A data base was generated for quantifying effects of thermal time (degree-days) on the appearance of new leaves, the expansion of such leaves to maximum area, their death, the appearance of new internodes below the node associated with such leaves, and the extension of these internodes to maximum length. The data base for a list of crop (agronomic and horticultural), weed, and native Tallgrass Prairie plants has been summarized, with equations for the above events as a function of degree days, with appropriate base temperatures and maximum cut-off temperatures, in a Java applet which is available at a website with the URL <http://th190-50.agn.uiuc.edu>. Associated graphical plots such as shown in this paper are also given. Branching behavior was accounted for. These events predict the effect of thermal time on leaf age and its height in the plant canopy, both important factors needed for upscaling functions for leaf behavior to those for behavior of the plant canopy. The data base is evolving to include coefficients for other species. Coefficients are used to predict the leaf area index of the canopy, which is important for predicting evapotranspiration from the crop and the protection of the soil from erosion. and X. Pan ... The effect of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) inoculation and organic slow release fertilizer (OSRF) on photosynthesis, root phosphatase activity, nutrient acquisition, and growth of Ipomoea carnea N. von Jacquin ssp. fistulosa (K. Von Martinus ex J. Choisy) D. Austin (bush morning glory) was determined in a greenhouse study. The AMF treatments consisted of a commercial isolate of Glomus intraradices and a non-colonized (NonAMF) control. The OSRF was applied at 10, 30, and 100 % of the manufacturer's recommended rate. AMF plants had a higher net photosynthetic rate (PN), higher leaf elemental N, P, and K, and generally greater growth than NonAMF plants. Total colonization levels of AMF plants ranged from 27 % (100 % OSRF) to 79 % (30 % OSRF). Root acid phosphatase (ACP) and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activities were generally higher in AMF than non-AMF plants. When compared to NonAMF at 100 % OSRF, AMF plants at 30 % OSRF had higher or comparable ACP and ALP activity, higher leaf elemental P, N, Fe, Cu, and Zn, and a greater PN (at the end of the experiment), leading to generally greater growth parameters with the lower fertility in AMF plants. We suggest that AMF increased nutrient acquisition from an organic fertilizer source by enhancing ACP and ALP activity thus facilitating P acquisition, increasing photosynthesis, and improving plant growth. and L. Ginger (Zingiber officinale Rosc.) plantlets were propagated in vitro and acclimated under different photosynthetic photon flux densities (60 and 250 µmol m-2 s-1 = LI and HI, respectively). Increases in chlorophyll (Chl) content and Chl a/b ratio were found under both irradiances. In vitro plantlets (day 0) exhibited a low photosynthesis, but chloroplasts from in vitro leaves contained well developed grana and osmiophillic globules. Photoinhibition in leaves formed in vitro was characterized by decrease of photochemical efficiency and quantum efficiency of photosystem 2 photochemistry in HI treatment during acclimation. The new leaves formed during acclimation in both treatments showed a higher photosynthetic capacity than the leaves formed in vitro. The combined effects of UV-B irradiation and foliar treatment with selenium on two buckwheat species, common (Fagopyrum esculentum Moench) and tartary [Fagopyrum tataricum (L.) Gaertn.] buckwheat, that underwent different intensity of breeding, were examined. Plants grown outdoors under three levels of UV-B radiation were studied for 9 weeks, from sowing to ripening. At week 7 they were sprayed with solution containing 1 g(Se) m-3 that presumably mitigates UV-B stress. Morphological, physiological, and biochemical parameters of the plants were monitored. Elevated UV-B radiation, corresponding to a 17 % reduction of the ozone layer, induced synthesis of UV absorbing compounds. In both buckwheat species it also caused a reduction in amounts of chlorophyll a during the time of intensive growth, an effect, which was increased in tartary buckwheat in the presence of selenium. The respiratory potential, measured as terminal electron transport system activity, was lower in plants subjected to enhanced UV-B radiation during the time of intensive growth. The effective quantum yield of photosystem 2 was also reduced due to UV-B radiation in both buckwheat species and was mitigated by the addition of Se. Plants of pepper (Capsicum amuum L.) were grown in controlled environment chambers at ambient (360 pmol mol"*) and fluctuating pulse-enriched CO2 concentrations (700 pmol mol"* daily average, ranging from 500 to 3500 pmol mol"* = ECO2) under two water regimes. A decrease in plant growth and yield together with frequent visual injuries was found in plants growing under ECO2. Root/shoot ratio was greater, chlorophyll concentration and respiration rates were lower, and stomatal conductance and relative importance of alternativě pathway respiration were higher under ECO2. The negative effects of ECO2 were more intense under high water availability. The symptoms produced by ECO2 were similar to those of resource limitation, and were alleviated with increased nutrient supply. Constant elevated CO2 concentrations (700 pmol mol"*) increased pepper production and did not produce any of the injuries described for this erratic ECO2 treatment. Thus, it is probably the erratic nátuře of the CO2 concentration and not the gas itself that was causing the injiuy.
The present study was conducted to determine the effect of exogenous application of brassinolide (BR) on Leymus chinensis grown under shade, i.e., control (100% natural light), mild shade (70% natural light), and moderate shade (50% natural light). Shade substantially enhanced the plant growth, synthesis of photosynthetic pigments, photosynthetic efficiency, and chlorophyll (Chl) fluorescence attributes of L. chinensis as compared with control. The order of increase was mild shade > moderate shade > natural light except Chl content, where the order of increase was moderate shade > mild shade > natural light. Likewise, application of BR resulted in further exacerbation of plant height, plant fresh and dry mass, but less in case of Chl and carotenoids contents, gas-exchange characteristics, and Chl fluorescence attributes. The results conclude that shade significantly enhanced plant growth through alterations in physiological attributes of L. chinensis, while, application of BR may not further improve the plant growth under shade., A. Seedlings of Erythrina variegata Lam. exposed to flooding for 10 d showed significant reduction in height, growth rates (leaf area in plant, leaf area index, relative growth rate, and specific leaf mass), biomass, chlorophyli (Chl) and carotenoid contents, and thylakoid membrane organization. Application of triacontanol partially compensated these effects and promoted height, biomass and Chl content. Starch and sugar contents were significantly higher in leaves of flooded seedlings.
Seedlings of Bidens cernua L. emerged when mean air temperature was 17.0±1.3 °C. The highest net photosynthetic rate (PN), 13.8±0.8 µmol(CO2) m-2 s-1, was monitored during the vegetative period (May-August), decreasing on an average by 50 % during flowering (August-September) and during fruiting (September-November) phases. The senescence phase (October-November) was characterised by 79, 58, and 18 % decrease of PN, chlorophyll content, and leaf area (LA), respectively, from the maximum values. The time span from seedling emergence to the end of fruiting phase was 202 d. The total plant biomass was 1.58±0.05 g of which 81 % was aboveground plant portion. The total dry mass relative growth rate averaged over the assimilation period was 0.0804±0.0002 kg kg-1 d-1, and it was correlated to both the net assimilation rate (NAR) and the leaf area ratio (LAR). and L. Seedlings of green gram (Vigna radiata cv. ADT-1 and CO-5) were exposed to daily showers of simulated acidic rain (H2SO4 : HNO3 : HCl, 4 : 2 : 1, v/v) for 10 d. The effects were analysed after 5 and 10 showers, respectively. Rain of pH 2.5 inhibited seedling growth and biomass accumulation, though in other acidic levels the effects were mostly inconsistent. Both cultivars had high degree of surface wettability indicated by high leaf surface contact angles and water-holding capacity. Treated leaves were thinner with smaller mesophyll cells. Stomatal index and trichome density were lower in contrast to epidermal cell density and stomatal frequency which increased with increasing acidity. Decreases in chlorophyll (Chl), carotenoid (Car), and starch contents in cv. ADT-1 at pH 2.5 were observed after 5 showers, while in cv. CO-5 decreases were noted only after 10 showers. Insect-infested (II) acorns germinated 3 d earlier than the healthy (H) ones. However, germination ratio of II-acorns was strongly decreased compared with H-acorns and there were great differences in activities of amylase. We found an apparently lower net photosynthetic rate and total chlorophyll contents of the first true leaf of II-acorns than of the H-ones. Maximal photochemical efficiency of photosystem 2 (PS2, Fv/Fm) decreased in seedlings germinated from II-acorns than from the H-ones. Infestation of insects, especially for weevil (Curculio spp.) had significantly negative effects on length of taproots, height of plants, dry mass (DM) of roots and the first fully expanded true leaf. Leaf area and total N content of the first true leaf declined due to limitation of resource reserves in cotyledons. Damage of cotyledons caused by weevil accounted much for poor development of seedlings germinated from II-acorns.
