Kniha anglického hudebního vědce (1726-1814) patří už dávno k nezbytné výstroji každého hudebního historika. Zaujme však všechny zájemce o hudbu a historii vůbec neobyčejně zajímavým, na vlastních zkušenostech a poznatcích založeným vyprávěním o hudebních poměrech, hudbě a hudebnících řady evropských zemí v 18. století (Itálie, Francie, Německo, Rakousko, Holandsko). Pro českého čtenáře mají zvláštní přitažlivost partie věnované návštěvě Čech a zvláště Prahy.

V závěru autor oceňuje dílo husitské revoluce, jejíž úspěch vidí mimo jiné v tom, že husitská církev se odtrhla od Říma, uhájila si samostatnost a stala se ve světě vzorem reformačního úsilí.
