The effect of elevated carbon dioxide (600±50 cm3 m-3; C600) on growth performance, biomass production, and photosynthesis of Cenchrus ciliaris L. cv. 3108 was studied. This crop responded significantly by plant height, leaf length and width, and biomass production under C600. Leaf area index increased triple fold in the crops grown in the open top chamber with C600. The biomass production in term of fresh and dry biomass accumulation increased by 134.35 (fresh) and 193.34 (dry) % over the control (C360) condition where the crops were grown for 20 d. The rate of photosynthesis and stomatal conductance increased by 24.51 and 46.33 %, respectively, in C600 over C360 plants. In comparison with C360, the rate of transpiration decreased by 6.8 % under C600. Long-term exposure (120 d) to C600 enhanced photosynthetic water use efficiency by 34 %. Also the contents of chlorophylls a and b significantly increased in C600. Thus C. ciliaris grown in C600 throughout the crop season may produce more fodder in terms of green biomass. and R. K. Under natural and greenhouse conditions we found a significant reduction in the physiological and biochemical constituents in leaves of five disease types when compared to healthy ones. The growth characteristics such as height, dry mass, photosynthetic and transpiration rates, stomatal conductance, and water use efficiency were reduced significantly more in susceptible cv. TRI-2024 than in tolerant cv. TRI-2025. Also contents of total sugars, nitrogen, amino acids, proteins, polyphenols, and catechin were reduced in diseased plant leaves. However, the reduction was more prominent in susceptible than tolerant cultivar. Canker size and barker moisture content were larger in the susceptible cultivar than in the tolerant cultivar. and P. We tested the usefulness of chlorophyll a fluorescence quenching analysis for the selection of maize parental inbred lines able to produce F1 hybrids with a high CO2 assimilation rate during growth at suboptimal temperature. Fifty inbred lines, grown at 15 °C, showed at 6 °C a broad genetic variability regarding the quantum yield of photosynthetic electron transport (ΦPS2). A decrease of ΦPS2 in sensitive lines was caused more by reduction of the efficiency of excitation energy capture by open photosystem 2 (PS2) reaction centres (Fv'/Fm') than by a drop in photochemical quenching (qP). Selected inbred lines with the highest (H) and the lowest (L) values of ΦPS2 were used for separate crossings in a diallelic arrangement. Twenty-one of H×H hybrids and 21 of the L×L hybrids were grown at 15 °C. The H×H hybrids showed at suboptimal temperature a significantly higher transport of photosynthetic electrons than the L×L hybrids at lower (400) as well as at higher [800 μmol(photon) m-2 s-1] irradiance. The mean net photosynthetic rate (PN) in H×H and L×L hybrids amounted to 8.4 and 5.8 (second leaf) and 8.5 and 7.6 μmol(CO2) m-2 s-1 (third leaf), respectively. Among the best 20 hybrids with regard to PN (values larger than the average) of second leaves, as many as 15 were derived from H lines (75 % of hybrids), whereas among the best 21 hybrids with regard to PN of the third leaves, 16 were derived from H lines (76 % of hybrids). The intensive PN of H×H hybrids was most often accompanied by less water lost via transpiration in relation to photosynthesis than in the hybrids of L lines. Hence an analysis of chlorophyll a fluorescence quenching enables the selection of inbred lines, which can produce hybrids with improved CO2 fixation and with efficient water management during growth at suboptimal temperature. and J. Anthropogenic activities are changing global precipitation regimes and result in many middle latitude arid and semiarid regions experiencing less precipitation and more extreme weather events. However, little is known about the response of active ingredient accumulation in the medicinal herb Plantago depressa Willd. Therefore, we carried out a greenhouse experiment in order to study effect of control (CK, normal water supply equal to 309 mm per four months), -30 (-WS) and +30% (+WS) of the control water supply on the photosynthesis (PN), C/N ratio, and plantamajoside accumulation in P. depressa. Our results showed that compared with the-WS and CK treatments, the +WS treatment significantly enhanced biomass, the C/N ratio, plantamajoside concentration, yield in shoots and roots, and PN, but declined the N concentration in shoots and roots. The plantamajoside concentration was positively correlated with PN, the soluble sugar content, and the C/N ratio, but negatively correlated with the N concentration. Our results suggested that, under experimental conditions, +WS increased the C/N ratio and promoted the plantamajoside accumulation of P. depressa., Z. Li, W. Bai, L. Zhang, L. Diurnal and seasonal fluctuation in ambient CO2 concentration (C^) of more than 100 cm^ m‘3 in urban areas is an important abiotic factor influencing photosynthetic activity. This was shown in a young poplar tree under controlled environmental conditions. Here, the short-term rise in from 320 to 360 cm^ m‘3 during a day resulted in a 10 % higher CO2 gain. This variation in also influenced the interpretation of CO2 exchange data. Calculation of the intemal CO2 concentration in a leaf, Q, on the basis of an assumed mean value of atmospheric CO2 of 340 cm^ m'^ led to a possible 8 % divergence ffom the actual Cj in our experiments and thus also to a falše interpretation of the results, as it concealed the photosynthetic response to a rise or decline of Cg. Additionally, the changing CO2 concentration directly influenced the measurement by the infrared gas analyzer, because of its nonlinear response. Lack of compensation for this can lead to an additional inaccuracy of 3 to 8 % in the calculation of net photosynthetic rate and Q.
Changes in growth parameters and 14CO2 and [U-14C]-sucrose incorporation into the primary metabolic pools and essential oil were investigated in leaves and stems of M. spicata treated with etherel and gibberellic acid (GA). Compared to the control, GA and etherel treatments induced significant phenotypic changes and a decrease in chlorophyll content, CO2 exchange rate, and stomatal conductance. Treatment with etherel led to increased total incorporation of 14CO2 into the leaves wheras total incorporation from 14C sucrose was decreased. When 14CO2 was fed, the incorporation into the ethanol soluble fraction, sugars, organic acids, and essential oil was significantly higher in etherel treated leaves than in the control. However, [U-14C]-sucrose feeding led to decreased label incorporation in the ethanol-soluble fraction, sugars, organic acids, and essential oils compared to the control. When 14CO2 was fed to GA treated leaves, label incorporation in ethanol-insoluble fraction, sugars, and oils was significantly higher than in the control. In contrast, when [U-14C]-sucrose was fed the incorporation in the ethanol soluble fraction, sugars, organic acids, and oil was significantly lower than in the control. Hence the hormone treatment induces a differential utilization of precursors for oil biosynthesis and accumulation and differences in partitioning of label between leaf and stem. Etherel and GA influence the partitioning of primary photosynthetic metabolites and thus modify plant growth and essential oil accumulation. and Preety Singh ... [et al.].
Influence of manganese (Mn) toxicity on photosynthesis in ricebean (Vigna umbellata) was studied by the measurement of gas exchange characteristics and chlorophyll fluorescence parameters. The net photosynthetic rate (PN), transpiration rate (E), and stomatal conductance (gs) were reduced with increasing Mn concentration in nutrient solution. The reduction in gs and E was more pronounced at 6 d of Mn treatment. However, PN declined at 2 d of Mn treatment implying that the reduction in photosynthesis was not due to the direct effect of Mn on stomatal regulation. Mn did not affect the maximum efficiency of photosystem 2 (PS2) photochemistry (Fv/Fm). A reduction in photochemical quenching (qP) and excitation capture efficiency of open PS2 (Fv'/Fm') with a concomitant increase in qN was observed. This implies that reduced demand for ATP and NADPH due to the reduction in photosynthesis causes a down-regulation of PS2 photochemistry and thus a high pH gradient (increase in qN) and limited electron transport (decreased qP). and Desiraju Subrahmanyam, V. S. Rathore.
Spearmint cultivars MSS-5, Arka, and Neera grown in nutrient culture in controlled conditions differed in plant height, number of tillers, internodal position, fresh mass, dry mass, leaf stem ratio, and chlorophyll contents. Initial transpiration rate, stomatal conductivity, and CO2 exchange rate showed better increase in MSS-5 genotype. Mn stress decreased oil content whereas the content of oil constituent carvone increased in MSS-5 and Arka. and P. Singh, A. Misra, N. K. Srivastava.
Seedlings of chile ancho pepper were grown in pots containing a pasteurized mixture of sand and a low phosphorus (P) sandy loam soil, and either inoculated (VAM) or not inoculated (NVAM) with the endomycorrhizal fungus Glomus intraradices. Long Ashton nutrient solution (LANS) was modified to supply P to the seedlings at 0, 11, and 44 g(P) m-3 (P0, P11, P44, respectively). Low P depressed net photosynthetic rate (PN), stomatal conductance (gs), phosphorus use efficiency (PN/P), and internal CO2 concentration (Ci). The mycorrhiza alleviated low P effects by increasing PN, gs, PN/P, and decreasing Ci. At P0, Ci of NVAM plants was equal to or higher than that of VAM plants, suggesting nonstomatal inhibition of photosynthesis. Gas exchange of VAM plants at P0 was similar to that of NVAM plants at P11. Endomycorrhiza increased leaf number, leaf area, shoot, root and fruit mass at P0 and P11 compared to NVAM plants. Reproductive growth was enhanced by 450 % in mycorrhizal plants at P44. Root colonization (arbuscules, vesicles, internal and extraradical hyphae development) was higher at lower P concentrations, while sporulation was unaffected. The enhanced growth and gas exchange of mycorrhizal plants was in part due to greater uptake of P and greater extraradical hyphae development. and L. Aguilera-Gomez ... [et al.].
The effects of potassium nutrition [0, 6.25, 12.50, 25.00 g(K) m-2 of K2SO4 or KCl] on gas exchange characteristics and water relations in four cultivars (CIM-448, CIM-1100, Karishma, S-12) of cotton were assessed under an arid environment. Net photosynthetic rate (PN) and transpiration rate (E) increased with increased K supply. The leaf pressure potential (Ψp) increased significantly by the addition of 25.00 g(K) m-2 compared to zero K level. The water use efficiency (PN/E) was improved by 24.6 % under the highest K dose compared to zero K. There were positive correlations (0.99**, 0.98**, 0.95**, 0.97**) between K-doses and PN, E, Ψp, and PN/E, respectively. and H. Pervez, M. Ashraf, M. I. Makhdum.
