The problem of change detection in nonstatioriary time series using
linear regression models is addressed. It is assumed that the data can by accurately described by a linear regression model with piece-wise constant parameters. Due to the limitations of some classical approaches, based upon the innovation of one autoregressive (AR) model, most algorithms for the change detection presented make use of two AR models: one is a reference model, and the other one is a current model updated via a sliding block. Changes are detected when a suitable “distance” between these two models is high. Three “distance” measures are considered in the paper: cepstral distance, log-likelihood ratio (justified by GLR) and a distance involving the cross-entropy of the two conditional probabilities laws (divergence test). Other methods based on the quadratic forms of Gaussian random variables are also discussed in the paper. Finally, a change detection algorithm using three models and the evolution of Akaike Information Criterion is presented. All the presented algorithms constituted the object of evaluation by multiple simulation and háve been used to change detection in some nonstationary financial and economic time series.
Short-term weight-reducing regimens were shown to influence fatty acid composition of serum lipids unfavorably. Adding long chain n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 LC PUFA) to a low-calorie diet (LCD) could avoid these changes. The aim of this study was to examine the effect of a short-term in-patient weight-reducing regimen including LCD with yogurt enriched by low doses of n-3 PUFA (n-3 LCD). The enriched yogurt contained 790 mg of fish oil, predominantly eicosapentaenoic (20:5n-3; EPA) and docosahexaenoic (22:6n-3; DHA). Forty obese women were randomly assigned to the group consuming LCD and joghurt either with or without n-3 enrichment. Following the 3-week diet in the n-3 LCD group a significantly higher increase in the proportion of n-3 LC PUFA (sum of n-3 FA, EPA and DHA) in serum lipids was confirmed. In phospholipids (PL) a significant difference in the sum of n-6 fatty acids was found, a decrease in the n-3 LCD group and an increase in LCD group. Significantly higher increase in the PL palmitate (16:0) was shown in the LCD group. The results suggest that low doses of n-3 fatty acid enrichment can help to avoid unfavorable changes in fatty acid composition in serum lipids after a short-term weight-reducing regimen., P. In the paper a sequential monitoring scheme is proposed to detect instability of parameters in a multivariate autoregressive process. The proposed monitoring procedure is based on the quasi-likelihood scores and the quasi-maximum likelihood estimators of the respective parameters computed from a training sample, and it is designed so that the sequential test has a small probability of a false alarm and asymptotic power one as the size of the training sample is sufficiently large. The asymptotic distribution of the detector statistic is established under both the null hypothesis of no change as well as under the alternative that a change occurs.
This paper deals with the changeover from the decision tree (bivalent logic) approach to the fuzzy logic approach to highway traffic control, particularly to variable speed limit displays. The usage of existing knowledge from decision tree control is one of the most suitable methods for identification of the new fuzzy model. However, such method introduces several difficulties. These difficulties are described and possible measures are proposed. Several fuzzy logic algorithms were developed and tested by a~microsimulation model. The results are presented and the finest algorithm is recommended for testing on the Prague City Ring Road in real conditions. This paper provides a~guidance for researchers and practitioners dealing with similar problem formulation.
Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) play an important role in the pathogenesis of heart failure (HF). Our aim was to determine the activities of circulating MMP-2 and MMP-9 in patients with HF in respect of gender, comorbidities and treatment (n=51). We did not reveal any differences in circulating pro-MMP-2 and pro-MMP-9 activities between the patients with HF and without it. However, there was a decrease in activity of pro-MMP-2 in treated hypertensive participants versus healthy ones. In contrast, we observed increased pro-MMP-2 activity in hypertensive participants with coexistent HF versus hypertensive participants without HF. In addition, a decrease in pro-MMP-2 activity was shown in women suffering from HF versus men suffering from HF. In conclusion, potential inhibitory effect of antihypertensive treatment on pro-MMP-2 activity was found. Coexistent HF with hypertension probably reduces the inhibitory effect of antihypertensive treatment on pro-MMP-2 activity. Acute phase proteins and markers of proteosynthetic activity reflect the clinical activity in Crohn´s disease (CD). The impact of anti-tumor necrosis factor antibody (anti-TNF) therapy on serum levels of acute phase proteins and proteosynthetic markers was studied. Fourteen patients with active CD were treated with 5 mg per kg of anti-TNF in intravenous infusion. Clinical activity (assessed by Crohn´s disease activity index - CDAI), α-1-acid glycoprotein, haptoglobin, cholinesterase and prealbumin were assessed before and in months 1 and 5 after treatment. A sustained decrease in CDAI was observed. This was accompanied by a significant decrease in α-1-acid glycoprotein and haptoglobin in month 1 (p=0.005 and p=0.01, respectively) while in month 5 the levels of both acute phase proteins rose significantly (p=0.003 for α-1-acid glycoprotein and p=0.02 for haptoglobin). Cholinesterase and prealbumin significantly increased in month 1 after the treatment (p=0.02 and p=0.0006, respectively), the increase was sustained in cholinesterase while prealbumin levels diminished in month 5. We conclude that the clinical improvement after anti-TNF therapy for CD is accompanied by changes of acute phase proteins and proteosynthetic markers. Changes in beta-adrenergic receptors in the neurohypophysis and intermediate lobe of the rat have been characterized under physiological and stress conditions. Classical immobilization stress (IMO) was also combined with the immersion of rats into water (IMO + COLD stress). Both types of stress were applied for 30, 60 or 150 min. The intensity of stress stimuli were controlled by measuring the level of plasma ACTH. Changes in the level of plasma ACTH indicate that both types of experimental protocol induced reliable and reproducible stress conditions. Binding studies dealing with beta-adrenergic receptors in the intermediate lobe and neurohypophysis were performed in saturation binding studies by using of 125l-iodopindolol. Binding parameters, maximal binding capacity (Bmax) and dissociation constant (Kd) were assessed by nonlinear analysis with computer program Viewfit. In the neurohypophysis, no changes of Kd were found in the stressed animals. However, maximal binding capacity was decreased significantly with the increased exposure to the stress. In the intermediate lobe Kd values were slightly decreased and Bmax values decreased gradually with increasing duration of stress exposure. Our findings suggest that the process of receptor desensitization of beta-adrenergic receptors can also be detected under stress conditions in the neurohypophysis and intermediate lobe of the pituitary gland where it could contribute to the mechanisms involved in stress reactions.
The blood stream is affected by viscosity and many other haemorheological factors such as lipid peroxidation in the plasma and red blood cells. The aim of this study was to investigate the changes of haemorheological parameters after submaximal exercise in trained and untrained subjects. The results indicated that heart rate, lymphocyte count, erythrocyte deformability, plasma lipid peroxide levels and erythrocyte glutathione peroxidase activity are increased after submaximal exercise.
