Photosynthesis, chlorophyll (Chl) a fluorescence, and nitrogen metabolism of hawthorn (Crataegus pinnatifida Bge.), subjected to exogenous L-glutamic acid (GLA) (200 mg l-1, 400 mg l-1, and 800 mg l-1) that possibly affect secondary metabolic regulation, were measured. The results indicated that photosynthetic and fluorescence characteristics of hawthorn exhibited positive responses to the application of GLA. Different concentrations of GLA caused an increase in Chl content, net photosynthetic rate
(PN) and stomatal conductance (g s) as well as transpiration rate (E), and improved the carboxylation efficiency (CE), apparent quantum yield (AQY) and maximum carboxylation velocity of Rubisco (Vcmax). Application of GLA could also enhance the maximum ratio of quantum yields of photochemical and concurrent non-photochemical processes in PSII (Fv/F0), the maximal quantum yield of PSII (Fv/Fm), the probability that an absorbed photon will move an electron into the electron transport chain beyond QA (ΦEo) as well as the performance index on absorption basis (PIABS), but decreased the intercellular CO2 concentration
(Ci) and the minimal fluorescence (F0). Application of GLA also induced an increase in nitrate reductase (NR; EC 1.6.6.1) and glutamine synthetase (GS; EC 6.3.1.2) activities, and increased the soluble protein content, leaf nitrogen (N) content and N accumulation in leaves as well as the plant biomass. However, the effects were different among different concentrations of GLA, and 800 mg l-1 GLA was better. This finding suggested that application of GLA is recommended to improve the photosynthetic capacity by increasing the light energy conversion and CO2 transfer as well as the photochemical efficiency of PSII, and enhanced the nitrogen metabolism and growth and development of plants. and C. Ginger (Zingiber officinale Rosc.) plantlets were propagated in vitro and acclimated under different photosynthetic photon flux densities (60 and 250 µmol m-2 s-1 = LI and HI, respectively). Increases in chlorophyll (Chl) content and Chl a/b ratio were found under both irradiances. In vitro plantlets (day 0) exhibited a low photosynthesis, but chloroplasts from in vitro leaves contained well developed grana and osmiophillic globules. Photoinhibition in leaves formed in vitro was characterized by decrease of photochemical efficiency and quantum efficiency of photosystem 2 photochemistry in HI treatment during acclimation. The new leaves formed during acclimation in both treatments showed a higher photosynthetic capacity than the leaves formed in vitro. In carob tree (Ceratonia siliqua) radiant energy saturated net photosynthetic rate (PN) during summer was about 10 % of the spring values. This was accompanied by a reduction in stomatal conductance (gs), which only partially explains the strong reduction in PN. Photosynthetic capacity (Pmax) and quantum yield (Φ), both measured under saturating CO2, had the maximum in spring (about 34 μmol m-2 s-1 and 0.08 mol mol-1, respectively) and both decreased in late summer to about 55 % of their spring values. Despite strong decreases in Φ, photoinhibition of photosystem 2 (PS2) was negligible or easily reversible in carob leaves subjected to summer drought, since Fv/Fm, measured in the morning, did not show appreciable changes. The recovery of affected parameters was very rapid after the first rains in late October. The chlorophyll (Chl) alb ratio in the end of the summer was 2.6, a value significantly lower than 3.6 obtained in the spring, suggesting that Chl a was preferentially reduced. and J. C. Ramalho, J. Influence of drought (D) on changes of leaf water potential (Ψ) and parameters of gas exchange in D-resistant and D-sensitive genotypes of triticale and maize was compared. Soil D (from -0.01 to -2.45 MPa) was simulated by mannitol solutions. At -0.013 MPa significant differences in Ψ, net photosynthetic rate (PN), transpiration rate (E), stomatal conductance (gs), and internal CO2 concentration (Ci) of D-resistant and D-sensitive triticale and maize genotypes were not found. Together with the increase in concentration of the mannitol solution the impact of D on E and gs for D-sensitive genotypes (CHD-12, Ankora) became lower than for the D-resistant ones (CHD-247, Tina). Inversely, impact of D on Ψ was higher in D-sensitive than D-resistant genotypes. From 1 to 3 d of D, a higher decrease in PN was observed in D-resistant genotypes than in the D-sensitive ones. Under prolonged D (5-14 d) and simultaneous more severe D the decrease in PN was lower in D-resistant than in D-sensitive genotypes. Changes in Ψ, PN, E, and gs caused by D in genotypes differing in the drought susceptibility were similar for triticale and maize. Compared to control plants, increase of Ci was different for triticale and maize genotypes. Hence one of the physiological reasons of different susceptibility to D between sensitive and resistant genotypes is more efficient protection of tissue water status in resistant genotypes reflected in higher decrease in gs and limiting E compared to the sensitive ones. The effects of Cu, Cd, and Pb toxicity on photosynthesis in cucumber leaves (Cucumis sativus L.) were studied by the measurements of gas exchange characteristics, chlorophyll (Chl) fluorescence parameters, and Chl content. Concentrations of metals in sequence of 20 μM Cu, 20 and 50 μM Cd, and 1 000 μM Pb decreased the plant dry mass to 50-60 % after 10 d of treatment whereas 50 μM of Cu decreased it to 30 %. The content of Cd in leaves of plants treated with 50 μM Cd was three times higher than the contents of Cu and Pb after plant treatment with 50 μM Cu or 1 000 μM Pb. Hence Cd was transported to leaves much better than Cu and Pb. Nevertheless, the net photosynthetic rate and stomatal conductance in leaves treated with 50 μM Cu or Cd were similarly reduced. Thus, Cu was more toxic than Cd and Pb for photosynthesis in cucumber leaves. None of the investigated metals decreased internal CO2 concentrations. Also the effect of metals on potential efficiency of photosystem 2, PS2 (Fv/Fm) was negligible. The metal dependent reduction of PS2 quantum efficiency (ΦPS2) after plant adaptation in actinic irradiation was more noticeable. This could imply that reduced demand for ATP and NADPH in a dark phase of photosynthesis caused a down-regulation of PS2 photochemistry. Furthermore, in leaves of metal-treated plants the decrease in water percentage as well as lower contents of Chl and Fe were observed. Differences in structural, physiological, and biochemical features between C3 and C4 species resulted in different wateruse efficiencies and different adaptations to climate. This paper aimed at investigating, at a late successional stage, the water-use efficiency of two forage species, Dichanthium ischaemum and Dasypyrum villosum, which exhibit different growth forms (perenial, annual) and photosynthetic mechanisms (C4 and C3, respectively). The annual C3 species Avena fatua, at an early successional stage, was included in our experiments to contrast its behaviour against D. villosum. The experiment was conducted during the growing season in low-elevation grasslands of North Greece. Midday leaf water potential, net photosynthetic rate, transpiration rate and stomatal conductance were measured. Instantaneous water-use efficiency (WUE) and intrinsic water-use efficiency (WUEi) were calculated in D. ischaemum, D. villosum, and A. fatua. The results suggest that, under natural rainfall conditions, the annual C3 grass species D. villosum exhibits a similar WUE with higher values of WUEi than the perennial C4 species
D. ischaemum at late stage of succession on the low elevation Mediterranean grasslands. Moreover, A. fatua at an early successional stage, exhibited different photosynthetic behaviour than D. villosum at a late successional stage. These findings indicate that the annual C3 species D. villosum under drought and at a late successional stage seems to modify the WUE obtaining values similar to those of C4 species. The effects of Mn-deficiency on CO2 assimilation and excitation energy distribution were studied using Mn-starved maize leaves. Mn-deficiency caused about 70 % loss in the photon-saturated net photosynthetic rate (PN) compared to control leaves. The loss of PN was associated with a strong decrease in the activity of oxygen evolution complex (OEC) and the linear electron transport driven by photosystem 2 (PS2) in Mn-deficienct leaves. The photochemical quenching of PS2 (qP) and the maximum efficiency of PS2 photochemistry (Fv/Fm) decreased significantly in Mn-starved leaves under high irradiance, implicating that serious photoinhibition took place. However, the 'high-energy' fluorescence quenching (qE) decreased, which was associated with xanthophyll cycle. The results showed that the pool of de-epoxidation components of the xanthophyll cycle was lowered markedly owing to Mn deficiency. Linear electron transport driven by PS2 de-creased significantly and was approximately 70 % lower in Mn-deficient leaves than that in control, indicating less trans-thylakoid pH gradient was built in Mn deficient leaves. We suggest that the decrease of non-radiative dissipation depending on xanthophyll cycle in Mn-starved leaves is a result of the deficiency of trans-thylakoid pH gradient. and C. D. Jiang, H. Y. Bean plants Phaseolus vulgaris L. (cv. Carioca and Negro Huasteco) and Vigna unguiculata L. Walp (cv. Epace-10) were grown in a growth chamber with a photosynthetic photon flux density of 200 μmol m-2 s-1 at leaf level and air temperature of 25+1 °C. Fully expanded, first pair leaves of 12-d-old plants were submitted for 90 min to high temperature (25, 30, 35, 40, 45, and 48 °C). Chlorophyll a fluorescence parameters (ETR, qP, qN, and F0) were investigated using a modulated fluorimeter at 25 °C during recovery considered here as 48 h after stress induction period. An accentuated decrease in qP and an increase in qN at 48 °C in Carioca and Negro Huasteco was not observed in Epace-10. In response to excitation irradiance a great potential for ETR was found in Negro Huasteco at 25 °C, also demonstrated by net photosynthetic rate. At 48 °C ETR was high for Epace-10 while it was equal to zero for Carioca and Negro Huasteco. Tolerance to high temperature observed in Epace-10 provided important information about the adaptative characteristics of Vigna cultivars to warm climates. and E. S. Costa ... [et al.].
Differences between sun (E) and shaded (S) foliage were studied in a Norway spruce (Picea abies [L.] Karst.) stand. Response curves describing the dependence of the CO2 assimilation rate (PN) on the CO2 concentration at the catalytic site of ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase, RuBPCO (PN-Cc) were estimated using the simultaneous measurements of chlorophyll fluorescence and leaf gas exchange. Higher PN, higher electron transport (Ja), higher carboxylation capacity (Vc), and higher RuBPCO activity (τ) for sun acclimated needles was found. The S-needles had higher portion of internal limitation and higher CO2 compensation concentration (Γ) than the E-needles. Because higher degree of limitation of photosynthesis by carboxylation was ascertained, it can be assumed that photosynthesis in shade foliage is limited mainly by lower carboxylation capacity and by low chloroplastic CO2 concentration. and I. The chilling and light stresses were experimentally created to explore photosynthesis of Fraxinus mandshurica seedlings in northeast China. Net photosynthetic rate, stomatal conductance, and transpiration rate decreased significantly with the decline of temperature and light. Significant interaction effects of light and chilling were observed on gas exchange of photosynthesis. The minimal fluorescence yield of the dark-adapted state (F0) increased with increasing light and decreasing temperature. Both high and low light stresses induced the decreases of the maximal quantum yield of PSII photochemistry (Fv/Fm), photochemical quenching coefficient (qP), nonphotochemical quenching (NPQ), and electron transport rate. Decline of Fv/Fm and increased F0 were observed under decreasing temperatures. Decreased NPQ and qP at frost temperature suggest that F. mandschurica failed to dissipate excess light energy. No interactive effects of chilling and light on chlorophyll fluorescence parameters suggests that F. mandschurica seedlings might be adapted to combined stresses of light and chilling., X. F. Li, L.
