Photochemical efficiency, photosynthetic capacity, osmoprotectants, and relative water content (RWC) were recorded in saplings of two evergreen plants (Boehmeria rugulosa Wedd. and Olea glandulifera Wall. ex G. Don) grown inside (GL) and outside (OP) a glasshouse during the winter season. The OP plants experienced 2.0-2.5 °C lower air temperature and dew formation in comparison to GL plants. Diurnal observations indicated no change in RWC in the leaves of GL and OP plants, while significant reduction in both transpiration and net photosynthetic (PN) rates was observed in OP plants: the reduction in PN was much more prominent as was also reflected by poor water use efficiency of these plants. Similarly, OP plants also showed decrease in the apparent quantum yield and irradiance-saturated CO2 assimilation rate. The decrease in PN was not associated with decreased stomatal conductance. However, a significant reduction in the ratio of variable to maximum chlorophyll (Chl) fluorescence (Fv/Fm) and Chl content was recorded in the OP plants which also contained more total soluble saccharides but less proline contents. The greater enhancement of PN at 15 °C in comparison to measurements taken at 10 °C in OP plants over GL plants probably indicated an increase in mesophyll capacity of the OP plants' growth at increased temperature. Hence the enhanced growth and productivity of plants grown in sheltered environments could be associated to their higher photosynthetic activity that may have important bearing on their field establishment and productivity in the long run. The response varied with plant species; reduction in PN was greater in B. rugulosa than in O. glandulifera. However, the recovery of OP plants in terms of Fv/Fm in the subsequent months revealed that photosynthetic system of these plants is revocable. and S. C. Joshi, S. Chandra, L. M. S. Palni.
Diurnal courses in net photosynthetic rate (PN), stomatal conductance (gs), leaf water potential (ψ), internal CO2 concentration (ci), and water use efficiency (WUE) were studied as season progressed, in relation to environmental factors in field grown Prunus amygdalus. In sun leaves PN reached maximum between 09:00 to 11:00 h and subsequently declined when high temperature and low humidity occurred. An increase was observed late in the afternoon. A decrease in gs and ψ was found as season progressed in both years of measurements. In periods of high evaporative demand, ψ was very low, however, it did not explain the reductions of PN in all the three periods (spring, early and late summer). Midday depression of PN and gs seemed to be related with leaf temperature (Tl) and high irradiance. Increase in ci and F0 and decrease in Fv/Fm found between 12:00 and 14:00 h corresponded to the decrease in PN. Therefore, a transient modification of photosynthetic machinery might be considered. WUE was negatively correlated with vapour pressure difference of leaf to air, that decreased during the day. The September values, higher than in the previous months, were due to the lower seasonal decreases in PN than in gs. and M. C. Matos ... [et al.].
Diurnal and seasonal trends in net photosynthetic rate (PN), stomatal conductance (g), transpiration rate (E), vapour pressure deficit, temperature, photosynthetic photon flux density, and water use efficiency (WUE) were compared in a two-year-old Dalbergia sissoo and Hardwickia binata plantation. Mean daily maximum PN in D. sissoo ranged from 21.40±2.60 µmol m-2 s-1 in rainy season I to 13.21±2.64 µmol m-2 s-1 in summer whereas in H. binata it was 20.04±1.20 µmol m-2 s-1 in summer and 13.64±0.16 µmol m-2 s-1 in winter. There was a linear relationship between daily maximum PN and gs in D. sissoo but there was no strong linear relationship between PN and gs in H. binata. In D. sissoo, the reduction in gs led to a reduction in both PN and E enabling the maintenance of WUE during dry season thereby managing unfavourable environmental conditions efficiently whereas in H. binata, an increase in gs causes an increase of PN and E with a significant moderate WUE. and S. G. Saraswathi, K. Paliwal.
Net photosynthetic rate (PN), transpiration rate (E), stomatal conductance (gs), leaf water potential (ψleaf), leaf nitrogen content, and photosynthetic nitrogen use efficiency (PNUE) were compared between a typical C4 plant, Agriophyllum squarrosum and a C3 plant, Leymus chinensis, in Hunshandak Sandland, China. The plant species showed different diurnal gas exchange patterns on June 12-14 when photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD), air temperature (Tair), and water potential were moderate. PN, E, and
gs of A. squarrosum showed distinct single peak while those of L. chinensis were depressed at noon and had two peaks in their diurnal courses. Gas exchange traits of both species showed midday depression under higher photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) and T air when Ψleaf was significantly low down on August 6-8. However, those of A. squarrosum were depressed less seriously. Moreover, A. squarrosum had higher PN, Ψleaf, water use efficiency (WUE), and PNUE than L. chinensis. Thus A. squarrosum was much more tolerant to heat and high irradiance and could utilise the resources on sand area more efficiently than L. chinensis. Hence species like A. squarrosum may be introduced and protected to reconstruct the degraded sand dunes because of their higher tolerance to stress and higher resource use efficiency. and S. L. The effect of ectomycorrhizal Pisolithus tinctorius (Pt) infection was studied on the growth and photosynthetic characteristics of Pinus densiflora seedlings grown at ambient (360 µmol mol-1, AC) and elevated (720 µmol mol-1, EC) CO2 concentrations. After 18 weeks, Pt inoculation had led to significantly increased dry mass and stem diameter of P. densiflora at both CO2 concentrations, relative to non-inoculated seedlings. Moreover, EC significantly increased the ectomycorrhizal development. The phosphate content in needles inoculated with Pt was about three times higher than without inoculation at both CO2 concentrations. The PAR saturated net photosynthetic rates (Psat) of P. densiflora inoculated with Pt were clearly higher than for control seedlings at both CO2 concentrations, and the maximum net photosynthetic rate (PN) at saturated CO2 concentration (Pmax) was higher than in controls. Moreover, the carboxylation efficiency (CE) and RuBP regeneration rate of the PN/Ci curve for P. densiflora inoculated with Pt were significantly higher than for non-inoculated seedlings at both CO2 concentrations, especially at EC. The water use efficiency (WUE) of seedlings inoculated with Pt grown at EC was significantly raised. Allocation of photosynthates to roots was greater in Pt inoculated pine seedlings, because of the enhanced activity of ectomycorrhiza associated with seedlings at EC. Moreover, PN of non-inoculated seedlings grown for 18 weeks at EC tended to be down regulated; in contrast, Pt inoculated seedlings showed no down-regulation at EC. The activity of ectomycorrhiza may therefore be enhanced physiological function related to water and phosphate absorption in P. densiflora seedlings at EC. and D. S. Choi ... [et al.].
Four temperature treatments were studied in the climate controlled growth chambers of the Georgia Envirotron: 25/20, 30/25, 35/30, and 40/35 °C during 14/10 h light/dark cycle. For the first growth stage (V3-5), the highest net photosynthetic rate (PN) of sweet corn was found for the lowest temperature of 28-34 µmol m-2 s-1 while the PN for the highest temperature treatment was 50-60 % lower. We detected a gradual decline of about 1 P N unit per 1 °C increase in temperature. Maximum transpiration rate (E) fluctuated between 0.36 and 0.54 mm h-1 (≈5.0-6.5 mm d-1) for the high temperature treatment and the minimum E fluctuated between 0.25 and 0.36 mm h-1 (≈3.5-5.0 mm d-1) for the low temperature treatment. Cumulative CO2 fixation of the 40/35 °C treatment was 33.7 g m-2 d-1 and it increased by about 50 % as temperature declined. The corresponding water use efficiency (WUE) decreased from 14 to 5 g(CO2) kg-1(H2O) for the lowest and highest temperature treatments, respectively. Three main factors affected WUE, PN, and E of Zea: the high temperature which reduced PN, vapor pressure deficit (VPD) that was directly related to E but did not affect PN, and quasi stem conductance (QC) that was directly related to PN but did not affect E. As a result, WUE of the 25/20 °C temperature treatment was almost three times larger than that of 40/35 °C temperature treatment. and J. Ben-Asher, A. Garcia y Garcia, G. Hoogenboom.
Isolated and interactive effects of angular leaf spot (caused by Phaeoisariopsis griseola) and rust (caused by Uromyces appendiculatus) on leaf gas exchange and yield was studied in common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L. cv. Carioca) plants. Gas exchange was measured on 37, 44, 51, and 58 d after planting using a portable photosynthesis system. The inoculation of plants with P. griseola (P), U. appendiculatus (U), and the combination of both pathogens (P+U) caused a significant reduction of net photosynthetic rate (PN) and yield. The reduction of stomatal conductance (gs), PN, and yield was higher under P and combination of P+U than under U treatment. By effect of U, the reduction on yield was higher than the reductions on gas exchange parameters. On the treatment P+U, a reduction of 23 % in PN and a correspondent reduction of 32 % in yield was observed. The interactive effects of the pathogens on yield could be explained in part by the decreases in gs and in PN of diseased bean leaves. The combined effect of both diseases on yield and gas exchange parameters suggests an antagonistic interaction. and W. C. Jesus Junior ... [et al.].
We tested the mode of action of Cd on photosynthesis and activities of ATP-sulfurylase (ATP-S), catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), ascorbate peroxidase (APX), glutathione reductase (GR), and on contents of phytochelatins (PCs) and glutathione (GSH) in two cultivars of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) PBW-343 and WH-542 differing in yield potential. Cd treatment increased Cd content and photosynthetic activity in PBW-343 more than in WH-542. The activities of APX, GR, ATP-S, and synthesis of PCs and GSH were also increased by Cd, but the CAT and SOD activities were inhibited in both the cultivars. The efficient functioning of antioxidative enzymes, production of PCs and GSH, helped in counteracting the effects of Cd namely in PBW-343, protected photosynthetic ability, and increased the tolerance to Cd. and I. The effects of drought stress induced by polyethylene glycol, PEG (molecular mass 6000) on some ecophysiological characteristics of two wild pistachio species, Mastic and Khinjuk (P. mutica and P. khinjuk) selected as root stocks for production of edible pistachio trees (P. vera) in Iran and Turkey, were studied. Net photosynthetic rate (PN), stomatal conductance (gs), chlorophyll (Chl) fluorescence parameters, leaf water potential (Ψ1), leaf osmotic potential (Ψπ), leaf osmotic adjustment (ΔΨπ), and Chl a and b were measured. All parameters were influenced by increase in concentra-tion of PEG in the nutrient solutions. PN, gs, and Chl a were significantly higher in P. mutica than in P. khinjuk but, compared to the control treatment, P. khinjuk showed a higher resistance to drought stress than P. mutica. and A. We compared the effect of elevated temperature on morphological development, biomass accumulation and allocation, and gas exchange of three dominant plants (Caragana intermedia Kuanget H.C. Fu, Hedysarum mongolicum Turcz., and Artemisia ordosica Krasch.) growing in Chinese Maowusu sandland. Plants were grown in two temperature chambers (25/20, 28/23 °C, day/night) during 60 d. Tree height, number of leaves, and leaf area were increased in C. intermedia and H. mongolicum seedlings, while in A. ordosica temperature only affected tree height. Elevated temperature increased biomass and reduced the root : shoot ratio in C. intermedia and H. mongolicum seedlings, but not in A. ordosica seedlings. The net photosynthetic rate (PN) and transpiration rate (E) were increased at days 40 and 60 in C. intermedia and H. mongolicum seedlings, while in A. ordosica seedlings no significant effects on E were observed, and PN was increased only at day 60. Water use efficiency (WUE) was reduced at days 40 and 60 in H. mongolicum seedlings, and at day 60 in C. intermedia seedlings. No temperature effect on WUE was observed in A. ordosica seedlings. These different responses indicate that climate change could alter plant communities in Maowusu sandland. and Chun-Wang Xiao, Guang-Sheng Zhou, R. Ceulemans.
