Examination of seven specimens of an undescribed species of bamboo shark (Orectolobiformes: Hemiscylliidae), currently referred to as Chiloscyllium sp. 1, from Sri Lanka yielded three new species of 'tetraphyllidean' cestodes, one each in the genera Carpobothrium Shipley et Hornell, 1906, Spiniloculus Southwell, 1925, and Yorkeria Southwell, 1927. Carpobothrium marjorieae Caira, Otto et Jensen sp. n. differs from its three valid congeners in total length, number of testes, and size of the apical sucker of its anterior bothridial flap. Like Carpobothrium eleanorae Koontz et Caira, 2016 it possesses spherical eggs with highly elongate bipolar filaments, but its eggs are conspicuously larger than those of the latter species. Spiniloculus akshayi Caira, Otto et Jensen sp. n. can be distinguished from its five congeners in total length and number of proglottids. Yorkeria sachiniae Caira, Otto et Jensen sp. n. differs from its 16 congeners in number of proglottids and testes, total length, terminal proglottid, cirrus sac, and cephalic peduncle length, hook size, genital pore position, and bothridial shape. The eggs of Y. sachiniae Caira, Otto et Jensen sp. n. are spindle-shaped and bear a single long, polar filament. All three species were found to exhibit microthrix patterns on their scolices like those of the majority of their congeners that have been examined to date with scanning electron microscopy. Microtriches on the distal surfaces of the bothridial pouches of a species of Carpobothrium were characterised for the first time; C. marjorieae Caira, Otto et Jensen sp. n. was found to possess a modified form of gladiate spinithrix on this surface. Among the seven members of the genus, this is the first species of Chiloscyllium Müller et Henle that has been found to host representatives of all three of these 'tetraphyllidean' genera. However, unlike most of its congeners, a representative of the non-hooked genus Scyphophyllidium Woodland, 1927 was not found infecting Chiloscyllium sp. 1.
Three new species of Cobitis C. fasciola sp. nov., C. crassicauda
sp. nov. and C. stenocauda sp. nov. are found from the River Xinjiang and the River Le’anjiang, tributaries of Lake Poyang, belonging to the River Yangtze system, Jiangxi Province, China. These cobitid fish are described based on the morphology features such as the pigmentation pattern, shape of lamina circularis, body scales, mouth character and sequences of mitochondrial cytochrome b (cyt b) gene, which can be used for molecular identification and diagnosis of these species. Illustrations of the morphology characters of new species are given, and phylogenetic analysis identifies
deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) lineages closely related to these cobitid fish. Traditional taxonomy of cobitid fish of the subfamily Cobitinae is discussed based on the recent molecular phylogenies of these cobitid fish.
Morphology features and sequences of mitochondrial cytochrome b (cyt
b) gene were analyzed of the species Cobitis Linnaeus, 1758 from the River Pearl basin of China. Three new species of C. leptosoma sp. nov., C. wumingensis sp. nov.,and C. obtusirostra sp. nov. were described. C. leptosoma is distinguishable from its congeners by a long knife-shaped lamina circularis; a sharp and nearly filamentous tip of the pectoral-fin ray in males; four Gambetta pigment lines, L2 usually being absent, L5 consisting
of 10-12 oval blotches; and a round or oblong spot smaller than or equal to the eye diameter on the upper part of the caudal peduncle. C. wumingensis
is distinguishable by small barbels, maxillo-mandibular barbels shorter than eye diameter; a long fingerlike lamina circularis; a sharp and nearly filamentous tip of the pectoral-fin ray in males; L5 showing sexual dimorphism; a deeper bluish band pigment in females; a surface pigment with 13-14 blotches in males; and a conspicuous jet-black roundish spot smaller than or equal to the eye diameter on the upper part of the caudal peduncle.
C. obtusirostra is distinguished by a cystiform lamina circularis; a sharp and
nearly filamentous tip of the pectoral-fin ray in males; L5 consisting of 8-10 rounded blotches; and a conspicuous jet-black arcuate spot smaller than the eye diameter on the upper part of the caudal peduncle.
Three new species of diphyllidean cestodes are described from stingrays of the genus Pastinachus from the Indian and Pacific Oceans. All three new species differ from all but 10 of the 36 valid species of Echinobothrium van Beneden, 1849 in that they bear lateral hooklets arranged in a continuous band across each lateral surface of the rostellum joining the groups of dorsal and ventral apical hooks, rather than arranged in distinct dorsal and ventral groups, on each side of the apical hooks. Echinobothrium nataliae sp. n. ex Pastinachus solocirostris off Borneo differs from other relatives in the following combination of characters: number of spines in each column on the cephalic peduncle, number of lateral hooklets and number of apical hooks. Echinobothrium reginae sp. n. ex Pastinachus cf. sephen off Madagascar differs from all congeners in the following combination of characters: number of hooklets and number of spines on the cephalic peduncle. Echinobothrium vojtai sp. n. from an undescribed species of Pastinachus off Borneo differs from its congeners in the following combination of characters: number of hooklets, number of apical hooks and number of spines in each column on the cephalic peduncle. The hook formula was modified to accommodate species with lateral hooklets arranged in a continuous band as follows: {(LH) AH(A)/AH(B)}, where (LH) is the total number of lateral hooklets in a band. A table of all nominal species of Echinobothrium, showing their taxonomic status, type host and locality, number of peduncle spines in a column and hook formula, is presented. Macrobothridium djeddensis and Macrobothridium sinensis are transferred to Echinobothrium. In addition, Echinobothrium deeghai is considered as a species inquirenda.
The type species (Spiniloculus mavensis Southwell, 1925) of the previously monotypic tetraphyllidean genus Spiniloculus Southwell, 1925 is redescribed from the type material from Moreton Bay, Australia. As a consequence the identity of this species is definitively resolved. Three new species in the genus, all collected from Chiloscyllium punctatum Müller et Henle (brownbanded bambooshark), in Borneo, are described. Spiniloculus calhouni sp. n. conspicuously differs from all three of its congeners in its possession of post-poral testes. Spiniloculus fylerae sp. n. and Spiniloculus paigeae sp. n. differ from their two other congeners in that they are relatively small worms (4-6.5 and 2.2-5 mm in total length, respectively) with fewer than 30 proglottids. They can be distinguished from one another in that, while the vitelline follicles are interrupted at the level of its ovary in S. fylerae, this is not the case in S. paigeae. Furthermore, whereas the cirrus sac of the former species is pyriform, it is elongate-oval in the latter species. This brings the total number of species in the genus to four, and lends support to the suggestion that the original identity of the type host of S. mavensis as Mustelus sp. was in error. This work also extends the range of the genus to include the island of Borneo. A key to the species of Spiniloculus is provided. Morphological data generated here, using both light and scanning electron microscopy, support the suggested close affinities between Spiniloculus and Yorkeria Southwell, 1927, both of which parasitize bamboosharks.
Three new quill mite species of the genus Syringophiloidus Kethley, 1970 (Acari: Syringophilidae) from Slovakia are described and figured: S. bombycillae sp. n. from the waxwing Bombycilla garrulus (L.) (Passeriformes: Bombycillidae), S. schoeniclus sp. n. from the reed bunting Emberiza schoeniclus L. (Passeriformes: Emberizidae) and S. montanus sp. n. from the tree sparrow Passer montanus (L.) (Passeriformes: Ploceidae). A key to all known species of the genus Syringophiloidus is given.
Numerous specimens of Calydiscoides spp. from Lethrinus nebulosus and L. harak, and fewer specimens from L. lentjan, L. ravus and L. obsoletus, collected off New Caledonia, South Pacific, were examined. Three species of Calydiscoides were recognized. Calydiscoides difficilis (Yamaguti, 1953) Young, 1969 was generally the most abundant species on the five hosts. Specimens of C. difficilis were measured and compared to the type specimens (from Indonesia) and museum vouchers (from Australia and the Arabian Gulf). The morphology of the massive male copulatory organ and of haptoral sclerotized parts was similar, but specimens from the same host and from different hosts showed wide morphometric variations; it is concluded that C. difficilis has a high degree of variability, although the possibility of a species complex remains. Calydiscoides duplicostatus (Yamaguti, 1953) Young, 1969 was found on L. nebulosus, L. harak and L. lentjan; specimens were homogeneous in the three hosts and similar to the type specimens. Calydiscoides terpsichore sp. n. is described from L. nebulosus (type host) and L. harak and was uncommon in both fish. The new species, a member of the 'australis group', is characterized by its Y-shaped male copulatory organ, with the left branch bearing a trifurcated secondary branch. Lethrinus nebulosus and L. harak shared the 3 species of Calydiscoides studied here, a fact probably related with their close phylogenetic relationships. Among the 15 species of Lethrinus present in New Caledonia, 11 were examined and 9 species harboured 1-3 species of Calydiscoides each. Only 7 species of Calydiscoides were found, due to their stenoxenous specificity. Each species of Calydiscoides has 1 to 5 hosts.
Three species of Magnibursatus Naidenova, 1969 are described from marine teleosts: M. skrjabini (Vlasenko, 1931), the type species of the genus, from the gobiid Zosterisessor ophiocephalus on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast; M. bartolii sp. n. from the sparid Boops boops off the Atlantic coast of Spain; and M. minutus sp. n. from the gobiid Neogobius eurycephalus on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast. M. bartolii differs from all other Magnibursatus species in its larger sinus-sac (length >250 µm, width >150 µm) and the more posterior location of testes. This species is also unusual in that it occurs in the branchial chamber and on the gills of its host. M. minutus is distinguished by the distinctly smaller dimensions of the body (length <1000 µm, width <200 µm), organs and eggs. These species are also distinguished from both M. caudofilamentosa (Reimer, 1971) and Tyrrhenia blennii Paggi et Orecchia, 1975. A key to the species of Magnibursatus is presented.
The effects of phenylmercuric acetate (PMA) and apoferredoxin (apoFd) on the diaphorase activity of spinach ferredoxin:NADP+ oxidoreductase (FNR) in the presence of dibromothymoquinone (DBMIB) or cytochrome c (Cyt c) were studied. PMA inhibited effectively (I50 = < 5 μM) ferredoxin-dependent Cyt c reduction but did not affect evidently the enzyme activity in the presence of DBMIB as an electron acceptor. ApoFd caused also inhibition of Cyt c reduction but slightly stimulated, like ferredoxin, DBMIB reduction. We confirm a hypothesis according to which three binding sites for substrates [NADP(H), Fd-Cyt c, quinone/dichlorophenol indophenol] occur within the molecule of isolated FNR. and M. Bojko, S. Three-dimensional electrogram was used for analysis of ischemia manifestation in isolated hearts. Three parameters based on spherical coordination system were used in this study - amplitude of electrical heart vector, its azimuth and elevation. The parameters were presented as a trend. This approach reflected ischemic changes in a manner which can be easily observed and evaluated. Ischemia was analysed in seven isolated hearts of New Zealand white rabbits. It was found that (a) ischemia changes heart electric vector, (b) ischemic preconditioning has a protective effect, and (c) both of these findings can be clearly observed by the proposed method., O.
