Second to fifth instars of nine New Caledonian species of Tingidae are described. A key to fifth instars is provided. The comparison of immature stages among the known larvae shows that translocation of marginal tubercles in larvae, considered as the general rule, is absent in New Caledonian larvae. Also, external morphology of larvae becomes more complex through development, by the addition and ramification of tubercles, as it does also through evolution. Such a tendency is reminiscent of a heterochronous phenomenon, like peramorphosis. Translocation phenomenon could be an intermediate stage of evolution in terms of aquiring more tubercles.
A new genus and new species of Cantacaderinae (Heteroptera: Tingidae) is described, Caledoderus monteithi. A key to genera is provided. The phylogenetic relationships among the Cantacaderinae, including this new genus and species, are revisited. The results are congruent with previous studies. However, the Ceratocaderini is a sister group of Carldrakeaninae and not Cantacaderini, even if only weakly supported by the analysis. Three new species of Tingidae (Tinginae: Tingini) belonging to the New Caledonian endemic genus Nobarnus Distant are described: N. albiceps, N. nigriceps and N. pilosus, N. signatus (Distant) and N. typicus. Distant are redescribed and the status of the genus is discussed and enlarged to accommodate the new species. A table of the main characters distinguishing species and a key to species are given.
The Central American genus Macrotingis Champion, 1897 was revised and the morphological characters of the species of Macrotingis and those of its sister group Ceratotingis Montemayor, 2008 were subjected to a phylogenetic analysis. A species previously placed in the genus Tigava is now Ceratotingis spatula (Monte, 1945), new combination. Cladistic analysis indicates that both genera are monophyletic and defined the relationships between species. Keys to the species in these genera are provided together with illustrations of their main morphological characters and a map of their distribution in Central America.
Four species new to science are described from Vanuatu, namely Holophygdon nishidae sp. n., Idiocysta vanuatuensis sp.n., Nesocypselas minicysta sp. n., and Tingis parvoroe sp. n.
