The gas exchange, parameters of chlorophyll fluorescence, contents of pigments, and activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), ascorbate peroxidase (APX), as well as lipid peroxidation were investigated in two field-grown coffee species, Coffea arabica and C. liberica, exposed to drought and re-hydration. Drought caused a more pronounced inhibition of net photosynthetic rate in C. liberica compared to C. arabica. The de-epoxidation of xanthophyll cycle pigments at midday estimated by leaf reflectance was much higher in C. arabica than in C. liberica, but no significant change was found in response to drought. Under moderate drought, the activities of SOD and APX increased significantly only in C. arabica. The maximum photochemical efficiency of photosystem 2, PS2 (Fv/Fm) at predawn did not change and there was no lipid peroxidation during this time. Under severe drought Fv/Fm decreased and initial fluorescence (F0) increased for both species, and SOD activity increased, APX activity remained relatively high, and malondialdehyde (MDA) accumulated in C. arabica, while APX decreased in C. liberica. The photosynthetic apparatus of C. arabica was completely recovered after 5 d of re-irrigation as indicated by the restoration of Fv/Fm to the control values. A lack of recovery upon rewatering of C. liberica indicated irreversible damage to PS2. Hence compared to C. liberica, C. arabica possesses a higher desiccation-induced antioxidative protection and higher portion of the total pigment pool used in photoprotection, which might aid alleviating photoinhibitory damage during desiccation and photosynthesis recovery when favourable conditions are restored. and Z.-Q. Five-year-old plants of two olive cultivars (Frantoio and Moraiolo) grown in large pots were exposed for 7 to 8 months to ambient (AC) or elevated (EC) CO2 concentration in a free-air CO2 enrichment (FACE) facility. Exposure to EC enhanced net photosynthetic rate (PN) and decreased stomatal conductance, leading to greater instantaneous transpiration efficiency. Stomata density also decreased under EC, while the ratio of intercellular (Ci) to atmospheric CO2 concentration and chlorophyll content did not differ, except for the cv. Moraiolo after seven months of exposure to EC. Analysis of the relationship between photosynthesis and Ci indicated no significant change in carboxylation efficiency of ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase after five months of exposure to EC. Based on estimates derived from the PN-Ci relationship, there were no apparent treatment differences in daytime respiration, CO2 compensation concentration, CO2-saturated photosynthetic rate, or photosynthetic rate at the mean Ci, but there was a reduction in stomata limitation to PN at EC. Thus 5-year-old olive trees did not exhibit down regulation of leaf-level photosynthesis in their response to EC, though some indication of adjustment was evident for the cv. Frantoio with respect to the cv. Moraiolo. and R. Tognetti ... [et al.].
We studied photosynthetic capacity, growth, sap flow, and water-use efficiency in young trees of ‘Pink Lady’ apple (Malus domestica) that were exposed to 60 d of moisture stress. Three irrigation schemes were tested in the greenhouse: well-watered control; drought; or alternate deficit irrigation (ADI). Compared with the drought-stressed plants, those treated via ADI showed better height growth, larger scion diameters, and greater total leaf area, as well as significantly increased gains in dry biomass and rootstock diameters. However, their performance was still significantly lower than that demonstrated by continuously well-watered plants. Sap flow was greater under ADI than under drought, but less than under control conditions. The average rate of net photosynthesis, total amount of irrigation water applied, and dry biomass gain had highly significant and positive linear correlations with long-term water-use efficiency (WUEL). The same was true between average stomatal conductance and WUEL. By contrast, instantaneous water-use efficiency (WUEI) was very significantly and negatively correlated with WUEL. In addition, values for WUEL were much higher from well-watered plants when compared with either drought-stressed trees or those treated per ADI. Therefore, our results indicate that, although ‘Pink Lady’ apple normally has high WUE, it still consumes a large amount of water. Therefore, the practice of ADI following a period of long-term drought could be used to improve growth and WUEL by this cultivar., X. P. Sun ... [et al.]., and Obsahuje bibliografii
The effects of ambient levels of ozone and summer drought were assessed on a poplar clone (Populus maximowiczii Henry X P. × berolinensis Dippel - Oxford clone) in an open top chamber experiment carried out at the Curno facilities (Northern Italy). Chlorophyll (Chl) a fluorescence parameters (from both modulated and direct fluorescence) were assessed at different hours of the day (predawn, morning, midday, afternoon, and evening), from June to August 2008. This paper compares the results from predawn (PD, before sunrise) and afternoon (AN, in full sunlight) measurements, in order to evaluate the role of high sunlight as a factor influencing responses to ozone stress. Sunlight affected the maximum quantum yield of primary photochemistry (decrease of Fv/Fm) thus indicating photoinhibition. The effective quantum yield (ΦPSII) and the photochemical quenching (qP) were enhanced in the afternoon with respect to the predawn, whereas the nonphotochemical quenching (NPQ) was reduced. The effect of ozone was detected with fluorescence on well watered plants in the first week of July, before the onset of visible symptoms. As far as Fv/Fm are concerned, the differences between ozone-treated and control plants were statistically significant in the predawn, but not in the afternoon. Ozone exerted only minor effects on drought exposed plants because of the reduced stomatal ozone uptake, but effects on the IP phase of the fluorescence transient were observed also in drought-stressed plants., R. Adverse effect of caffeine consumption has been well documented in animals and in human beings. However, here we studied the influence of caffeine exposure on seedling growth of Arabidopsis and tobacco plants. Retardation in the seedling growth of these plants was observed when grown on MS medium plates containing 1 mM caffeine and their growth retarded further upon increasing the concentration of caffeine to 5 mM. Retardation in seedling size including both root and shoot size, yellowing and decrease in chlorophyll content of seedlings upon caffeine treatment indicated that caffeine exposure induced early senescence in plants. Therefore, the influence of caffeine exposure on transcript expression and activity of Rubisco in tobacco and Arabidopsis seedlings was monitored. Caffeine exposure has been found to decrease the expression and activity of Rubisco in both the plants. Hence, this study documents that caffeine exposure retarded seedling growth and one reason for this could be its negative effect on Rubisco. and P. Mohanpuria, S. K. Yadav.
Partitioning of 14C-labelled photosynthates to various parts of un-pruned tea clones TV1 and TV25 was assessed in vivo by exposing maintenance leaves to 14CO2 at monthly intervals throughout the year. The plants from shoot apex to root tip were divided into twelve components to assess the allocation and retention of 14C-photosynthates by the maintenance foliage. Out of the total photosynthates produced by the maintenance leaves, only 11.08 % was allocated to the commercially useful harvestable two and a bud shoots which is accepted as the harvest index of tea. The photosynthetically active maintenance leaves retained 19.05 % while 24.56 % was distributed to the branches. The bottom and the top parts of the trunk utilized 7.44 and 7.21 %, respectively. The thick roots at the base of the trunk, medium sized roots, pencil size roots, and feeder roots imported 7.28, 7.72, 7.65, and 8.01 % of 14C assimilates, respectively. Except retention by leaves, all the plant parts of vigorous clone TV25 required higher percentage of assimilates than TV1. The mean quantities of net photosynthates utilized by the stem and the roots were 69.37 and 30.63 %, respectively. and T. S. Barman, J. K. Saikia.
A decrease of F,„ followed with a ceitain delay by an increase of was detected in the cells of Synechococcus elongatus in the first 120 min of the photoinhibitory treatment at 56 <>0 (growth temperature). Then F,n started to rise in parallel with F,, and this process proceeded widi the same rate both in the light and in the dark at 56 °C after light treatment. On tíie contrary, an increase of F^ observed during the light treatment at 15 °C was largely reversed after subsequent transfer of the ceUs to the dark at 56 <>€ but F,q remained nearly unchanged during the dark incubation.
