The impact of atrial fibrillation and atrial tachycardias (AF/AT), and their optimal treatment strategy in PH patients is still being discussed. The goal of this study was to evaluate the effect of AF/AT termination on the hemodynamic parameters in PH patients. We compared patients with pre-capillary pulmonary hypertension (PH group), left ventricular heart failure (LV-HF group), and a Control group. A repeated right heart catheterization was performed during the catheter ablation (CA) procedure. The first measurement was done in arrhythmia, the second after the sinus rhythm (SR) was restored. High frequency atrial stimulation was used to simulate AT in patients without arrhythmia presence at the time of the CA. The variation of pressure parameters in PH patients did not differ significantly from the Controls. There was a significant increase in the right ventricle pressure after the SR restoration in the LV-HF group compared to the Controls and PH group (+4 vs. -2 vs. -3 mmHg, p<0.05). The cardiac index (CI) variation was not significant when compared between the study groups. An increase of the CI after the SR restoration was found in those patients with AF (+0.31 l/min/m² [IQR 0.18; 0.58]) in contrast to those patients with organized AT/high frequency atrial stimulation (-0.09 l/min/m², [IQR - 0.45; 0.19]). This difference was statistically significant (p<0.05). The acute hemodynamic response to arrhythmia termination was not significantly different in the PH patients when compared to the Controls. In contrast to AT/high frequency stimulation, the restoration of SR in AF patients leads to an increased CI, irrespective of the presence or absence of PH.
The goal of this study was to evaluate the effect of products from a municipal wastewater treatment plant on the H2O and CO2 effluxes from two soils. The net H2O and CO2 effluxes were measured at the surface of nine beds with two different soils (Cambisol and Arenosol) and two crops (maize or vegetables). Soils in some beds were amended with stabilized sewage sludge (bed with Cambisol and maize) or composted sewage sludge (two beds with Cambisol and both crops) or were irrigated with treated wastewater (two beds with Cambisol and both crops, and one bed with Arenosol and vegetable). Remaining beds were irrigated with tap water (two beds with Cambisol and both crops, and one bed with Arenosol and vegetable). While stabilized and composted sewage sludge positively affected the CO2 emission, the effect of treated wastewater was not confirmed. Different treatments had negligible effect on the water efflux, which was mainly affected by the plant canopy that influence the temperature of the soil surface. Statistical analyses showed that trends of the CO2 efflux with respect to various scenarios measured on different days changed during the season. No significant correlations were found between the average H2O and CO2 effluxes and measured soil properties.
In a recent study, we showed how local-scale climate change impacts (increased temperature, reduced rainfall, shifts in peak rainfall) affected the hydrology of a channelised lowland European river (reduced flow, reduction in flood events, increased siltation, macrophyte growth), allowing native fish species to recolonise the bankside zone and reduce the density of invasive round goby Neogobius melanostomus by effectively removing its preferred habitat, rip-rap bank stabilisation. Here, we report on a follow-on study whereby stretches of the newly vegetated bank were stripped back to clean rip-rap to assess whether presence/absence of rip-rap was the major factor affecting non-gobiid, tubenose goby Proterorhinus semilunaris and round goby abundance. Our results confirmed rip-rap as a major factor increasing round goby abundance, and hence invasion success, on European rivers, while vegetated banks saw an increase in the abundance and diversity of non-gobiid species. While tubenose gobies showed no preference for habitat type, their numbers were significantly reduced in rip-rap colonised by larger and more aggressive round gobies. We discuss our results in light of recent artificial bank restoration measures undertaken on the Danube and Rhine and the potential role of round goby as a flagship species for cost-effective, large scale river bank restoration projects with multiple ecosystem benefits.
There are only few studies concerning about long-term effect of growth hormone (GH) replacement therapy on bone mineral density and bone microstructure. To assess effect of GH replacement therapy on bone mineral density (BMD) and trabecular bone score (TBS) in adult GH deficient (AGHD) subjects over period of 10 years. From 2005 to 2018, a prospective study of AGHD patients was conducted in national referral center for treatment of GHD. All patients received subcutaneous recombinant human GH in an IGF-1-normalizing regimen once a day. Lumbar spine (L-spine) and total hip (TH) BMD using Hologic densitometers were measured at baseline and every two years during treatment with rhGH. TBS was derived from L1-L4 DXA using iNsight® software (Medimaps, France) at each time point. Periods of measurement were baseline, year 2; 4; 6; 8 and 10. In total, 63 patients (38 males, 25 females, mean age 25.1±16 years) were included in the study. After 10 years of GH treatment, IGF-1 significantly increased (~35 %), with greatest increase at year 2. During 10-year follow-up, L-spine BMD increased approximately of 7 % (NS). TH BMD increase of 11 % during follow-up (p=0.0003). The greatest increment of BMD was achieved at year 6 on both sites, L-spine (+6 %) and TH BMD (+13 %) (p<0.05). There was no significant change of TBS during whole follow-up. In this study, sustaining positive effect of GH replacement therapy on bone density in subjects with adult GH deficiency over 10 years of follow-up was observed. Chlorophyll a (Chl a) has an asymmetrical molecular organization, which dictates its orientation and the location of the pigment in the mature photosynthetic apparatus. Although Chl a fluorescence (ChlF) is widely accepted as a proxy for plant photosynthetic performance under countless stress conditions and across species, a mechanistic understanding of this causality is missing. Since water plays a much greater role than solvent for the photosynthetic machinery, elucidating its influence on Chl a may explain the reliable reflection of plant stress response in the ChlF signal. We examine the effect of hydration from well-watered to lethal drought on ChlF imagery results across morphologically diverse species to begin testing the impact of molecular scale hydration of Chl a on ChlF. Our results support a conceptual model where water is an integral part of the photosystems' structure and directly influences Chl a behavior leading to changes in the energy partitioning and ultimately in ChlF., C. Melatonin is a well-known bioactive molecule able to mitigate photooxidative damage caused by excess light. Here we have shown that mutant Arabidopsis lines with disrupted genes for melatonin putative receptor CAND2/PMTR1 and GPA1 encoding the α-subunit of heterotrimeric G-protein were partially insensitive to melatonin treatment under high light stress. They exhibited a higher degree of photodamage due to a significantly decreased photosynthetic activity and diminished expression of chloroplast and nuclear-encoded genes and the corresponding proteins. A possible mechanism for melatonin-dependent regulation of chloroplast genes is associated with a change in the activity of the genes for chloroplast RNA polymerases. We conclude that under high light stress, melatonin may act as a hormone-like signaling molecule via the CAND2/PMTR1-mediated signaling pathway.
The Mediterranean flour moth, Ephestia kuehniella is a widespread pest of stored products and a classical object in experimental biology. In the present study, we determined its complete mitochondrial genome sequence. The genome is circular, consists of 15,327 bp and comprises 13 protein-coding, 2 rRNA- and 22 tRNA-coding genes in an order typical for the Ditrysia clade of the order Lepidoptera. A phylogenetic study of the Lepidoptera based on complete mitochondrial genomes places E. kuehniella correctly in the family Pyralidae and supports major lepidopteran taxa as phylogenetic clades. The W chromosome of E. kuehniella is an exceptionally rich reservoir of originally mitochondrial sequences (numts). Around 0.7% of the W DNA was found to be of mitochondrial origin, 83% of the mitogenome sequence was represented between 1-11 × in the W chromosome. Synechococcus is one of the most abundant photoautotrophic picoplankton in the marine ecosystem. However, it is not clear how Synechococcus assemblages respond to light intensity variation in a genus group. Here, enriched Synechococcus assemblages from in situ coastal seawater were subjected to light intensity simulation experiments in a range of 9-243 μmol(photon) m-2 s-1. Characteristics concerning physiology, genomics, and metatranscriptomics were analyzed. Physiologically, the fitting model predicted photosynthesis indications and pigment contents increased with different trends following the light intensity. Genomic sequencing demonstrated that both the phylogenetic and phenotypic compositions of Synechococcus assemblage exhibited population succession. Especially, the proportion of Synechococcus pigment type 2 was changed significantly. In metatranscriptomics, most genes were downregulated in the high-light intensity group, while photosynthesis-related genes were entirely upregulated. The high upregulation of photosynthesis-related genes, such as psbO, psbA, apcB, and cpcB, corresponded to the succession of Synechococcus genotype and was responsible for the physiological shift in response to light intensity.
Specimens of Neoechinorhynchus (Neoechinorhynchus) poonchensis sp. n. are described from Schizothorax richardsonii (Gray) in the Poonch River, Jammu and Kashmir. Specimens are thick-walled with dissimilar dorsal and ventral para-receptacle structures, anteriorly manubriated hooks, two giant nuclei in each lemniscus and many subcutaneousy. The lemnisci barely overlap the larger anterior testis, the cement gland has eight giant nuclei, and the seminal vesicle is large with thin walls. The vagina is unremarkable but the long uterus is made up of four specialised regions. Neoechinorhynchus rigidus (Van Cleave, 1928), resembles N. poonchensis sp. n. It is distinguished from N. poonchensis sp. n. by having smaller trunk, proboscis, and male reproductive structures, equal testes, unequal lemnisci with three giant nuclei each, and much larger anterior proboscis hook (130 μm in males) than that originally described by Van Cleave (1928) (70 μm in a female). Anterior hook length alone is sufficient to conclude that the N. rigidus of Datta (1937) is not the same species as the N. rigidus of Van Cleave (1928). Van Cleave's (1928) species remains valid and that of Datta (1937) is considered a different species named Neoechinorhynchus pseudorigidus sp. n., herein. Micropores of N. poonchensis sp. n. have variable distribution in different trunk regions and the Energy Dispersive X-ray analysis demonstrated higher levels of sulfur and lower levels of calcium and phosphorus. Sequences of the 18S rDNA gene from nuclear DNA, and cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (cox1) from mitochondrial DNA of N. poonchensis sp. n. were amplified and aligned with other sequences available on GenBank. Maximum likelihood (ML) and Bayesian inference (BI) analyses inferred for 18S rDNA and cox1 showed that N. poonchensis sp. n. was nested in a separate clade.
Anatomical variations and congenital anomalies of the uterine tubes (UTAVsCAs) are rare conditions, which are often undiagnosed, or accidentally diagnosed upon imaging, laparotomy, laparoscopy for unrelated condition, or during the Cesarean section. UTAVsCAs are often asymptomatic, but their clinical relevance lies in their possibly adverse impact on fertility. Since their rare occurrence, they are usually published as case reports. The most typically described are: agenesis of the uterine tubes (UTs), accessory UT (UT duplication), accessory UT ostium, and paratubal cysts (e.g. the hydatid cyst of Morgagni). UTAVsCAs are classified into an umbrella category of Müllerian duct anomalies (MDAs) which comprises anomalous development of all the organs developing from the paramesonephric (Müllerian) ducts, i.e., UTs, uterus and upper portion of the vagina. Interestingly, most of the classification systems of MDAs discuss solely the uterine and vaginal anomalies, while the UTs are often utterly ignored. This probably originates from the fact that UTs are no longer interesting for many clinicians as they think of UTs as superfluous organs whose function can be easily replaced in the in vitro fertilization (IVF) laboratory. Indeed, the modern reproductive medicine has been helping enormously with the conception of infertile couples. In many instances, the UTs are in fact successfully bypassed and a “test-tube” baby is born. Nevertheless, the UTs are still absolutely unique in providing suitable environment for fertilization and early embryo development - processes that has not been still completely understood. This fact could partially explain why the success rate of IVF is “only” around 30-50 % depending on age. Therefore, the research of the UTAVsCAs is still clinically relevant in the context of reproductive medicine and should not be omitted from research endeavors.
