The study discusses Libor Jan’s hypothesis that the Rajhrad Monastery was not only founded as an independent institution, but was also a collegiate chapter and not a Benedictine cloister. Jan later declared Rajhrad a significant centre for the 10th century South Moravian church and even the seat of a bishop’s filial office. Although these hypotheses were insufficiently supported, they began to be accepted in the literature. However, most of the arguments in favour of these ideas can be disproven. The author examines the so-called Pseudo-Břetislav Fakes that include the Břevnov Monestary’s claim to Rajhrad and proves the authenticity of the testimony within. The conflict between the Olomouc bishops and Břevnov is also discussed, presenting the older claims by the Prague institution. The author also analyses immunity and indulgence documents, which do not show the independence of the Rajhrad Monastery. The author also doubts the church tradition lasting from the post-Great Moravia period, which is the basis for Jan’s hypotheses. and Dana Zapletalová.
The study summarizes the development of ecclesiastical organizations in the Czech lands before 1200, taking into account the wider European context. The author first draws attention to the difficulties associated with the number and character of the preserved sources. Then he problematizes the traditional notion of ecclesiastical dignitaries as mere servants of the duke, confronting the question of tithes and examining evidence of the activity of the archdeacons and archpriests. In conclusion, he focuses on the question of building the parish organization and subscribes to the notion that this was not a centrally controlled activity, but rather a local initiative, although supported by the bishop. and David Kalhous.
Pavlína Rychterová of the ASCR's Institute of Philosophy has recently received the prestigious ERC Starting Grant for her project "Origins of the Vernacular Mode." The main focus of the project will be comparing mediaeval texts written in three languages, Latin, Czech and German. The expected benefit of the project is to evaluate knowledge concerning the origin and formation of national and language cultural identities in Central Europe. and Pavlína Rychterová.
This article studies public processions in Bohemia between the fourteenth and early seventeenth centuries. It analyzes processional functions in the context of the kingdom’s tumultuous religious development, including the Hussite revolution and subsequent co-existence of Catholic and utraquist churches. Three case studies of processions in Prague (imperial relics for ostensio reliquiarum, post-Hussite processions of Corpus Christi), Tabor (which rejects traditional forms of devotion yet employs processions in its religious and social life) and the mining town of Kutná Hora (Corpus Christi processions) illustrate the great variability of processional function: religious (indoctrination, mobilization, subversion via parody), social (cohesion), political (representation, competition) and military. and Jan Hrdina, Aleš Mudra, Marcela K.
