Raśīd Jahān (1905-1952), the first Urdu woman writer, was also the first writer to be concerned with very intimate aspects of the life of Muslim women living in pardā. Due to its depiction of a once taboo area of life, her first one-act play outrage Muslim clergy and orthodox circles in general, and paved the way for a number of later Urdu women writers.
