- Description:
- Incessantly baffling Deinotheriidae. Deinotheres are bizarre and conservative evolutionary line of Neogene proboscideans. Their most remarkable feature is the presence of downturned lower tusks and the absence of the upper ones. There are many theories explaining the function of these teeth, however, their very specific direction is not consistent with any potential activities. Their exact function is still hotly debated. Detailed anatomical study of deinothere skulls revealed that the trunk was shorter in comparison with elephants, its shape is, however, still unknown.
