The effects of iso-osmotic salinity and drought stresses on leaf net photosynthetic rate (PN) in two wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) cultivars BR 8 and Norin 61, differing in drought tolerance, were compared. In drought-sensitive Norin 61, the decline of PN was larger than that in drought-tolerant BR 8. Under NaCl treatment, PN decreased in two phases similarly in both cultivars. In the first phase, photosynthetic depression was gradual without any photochemical changes. In the second phase, photosynthetic depression was rapid and accompanied with a decline of the energy conversion efficiency in photosystem 2 (ΦPS2). Our observations suggest that the osmotic factor may induce a gradual depression of photosynthesis due to stomatal closure under both stress treatments. However, under NaCl treatment, a ionic factor (uptake and accumulation of excess Na+) may have direct effects on electron transport and cause more severe photosynthetic depression. The drought tolerance mechanism of BR 8 was insufficient to maintain single-leaf photosynthesis under salinity. and S. Muranaka, K. Shimizu, M. Kato.
Effect of drought on the mechanisms of energy dissipation was evaluated in two-month-old Arachis hypogaea cvs. 57-422, 73-30, and GC 8-35. Plants were submitted to three treatments: control (C), mild water stress (S1), and severe water stress (S2). Photosynthetic performance was evaluated as the Hill and Mehler reactions. These activities were correlated with the contents of the low and high potential forms of cytochrome (cyt) b 559, plastoquinone, cyt b 563, and cyt f. Additionally, the patterns of carotenoids and chlorophylls (Chls), as well as the alterations of Chl a fluorescence parameters were studied. Under mild water stress the regulatory mechanism at the antennae level was effective for 57-422 and GC 8-35, while in the cv. 73-30 an overcharge of photosynthetic apparatus occurred. Relative to this cv., under S1 the stability of carotene and the dissipative cycle around photosystem (PS) 2 became an important factor for the effective protection of the PS2 reaction centres. The cyclic electron flow around PS1 was important for energy dissipation under S1 only for the cvs. 57-422 and 73-30. and J. A. Lauriano ... [et al.].
Super-rice hybrids are two-line hybrid rice cultivars with 15 to 20 % higher yields than the raditional three-line hybrid rice cultivars. Response of photosynthetic functions to midday photoinhibition was compared between seedlings of the traditional hybrid rice (Oryza sativa L.) Shanyou63 and two super-rice hybrids, Hua-an3 and Liangyoupeijiu. Under strong midday sunlight, in comparison with Shanyou63, the two super-rice hybrids were less photoinhibited, as indicated by the lower loss of the net photosynthetic rate (PN), the quantum yield of photosystem 2 (ΦPS2), and the maximum and effective quantum yield of PS2 photochemistry (Fv/Fm and Fv'/Fm'). They also had a much higher transpiration rate. Hence the super-rice hybrids could protect themselves against midday photoinhibition at the cost of water. The photoprotective de-epoxidized xanthophyll cycle components, antheraxanthin (A) and zeaxanthin (Z), were accumulated more in Hua-an3 and Liangyoupeijiu than in Shanyou63, but the size of xanthophyll cycle pool of the seedlings was not affected by midday photoinhibition. Compared to Shanyou63, the super-rice hybrids were better photoprotected under natural high irradiance stress and the accumulation of Z and A, not the size of the xanthophyll pool protected the rice hybrids against photoinhibition. and Q. The photosynthetic response of three Arachis hypogaea L. cultivars (57-422, 73-30, and GC 8-35) grown for two months was measured under water available conditions, severe water stress, and 24, 72, and 93 h following re-watering. At the end of the drying cycle, all the cultivars reached dehydration, relative water content (RWC) ranging between 40 and 50 %. During dehydration, leaf stomatal conductance (gs), transpiration rate (E), and net photosynthetic rate (PN) decreased more in cvs. 57-422 and GC 8-35 than in 73-30. Instantaneous water use efficiency (WUEi) and photosynthetic capacity (Pmax) decreased mostly in cv. GC 8-35. Except in cv. GC 8-35, the activity of photosystem 1 (PS1) was only slightly affected. PS2 and ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (RuBPCO) were the main targets of water stress. After re-watering, cvs. 73-30 and GC 8-35 rapidly regained gs, E, and PN activities. Twenty-four hours after re-watering, the electron transport rates and RuBPCO activity strongly increased. PN and Pmax fully recovered later. Considering the different photosynthetic responses of the studied genotype, a general characterisation of the interaction between water stress and this metabolism is presented. and J. A. Lauriano ... Salinised (150 mM NaCl for 15 d) roots excised from salt sensitive wheat cultivar Giza 163 showed about 15-fold increase in the ratio of Na/K while salt tolerant Sakha 92 exhibited only 7.5-fold increase compared to their control ratios. Root ratio of saturated/unsaturated fatty acids was stimulated twice in the sensitive cultivar versus 1.7-fold increase in the tolerant ones. Salinity enhanced greatly the accumulation of spermine (Spm) and spermidine (Spd) contents associated with a decrease in putrescine (Put) content in both wheat cultivars. Higher ratios of Spm+Spd/Put associated with lower content of proline and low ethylene evolution were detected in shoots and roots of salt tolerant cultivar. Chlorophyll a/b ratio showed an increase from 1.3 in control of both cultivars to 1.6 and 1.4 in stressed Giza 163 and Sakha 92, respectively. A reduced Hill reaction activity (19 %) was observed in stressed chloroplasts isolated from leaves of the tolerant cultivar versus 40 % inhibition in the sensitive ones. Moreover, chloroplasts isolated from stressed leaves of the sensitive cultivar showed about 25 % reduction in fluorescence emission at 685 nm as well as shifts in the peaks in the visible region.
The study was carried out in a four-year-old super-high density olive grove in Central Italy to compare leaf gas exchanges of Spanish Arbequina and Italian Maurino olive cultivars. Overall, from mid July to mid November, Maurino had a slightly higher maximum
light-saturated net photosynthetic rate (PNmax) than Arbequina. The lowest and the highest PNmax values were recorded at the end of July and in mid November, respectively. Current-season leaves showed similar or slightly higher PNmax values than one-year-old leaves. During the day Maurino always had slightly higher values or values similar to Arbequina, with the highest PNmax being in the morning. Maurino had similar or higher dark respiration rate (RD) values compared to Arbequina. During the day, in both cultivars the RD was lower at 9:00 than in the afternoon. The pattern of the photosynthetic irradiance-response curve was similar in the two genotypes, but the apparent quantum yield (YQ) was higher in Maurino. In both cultivars intercellular CO2 concentration (Ci) tended to increase when PNmax decreased. The increase in Ci corresponded to a decrease in stomatal conductance (gs). The transpiration rate (E) increased from mid July to the beginning of August, then decreased in September and increased again in November. Particularly in the morning, the current-season leaves showed similar or slightly higher E values than the one-year-old leaves. During the day, in both cultivars and at both leaf ages, E was higher in the afternoon. No effects on leaf gas exchanges due to the presence or absence of fruit on the shoot were found. Overall, there was satisfactory physiological adaptation for Arbequina to the conditions of Central Italy and for Maurino to the superintensive grove conditions., P. Proietti, L. Nasini, and L. The thermo-sensitivity of two new pea (Pisum sativum L.) cultivars-Afila (mutant in the gene transforming leaves into mustaches) and Ranen (mutant for early ripening)-as compared to the control cultivar Pleven-4 to either low (4 °C, T4) or high temperature (38 °C, T38) was investigated by means of chlorophyll (Chl) fluorescence kinetics. The low temperature treatment decreased the photosynthetic activity, measured via a decline of the Chl fluorescence decrease ratios RFd690 and RFd735, and this was mainly due to a decline of the Chl fluorescence decrease parameter Fd and maximum Chl fluorescence Fm. In the new cv. Ranen the RFd ratios at first decreased and increased again after 24-h exposure to 4 °C, indicating its good acclimation ability to low temperature. The cold-induced changes in the photosynthetic performance of all cultivars were reversed after transferring plants back to 23 °C for 48 h. In the Chl and carotenoid (Car) contents no or little changes occurred during the T4 treatment, except for a slight but clear increase of the ratio Chl a/b and a decrease in the ratio Chl/Car. In contrast to this, the T38 treatment for 72 h decreased the RFd ratios more strongly than the T4 exposure did. In fact, an irreversible injury of the photosynthetic apparatus was caused in the control pea cv. Pleven-4 by a 48-h T38 exposure and for the new cv. Afila after a 72-h T38 exposure. In contrast, the cv. Ranen was less and little sensitive to the T38 exposure. In the heat-sensitive cvs. Pleven-4 and Afila, the decrease in RFd values at T38 was associated with a strong decline of the Chl a+b and total Car contents. The Chl a+b decline could also be followed via an increase of the Chl fluorescence ratio F690/F735. Parallel to this, a strong decline of Chl a/b from ca. 3.0 (range 2.85-3.15) to ca. 1.9 (range 1.85-1.95) occurred indicating a preferential decline of the Chl a-pigment proteins but not of the Chl a/b-pigment protein LHC2. In the relatively heat-tolerant cv. Ranen, however, the ratio Chl a/b declined only partially. After the T4 treatment the stress adaptation index Ap was higher in cv. Ranen than in controls and reached in heat-treated Ranen plants almost the starting value indicating a cold and heat stress hardening of the treated plants. The Chl fluorescence parameters and pigment contents were influenced by T38 and T4 treatments in various ways indicating that the mechanisms of low and high temperature injury of the photosynthetic apparatus are different. The new cv. Ranen exhibited a cross tolerance showing a fairly good acclimation ability to both T4 and T38, hence it is a very suitable plant for outdoor growth and for clarification of the accl, imation mechanisms to unfavourable temperatures., and K. Wheat (Triticum aestivum L. cv. HD 2329 and DL 1266-5) and sunflower (Helianthus annuus L. cv. MSFH 17 and MRSF 1754) plants were grown in field under atmospheric (360±10 cm3 m-3, AC) and elevated (650±50 cm3 m-3, EC) CO2 concentrations in open top chambers for entire period of growth and development till maturity. Net photosynthetic rate (P N) of wheat cvs. when compared at the same internal CO2 concentration (Ci), by generating PN/Ci curves, showed lower PN in EC plants than in AC ones. EC-grown wheat cultivars also showed a lesser response to irradiance than AC plants. In sunflower cultivars, PN/Ci curves and irradiance response curves were not significantly different in AC and EC plants. CO2 and irradiance responses of photosynthesis, therefore, further revealed a down-regulation of P N in wheat but not so in sunflower under long-term CO2 enrichment. Wheat cvs. accumulated in leaves mostly sugars, whereas sunflower accumulated mainly starch. This further strengthened the view that accumulation of excess assimilates in the leaves under EC as starch is not inhibitory to PN. and V. Pandurangam ... [et al.].
In this historical review we summarize discoveries related to the flowering genes in controlling leaf area index (LAI, the leaf area per unit ground area) in sorghum, soybean, or pea crop stands. We also analyze similar work on Arabidopsis and dwarf and intermediate stem height genes in wheat and rice. and G. B. Begonia, M. T. Begonia.
In a field experiment the chlorophyll (a+b) (SPAD readings) and nitrogen contents of three grass species (Festuca arundinacea Schreb., Lolium perenne L., and Lolium multiflorum Lam.) and three intergeneric hybrids of Festuca pratensis Huds. × Lolium multiflorum Lam. and Festuca arundinacea Schreb. × Lolium multiflorum Lam. were measured. Close relationships were found between SPAD readings and nitrogen leaf content (r2 = 0.873** 0.491** and 0.938**) for the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd cut, respectively. SPAD readings and N contents were closely correlated (r = 0.836**) confirming that SPAD measurements could be used in grass selection and/or breeding for high N concentration in herbage.
