Vision is a fascinating example of the interaction of a biological system with the outside world. The first step of translating electromagnetic energy into a biologically recognizable signal involves the phototransduction cascade in retinal photoreceptor cells. Phototransduction is the best studied example of a GTP binding protein (G protein)- coupled signal transduction pathway. A great body of knowledge about phototransduction has been established in the past several decades but there are still many unanswered questions, particularly about photoresponse recovery and adaptation. The purpose of this review is to outline the events following photon absorption by vertebrate photoreceptors, to demonstrate the great complexity of the phototransduction cascade mechanisms, and to point out some of the controversies arising from recent fmdings in the field of visual transduction.
The vertical activity of small mammals was studied in Central Bohemia, the Czech Republic, from 2003 to 2005. In total, 424 individuals were captured by the CMR technique, in live traps placed at ground level or in trees at heights of 1 and 2 m. The most commonly captured was the yellow-necked mouse, Apodemus flavicollis (96.7 %). Other species captured in the trees were: the common dormouse, Muscardinus avellanarius and the pygmy shrew, Sorex minutus</i. Although mice captures on the ground (considered as 100 %) prevailed significantly over those in trees (84.2 % and 77.9 % at 1 and 2 m, respectively), vertical activity was still quite extensive. In the peak abundance year, mice visited trees more frequently than in the year with lower abundance. There was no clear seasonal variation in vertical activity during the May–October period. No significant difference between male and female vertical activity was found. There was a slight but non-significant positive relation between the weight of an individual and the frequency of its arboreal captures. Any preference for climbing a particular tree species was not found. Our results clearly demonstrate that tree climbing by the yellow-necked mouse represents an important component of its movement activities and this fact should be considered in future studies of its ecology.
The need for a better understanding of factors controlling the variability of soil water content (θ) in space and time to adequately predict the movement of water in the soil and in the interphase soil-atmosphere is widely recognised. In this paper, we analyse how soil properties, surface cover and topography influence soil moisture (θ) over karstic lithology in a sub-humid Mediterranean mountain environment. For this analysis we have used 17 months of θ measurements with a high temporal resolution from different positions on a hillslope at the main recharge area of the Campo de Dalías aquifer, in Sierra de Gádor (Almería, SE Spain). Soil properties and surface cover vary depending on the position at the hillslope, and this variability has an important effect on θ. The higher clay content towards the lower position of the hillslope explains the increase of θ downslope at the subsurface horizon throughout the entire period studied. In the surface horizon (0-0.1 m), θ patterns coincide with those found at the subsurface horizon (0.1-0.35 m) during dry periods when the main control is also exerted by the higher percentage of clay that increases downslope and limits water depletion through evaporation. However, in wet periods, the wettest regime is found in the surface horizon at the upper position of the hillslope where plant cover, soil organic matter content, available water, unsaturated hydraulic conductivity (Kunsat) and infiltration rates are higher than in the lower positions. The presence of rock outcrops upslope the θ sampling area, acts as runoff sources, and subsurface flow generation between surface and subsurface horizons also may increase the differences between the upper and the lower positions of the hillslope during wet periods. Both rock and soil cracks and fissures act disconnecting surface water fluxes and reducing run-on to the lower position of the hillslope and thus they affect θ pattern as well as groundwater recharge. Understanding how terrain attributes, ground cover and soil factors interact for controlling θ pattern on karst hillslope is crucial to understand water fluxes in the vadose zone and dominant percolation mechanisms which also contribute to estimate groundwater recharge rates. Therefore, understanding of soil moisture dynamics provides very valuable information for designing rational strategies for the use and management of water resources, which is especially urgent in regions where groundwater supports human consume or key economic activities.
Leaf-specific Farquhar-von Caemmerer-Berry (FvCB) model was fitted to characterize the vertical profile of photosynthetic CO2 response within rice canopy. Leaf-position-specific and canopy average FvCB models were fitted to study a suitable leaf representing photosynthetic parameters at the canopy scale. The results showed that leaf photosynthesis was limited by Rubisco activity or ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate regeneration under field conditions. The maximum rate of carboxylation, maximum rate of electron transport, rate of triose phosphates utilization, and light respiration rate in the FvCB model reached the highest values for the top second leaf and then decreased, while the mesophyll diffusion conductance kept decreased in downward leaves. The integrated photosynthetic CO2-response curves for the top fourth and fifth leaves were appropriate for estimating parameters in the FvCB model at the canopy scale.
Frontal auditory evoked potentials (FAEPs) obtained as a response to the warning auditory stimulus of a contingent negative variation task from depth electrodes were investigated. The second, imperative stimulus was visual. Thirteen epileptic patients participated in the study. Records from 20 electrodes of 10 patients exhibited signs of local generation. They were localized in the motor cortices (7 cases), in the superior, medial, and inferior frontal gyri (7 cases), in the cingulate gyrus (5 cases), and in the nucleus caudatus (1 case). A typical FAEP from these generators consisted of three components: (i) first negative wave peaking at 99±13 ms; (ii) positive wave peaking at 181±21 ms; (iii) second negative wave peaking at 324±63 ms. In 11 generators no evoked activity to visual stimulus was observed; in the remaining 9 generators both auditory and visual stimuli evoked a response. The wedding, or its socio-cultural equivalent, was considered to be the most important social event in all human societies of all time. In traditional European society, everything that related to the creation of a permanent union between a man and a woman in the institution of marriage was endowed with a sacred character and was subject to public scrutiny. The study aims to provide a commented description and to interpret the wedding merriment recorded in the first half of 1990 in Šumice, one of the Czech villages in the Romanian Banat. The first part explains the issue of the ethnic enclave as a subject of ethnological study. It defines the peculiarities of Šumice in the context of the Czech Banat, and it gives an overview of the demographic development of the village. The wedding ritual (veselka) in Šumice is presented from an ethnographic-historical perspective first. The first part of the study was published in the previous, first, issue of Ethnographic Journal 2022.
