentration (Ci/Ca) highlighted the dynamic adaptation of gs to the increase of hydraulic resistances of leaf, stem, and roots portions, more evident during the air humidity change and progressive soil dehydration. We investigated the strategies of four co-occurring evergreen woody species Quercus ilex, Quercus coccifera, Pinus halepensis, and Juniperus phoenicea to cope with Mediterranean field conditions. For that purpose, stem water potential, gas exchange, chlorophyll (Chl) fluorescence, and Chl and carotenoid (Car) contents were examined. We recognized two stress periods along the year, winter with low precipitation and low temperatures that led to chronic photoinhibition, and summer, when drought coincided with high radiation, leading to an increase of dynamic photoinhibition and a decrease of pigment content. Summer photoprotection was related to non-photochemical energy dissipation, electron flow to alternative sinks other than photosynthesis, decrease of Chl content, and proportional increase of Car content. Water potential of trees with deep vertical roots (Q. coccifera, Q. ilex, and P. halepensis) mainly depended on precipitation, whereas water potential of trees with shallow roots (J. phoenicea) depended not only on precipitation but also on ambient temperature. and F. The effects of NaCl (200 mM) and osmotic stress generated by polyethylene glycol (PEG) on PSII maximal quantum efficiency, photosynthetic CO2/H2O gas exchange at two CO2 concentrations, content of chlorophyll, proline, and malondialdehyde were investigated in shoots of C4 xerohalophyte Haloxylon aphyllum (Chenopodiaceae). The PEG treatment induced a low water osmotic potential (-0.4 MPa) and inhibited photosynthesis (by a factor of 2) and transpiration (by a factor of 4). The NaCl treatment, at equal osmoticity conditions, reduced transpiration (by a factor of 2) and stimulated photosynthesis (by a factor of 2.5). Only the
PEG-treated plants showed osmotic stress effects, which were demonstrated by an increase in proline and malondialdehyde contents in the shoot tissue. The data indicated that the halophilic character of this species was essential for maintaining the plant water status and photosynthesis under osmoticity induced by NaCl treatment. Herewith, the presence of C4-type photosynthesis appeared to be just an auxiliary mechanism, because this xerohalophyte did not reveal the efficiency in water use typical for C4 plants under osmotic stress, in the absence of a saline substrate., Z. Species composition and photosynthetic characteristics of dominant species of ungrazed plot (UG), overgrazed plot (OG), and restored grazed plot (RG) were determined in the Xilin River Basin, Inner Mongolia, China. Both heavily grazing and restoration significantly affected the composition of different species and life forms. Leymus chinensis, Stipa grandis, and Cleistogenes polyphylla, three dominant perennial grasses in UG plot, contributed 58.9 % aboveground biomass to that of whole community, and showed higher net photosynthetic rate (PN), transpiration rate (E), and intrinsic water-use efficiency (WUE). In OG plot, relative biomass of L. chinensis and S. grandis significantly decreased, while relative biomass of three shrubs/sub-shrubs, Caragana microphylla, Artemisia frigida, and Kochia prostrata, obviously increased. Heavy grazing significantly decreased PN, E, and WUE of L. chinensis and S. grandis, while shrubs/sub-shrubs showed significantly higher photosynthetic activity and WUE than the grasses. After 18-year restoration, photosynthetic activities of L. chinensis and S. grandis were significantly higher than those in the OG plot. The proportion of L. chinensis, S. grandis, and C. microphylla significantly increased, and relative biomass of C. polyphylla, A. frigida, and K. prostrata markedly declined in RG plot. We found close relationships between physiological properties of species and their competitive advantage in different land use types. Higher photosynthetic capability means more contribution to total biomass. The variations in physiological characteristics of plants could partly explain the changes in species composition during degrading and restoring processes of Inner Mongolia typical steppes. and S. P. Leaf gas exchange of terrestrial and epiphytic orchids from the Atlantic Rainforest in northeast Brazil was investigated under artificial growth conditions. The terrestrial orchids showed higher values of all photosynthetic parameters in comparison to epiphytic ones. There was a close relationship between PN and gs for both terrestrial and epiphytic orchids. High variability in leaf gas exchange and related traits were found in 30 genotypes of field grown finger millet. The variability in carbon exchange rate per unit leaf area (PN) can be partly attributed to the differences in the stomatal conductance (gs) and area leaf mass (ALM). The PN was positively correlated with total dry matter (TDM). However, no relationship between PN and seed yield was found. The leaf area showed a positive and significant correlation with total biomass. None of the other gas-exchange traits had significant relationship either with TDM or with seed yield. The ALM showed a strong positive association with PN. However, it was not correlated with either total biomass or seed yield. As a result, the use of ALM as surrogate for PN for identifying high biomass producing genotypes only had a limited value. Hence selection for high PN would result in higher biomass producing types.
Forty two-month-old plants of Dalbergia sissoo and D. latifolia were subjected for 56 d to water deficit induced by withholding water. Drought stress caused a significant reduction in plant height, stem diameter, net photosynthetic rate (PN), transpiration rate (E), and stomatal conductance (gs) in both species, but the reduction was greater in D. sissoo than in D. latifolia. Water use efficiency (PN/E) was adversely affected due to water stress only in D. latifolia, and intrinsic water use efficiency (PN/gs) was increased in both species. There was a slight effect of water stress on variable to maximum fluorescence (Fv/Fm) (quantum yield of photosystem 2) in both species, but the species did not differ significantly in this attribute. and M.
