Winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) cultivars Yangmai 9 (water-logging tolerant) and Yumai 34 (water-logging sensitive) were subjected to water-logging (WL) from 7 d after anthesis to determine the responses of photosynthesis and anti-oxidative enzyme activities in flag leaf. At 15 d after treatment (DAT), net photosynthetic rate under WL was only 3.7 and 8.9 µmol(CO2) m-2 s-1 in Yumai 34 and Yangmai 9, respectively, which was much lower than in the control. Ratios of variable to maximum and variable to initial fluorescence, actual photosynthetic efficiency, and photochemical quenching were much lower, while initial fluorescence and non-photochemical quenching were much higher under WL than in control, indicating damage to photosystem 2. WL decreased activities of superoxide dismutase and catalase in both cultivars, and activity of peroxidase (POD) in Yumai 34, while POD activity in Yangmai 9 was mostly increased. Photosynthetic characteristics of two hybrid rice combinations, Peiai 64S/E32 and Shanyou 63, were compared at the panicle differentiation stage. As compared with Shanyou 63, the new combination Peiai 64S/E32 showed a significantly higher net photosynthetic rate (PN), apparent quantum yield of carbon assimilation (Φc), carboxylation efficiency (CE), and photorespiratory rate (RP) as well as leaf chlorophyll content, but a significantly lower dark respiration rate (RD) and compensation irradiance (Ic). It also showed a slightly higher photochemical efficiency (Fv/Fm and ΔF/Fm') of photosystem 2, a lower non-photochemical quenching (qN), and a similar CO2 compensation concentration (Γ) as compared to Shanyou 63. and Hua Jiang ... Growth, net photosynthetic rate (PN), chlorophyll fluorescence induction kinetics, and stromal fructose-1,6-bisphosphatase (sFBPase) in annual legumes native to the Mediterranean region, two clovers (Trifolium subterraneum L. ssp. oxaloides Nyman cv. Clare and T. michelianum Savi cv. Giorgia) and two Medicago species (M. polymorpha L. cv. Anglona and M. truncatula Gaertn. cv. Paraggio), shifted from 20 to 10 °C for 1 d or developed at 10 °C were compared with controls kept at 20 °C. Cold development produced a larger stimulation of growth in the clover cv. Giorgia and the Medicago cv. Paraggio. Transferring plants to low temperatures affected PN relatively less in clovers than in Medicago plants. Development at 10 °C relieved the inhibition of photosynthesis in Giorgia and Paraggio, but not in Clare and Anglona, which correlated with increases in the maximum rate of carboxylation by ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase, RuBPCO (Vcmax), and the photon-saturated rate of electron transport (Jmax). In Medicago, transfer from high to low temperature inhibited photosynthesis in a lesser extent in Anglona than in Paraggio, which showed severe limitations at level of Vcmax and Jmax. Development at 10 °C in Paraggio produced an efficient photosynthetic cold acclimation, this being associated with a two-fold increase of quantum yield of photosystem 2 electron transport (ΔF/F'm) and with the activity of sFBPase. By contrast, Anglona showed an irreversible inhibition of PN coupled with the reduction of carbon metabolism by impairment of Calvin cycle enzyme activities such as RuBPCO and sFBPase, resulting in a poor cold acclimation of photosynthesis in this cultivar. and M. The epiphytic fern Platycerium bifurcatum grows in different habitats characterized by drought and high irradiance stress. The plant shows diurnal malate oscillations, indicative for CAM expression only in cover leaves, but not in sporotrophophyll. In P. bifurcatum cover leaves exposed to high irradiance and desiccation, the decrease in both CO2 assimilation (PN) and stomatal conductance (gs) was accompanied with occurrence of diurnal malate oscillations. Exogenously applied abscisic acid (ABA) induced the decrease in PN and gs, but no clear change in malate oscillations. The measurements of the maximum quantum efficiency of photosystem 2 (Fv/Fm) under high irradiance showed distinct photoinhibition, but no clear changes in Fv/Fm due to desiccation and ABA-treatment were found. and G. The acclimation depression of capacity of photon utilisation in photochemical reactions of photosystem 2 (PS2) can develop already after three months of cultivation of the Norway spruces (Picea abies [L.] Karst.) under elevated concentrations of CO2 (i.e., ambient, AC, + 350 µmol(CO2) mol-1 = EC) in glass domes with adjustable windows. To examine the role that duration of EC plays in acclimation response, we determined pigment contents, rate of photosynthesis, and parameters of chlorophyll a fluorescence for sun and shade needles after three seasons of EC exposure. We found responses of shaded and exposed needles to EC. Whereas the shaded needles still profited from the EC and revealed stimulated electron transport, for the exposed needles the stimulation of both electron transport activity and irradiance saturated rate of CO2 assimilation (PNmax) under EC already disappeared. No signs of the PS2 impairment were observed as judged from high values of potential quantum yield of PS2 photochemistry (FV/FM) and uniform kinetics of QA reoxidation for all variants. Therefore, the long-term acclimation of the sun-exposed needles to EC is not necessarily accompanied with the damage to the PS2 reaction centres. The eco-physiological significance of the reported differentiation between the responses of shaded and sun exposed needles to prolonged EC may be in changed contribution of the upper and lower crown layers to the production activity of the tree. Whereas for the AC spruces, PNmax of shaded needles was only less than 25 % compared to exposed ones, for the EC spruces the PNmax of shaded needles reached nearly 40 % of that estimated for the exposed ones. We investigated the strategies of four co-occurring evergreen woody species Quercus ilex, Quercus coccifera, Pinus halepensis, and Juniperus phoenicea to cope with Mediterranean field conditions. For that purpose, stem water potential, gas exchange, chlorophyll (Chl) fluorescence, and Chl and carotenoid (Car) contents were examined. We recognized two stress periods along the year, winter with low precipitation and low temperatures that led to chronic photoinhibition, and summer, when drought coincided with high radiation, leading to an increase of dynamic photoinhibition and a decrease of pigment content. Summer photoprotection was related to non-photochemical energy dissipation, electron flow to alternative sinks other than photosynthesis, decrease of Chl content, and proportional increase of Car content. Water potential of trees with deep vertical roots (Q. coccifera, Q. ilex, and P. halepensis) mainly depended on precipitation, whereas water potential of trees with shallow roots (J. phoenicea) depended not only on precipitation but also on ambient temperature. and F. Maize (Zea mays) seedlings were exposed for 6 h to strong irradiance (1 000 μmol m-1 s-1 of PPFD) at 5, 12, 17, or 25 °C, followed by an exposure to the darkness for 6 h at 22 °C. Leaf chlorophyll fluorescence, net photosynthetic rate (PN), and the amount of superoxide radicals (O2-⋅) in relation to chilling-induced photoinhibition were investigated. During the photophase, a good correlation (r=-0.879) was observed between ΦPS2 (relative quantum efficiency of PS2 electron transport) and the amount of O2-⋅. Treatment with exogenous O2-⋅ reduced the PN and ΦPS2 as the chilling stress did, that was inhibited by specific scavenger of O2-⋅. Hence chilling-induced photoinhibition might be due to the production of O2-⋅. In contrast, in the dark period, PN and ΦPS2 of the seedlings treated with the exogenous O2-⋅ were enhanced, but they were inhibited by the specific scavenger of O2-⋅, showing the photoprotective role of O2-⋅ in the recovery phase. Furthermore, in terms of the effect of exogenous O2-⋅ on the xanthophyll cycle, the O2-⋅ production suggested a promotion effect for the de-epoxidation of violaxanthin during the photophase, the epoxidation of zeaxanthin at the dark stage, and the increase of the xanthophyll pool both in the photophase and dark phase, resulting in an enhancement of the ability of non-photochemical quenching to avoid or alleviate the damage to photosynthetic apparatus. and D. Three-month-old mulberry (Morus alba L.) cultivars (drought tolerant S13 and drought sensitive S54) were subjected to water stress for 15 d. Water stress decreased the leaf water potential, net photosynthetic rate (PN), and stomatal conductance (gs) in both the cultivars. However, the magnitude of decline was comparatively greater in the sensitive cultivar (S54). Intercellular CO2 concentration (Ci) was unaltered during mild stress, but significantly increased at severe stress in both cultivars. The photosystem 2 activity significantly declined only at a severe stress in both cultivars. The Ci/gs ratio representing the mesophyll efficiency was greater in the tolerant cultivar S13. Involvement of stomatal and/or non-stomatal components in declining PN depended on the severity and duration of stress. A greenhouse experiment examined whether clonal integration improves photosynthesis of ramets of alligator weed [Alternanthera philoxeroides (Mart.) Griseb.], a widespread invasive clonal plant in China, in heterogeneous (He) nutrient habitats. The connected pairs of ramets experienced different nutrient levels [high homogeneous (Ho) nutrient, low Ho nutrient, and two He nutrient treatments]. Clonal integration significantly improved the net photosynthetic rate, stomatal conductance, transpiration rate, and minimal and maximal chlorophyll fluorescence of ramets of alligator weed in low nutrient condition. These characteristics may contribute to the success of the ramets of alligator weed in invading contrasting habitats. Based on a 20-year fertilization experiment with wheat-maize double cropping system, the effects of different long-term fertilization treatments on leaf photosynthetic characteristics and grain yield in different winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) cultivars were studied in the growing seasons of 2000-2001 and 2001-2002. A total of nine fertilization treatments were implemented, i.e. no fertilizer (CK), N fertilizer (N), N and P fertilizers (NP), N and K fertilizers (NK), N, P, and K fertilizers (NPK), only organic manure (M), organic manure and N fertilizer (MN), organic manure and N and P fertilizers (MNP), and organic manure and N, P, and K fertilizers (MNPK). With the treatments of combined organic manure and inorganic fertilizers (TMI), net photosynthetic rate (PN), maximal activity of photosystem 2, PS2 (Fv/Fm), and chlorophyll content (SPAD value) of flag leaves and leaf area index (LAI) were much higher at the mid grain filling stage (20 or 23 d post anthesis, DPA), and exhibited slower declines at the late grain filling stage (30 DPA), compared with the treatments of only inorganic fertilizers (TI). The maximal canopy photosynthetic traits expressed as PN×LAI and SPAD×LAI at the mid grain filling stage were also higher in TMI than those in TI, which resulted in different grain yields in TMI and TI. Among the treatments of TMI or among the treatments of TI, both flag leaf and canopy photosynthetic abilities and yield levels increased with the supplement of inorganic nutrients (N, P, and K fertilizers), except for the treatment of NK. Under NK, soil contents of N and K increased while that of P decreased. Hence the unbalanced nutrients in soil from the improper input of nutrients in NK treatment were probably responsible for the reduced flag leaf and canopy photosynthetic characteristics and LAI, and for the fast declining of flag leaf photosynthetic traits during grain filling, resulting in the reduced yield of NK similar to the level of CK. and D.
