Natural occurrence of C4 species, life forms, and their longitudinal distribution patterns along the Northeast China Transect (NECT) were studied. Six vegetation regions experiencing similar irradiation regimes, but differing in longitude, precipitation, and altitude were selected along the NECT from 108 to 131 °E, around altitude of 43.5 °N. Seventy C4 species were identified in 41 genera and 13 families. 84 % of the total C4 species were found in four families: Gramineae (38 species), Chenopodiaceae (11 species), Cyperaceae (5 species), and Amaranthaceae (5 species). C4 grasses make up 54 % of the total identified C4 species along the NECT and form the leading C4 family in meadow, steppe, and desert along the NECT. C4Chenopodiaceae species make up about 16 % of the C4 species and become less important, particularly in the meadow and the eastern end of the NECT. 57 % of the total C4 species are therophytes and 37 % are hemicryptophytes, which is consistent with floristic composition and land utilization. In general, the number of C4 species decreased significantly from the west to the east or from dry to moist areas along the NECT, and was remarkably correlated with annual precipitation (r2= 0.677) and aridity (r2= 0.912), except for salinized meadow region. The proportion of C4 species from all the six vegetation regions was considerably correlated with these two climatic parameters (r2= 0.626 or 0.706, respectively). These findings suggest that the natural occurrence of C4 species varies significantly along the large-scale longitudinal gradient of the NECT. The notable relationship of C4 species number and proportion in the flora with variations in annual precipitation and aridity suggest that these two climatic parameters are the main factors controlling the longitudinal distribution patterns of C4 species along the NECT.
The content of chlorophylls (Chl) (a+b), total carotenoids (x+c), and the pigment ratios of Chl a/b and Chls to carotenoids (a+b)/(x+c) of green leaves of five C4 plants were determined and compared to those of C3 plants. The C4 plants were: Pacific and Chinese silvergrass (Miscanthus floridulus and Miscanthus sinensis), sugar cane (Saccharum officinarum) as well as feed and sugar maize (Zea mays). The three C3 plants were beech, ginkgo, and oak. C4 plants possess higher values for the ratio Chl a/b (3.4-4.5) as compared to the C3 plants (2.6-3.3). Sugar maize had the highest values for Chl a/b (4.04-4.70) and exceptionally high contents of total carotenoids and consequently lower values for the ratio of (a+b)/(x+c) (mean: 3.75 ± 0.6). During autumnal senescence also C4 plants showed a faster decline of Chl b as compared to Chl a yielding high values for Chl a/b of 6 to 8. Chlorophylls declined faster than carotenoids yielding low (a+b)/(x+c) values below 1.0.
The effects of short-term exposure to chilling temperature (10 °C) on sucrose synthesis in leaves of the cold-tolerant sugarcane cultivars Saccharum sinense R. cv. Yomitanzan and Saccharum sp. cv. NiF4, and the cold-sensitive cultivar S. officinarum L. cv. Badila were studied. Plants were grown at day/night temperatures of 30/25 °C, and then shifted to a constant day/night temperature of 10 °C. After 52-h exposure to the chilling temperature, sucrose content in the leaves of NiF4 and Yomitanzan showed a 2.5- to 3.5-fold increase relative to that of the control plants that had been left on day/night temperatures of 30/25 °C. No such increase was observed in Badila leaves. Similarly, starch content in the leaves of NiF4 and Yomitanzan was maintained high, but starch was depleted in Badila leaves after the 52-h exposure. During the chilling temperature, sucrose phosphate synthase (SPS; E.C.2.4.1.14) activity was relatively stable in the leaves of NiF4 and Yomitanzan, whereas in Badila leaves SPS activity significantly decreased. There was no significant change in cytosolic fructose-1,6-bisphosphatase activity for the three cultivars at the chilling temperature. This supports the hypothesis that: (1) on exposure to chilling temperature, sucrose content in sugarcane leaves is determined by the photosynthetic rate in the leaves, and is not related to SPS activity; (2) SPS activity in sugarcane leaves at chilling temperature is to be determined by sugar concentration in the leaves. and Yu-Chun Du, Akihiro Nose.
Foliar δ13C values of Calligogum kozlovi and Haloxylon ammodendron ranged from -13.13 to -15.11 ‰, while those of the rest 11 species were in the range of -22.22 to -27.73 ‰. This indicates that two of 13 dominant plant species in the Qaidam Basin possess a C4 photosynthetic pathway. Significant differences were observed for the average foliar δ13C values between C3 or C4 plant communities, between grass and shrub communities, even between the same species derived from different sites. Precipitation accounted for the major part of the differences. and H. Chen ... [et al.].
