The study examined photosynthetic efficiency of two barley landraces (cvs. Arabi Abiad and Arabi Aswad) through a prompt fluorescence technique under influence of 14 different abiotic stress factors. The difference in the behavior of photosynthetic parameters under the same stress factor in-between cv. Arabi Abiad and cv. Arabi Aswad indicated different mechanisms of tolerance and strategies for the conversion of light energy into chemical energy for both the landraces. This study confirmed the suitability of some chlorophyll fluorescence parameters as reliable biomarkers for screening the plants at the level of photosynthetic apparatus., H. M. Kalaji, A. Recently, we have established a model of severe stepwise normovolemic hemodilution to a hematocrit of 10 % in rats employing three different colloidal volume replacement solutions (Voluven, Volulyte and Gelafundin) that are routinely used in clinical practice at present. We did not see severe dilutional acidosis as to be expected, but a decline in urinary pH. We here looked on further mechanisms of renal acid excretion during normovolemic hemodilution. Bicarbonate, which had been removed during normovolemic hemodilution, was calculated with the help of the Henderson-Hasselbalch equation. The urinary amount of ammonium as well as phosphate was determined in residual probes. The absolute amount of free protons in urine was obtained from the pH of the respective samples. The amount of protons generated during normovolemic hemodilution was approximately 0.6 mmol. During experimental time (5.5 h), distinct urinary ammonium excretion occurred (Voluven 0.52 mmol, Volulyte 0.39 mmol and Gelafundin 0.77 mmol). Proton excretion via the phosphate buffer constituted 0.04 mmol in every experimental group. Excretion of free protons was in the range of 10-6 mmol. The present data prove that the prompt rise in urinary ammonium excretion is also valid for acute metabolic acidosis originating from severe normovolemic hemodilution., J. K. Teloh, I. N. Akutní subdurální hematom (ASDH) je nejčastější typ traumatického nitrolebního krvácení s vysokou morbiditou a mortalitou. Prezentujeme případ traumaticky vzniklého ASDH u mladé alkoholičky, u níž došlo k téměř kompletní resorpci hematomu za cca 20 hod., Acute subdural hematoma (ASDH) is the most common type of traumatic intracranial hemorrhage associated with high morbidity and mortality. The majority of cases require acute surgery. Monitoring may rarely be sufficient in smaller asymptomatic ASDH. Their resorption is usually prolonged and often associated with formation of chronic subdural hematoma (CSDH). Prompt resorption of hematomas have been described in a few cases only but some authors argue that their incidence is underestimated. We present a case of traumatic ASDH in a young alcoholic patient, in whom a follow-up CT of the brain performed about 20 hours later revealed almost complete resorption of the hematoma. Key words: acute subdural hematoma – chronic subdural hematoma – prompt resorption The authors declare they have no potential conflicts of interest concerning drugs, products, or services used in the study. The Editorial Board declares that the manuscript met the ICMJE “uniform requirements” for biomedical papers., and J. Kašík, J. Klener, L. Tittelbach, R. Tomáš, J. Šroubek, M. Mašek
Questions concerning the 1989 democratic revolutions and the collapse of "real socialism" in East Central Europe were a highlight of an international conference in Prague organized by two AS CR Institutes. The conference’s aim was to historicize the democratic revolutions of 1989, moving beyond the dominant "transitological" understanding of these revolutions in terms of the "End of Communism" and the "Beginning of Democracy." These were questions discussed: "Did these revolutions and the end of "real socialism" signal the end of revolutionary regimes and the beginning of a "restoration," or rather the replacement of worn-out communist revolutions with a new, neoliberal revolution? Or, considering the nonviolent character of the events, did they really constitute a revolution at all?" It was observed that modern political identities and ideological currents are marked by their attitudes toward the pheno-menon of revolution and toward various historical revolutionary models. Other themes were, "Democratic, Liberal, or Neoliberal Revolution? Dissent, Post-Dissent, and the Ideas of 1989. The End of History or the End of the Future? Theories of Soviet-type Society. The Second Life of the 1968 Prague Spring in 1989." Hosting the conference were the Department for the Study of Late Socialism and Post-Socialism of the Institute of Contemporary History ASCR and the Department for the Study of Modern Czech Philosophy of the Philosophy Institute ASCR, held October 2-3, 2014 at the Villa Lana. and Petr Kužel.
An empirical research, conducted by the author among university students and the working population in Prague at the beginning of 1999, showed that second person singular address forms are gradually spreading at the expense of second person plural address forms among young Czechs, especially university students. The number of various social groups whose members use second person singular address forms as a mark of fellowship is growing. The confusion and uncertainty in choosing address forms which were observed in the interviewed Czech speakers can also be interpreted as a signal of oncoming changes in address forms usage in contemporary Czech.
Many respondents found it difficult to address persons of their age by second person plural address forms as well as use second person singular forms when addressing (significantly) older people, even when offered second person singular terms by the older speaker. Plural address forms between schoolmates or workmates of the same age are widely perceived as an unnecessary barrier between communication partners. On the other hand, the usage of reciprocal plural address forms in a formal, office environment is unanimously perceived as most appropriate.
Purity, integrity and protein synthesis were studied in chloroplasts isolated from barley (Hordeum vulgare L. cv. Hassan) leaf segments incubated for 20 h in the dark, a treatment which enhances subsequent senescence. Apparently, isolated chloroplasts retained enough Mg^^ for the incorporation of radioactive ainino acids into proteins. The effects of chloramphenicol, cycloheximide and nuclease and the requirement of radiant energy indicated that amino acid incorporation was due to protein synthesis on 70S chloroplast ribosomes. The electrophoretic profile of the polypeptides synthesized was similar in intact and in broken chloroplasts. Pulse-chase assays indicated that most, if not all, polypeptides labelled in assays with isolated chloroplasts were complete polypeptides, which were also synthesized in vivo. Hence the polypeptides synthesized in vivo by chloroplasts early in senescence may be accurately and reliably studied in this systém of protein synthesis by isolated chloroplasts.
