Photosynthetic parameters and leaf carbon isotope composition (δ13C) in contrasting rice genotypes in relation to supplemental nitrogen (N) application and water management during the grain-filling period were compared. The changes in stomatal conductance (gs) and ratio of intercellular to ambient CO2 mole fraction (Ci/Ca) depended on the leaf nitrogen concentration (leaf N) in both ‘Hinohikari’ (temperate japonica genotype) and ‘IR36’ (indica genotype). In ‘Hinohikari’, δ13C reflects photosynthetic gas exchange during the grain-filling period, which is indicated by the significant response of δ13C to leaf N. In contrast, in ‘IR36’ δ13C did not depend on leaf N. This varietal difference in δ13C to leaf N can be attributed to a difference in the timing of leaf senescence. In ‘IR36’, leaf N and photosynthetic parameters decreased more rapidly, indicating earlier senescence and a shorter grain-filling period in comparison with ‘Hinohikari’. The significant increase in shoot dry mass in ‘Hinohikari’ resulting from supplemental N application, compared with nonsignificant effect observed in ‘IR36’, suggests that the timing of senescence in relation to the grainfilling period has a preponderant influence on productivity., S. A list of plant species documented over the past 25 years to exhibit Crassulacean Acid Metabolism (CAM) is presented. The list compiles all available information on these species including their growth habits, succulent parts, carbon isotope discrimination values, CAM types, CAM inducers, and CAM modifications.
In leaves of the mangrove species Avicennia germinans (L.) L. grown in salinities from 0 to 40 ‰, fluorescence, gas exchange, and δ13C analyses were done. Predawn values of Fv/Fm were about 0.75 in all the treatments suggesting that leaves did not suffer chronic photoinhibition. Conversely, midday Fv/Fm values decreased to about 0.55-0.60 which indicated strong down-regulation of photosynthesis in all treatments. Maximum photosynthetic rate (Pmax) was 14.58 ± 0.22 µmol m-2 s-1 at 0 ‰ it decreased by 21 and 37 % in plants at salinities of 10 and 40 ‰, respectively. Stomatal conductance (gs) was profoundly responsive in comparison to Pmax which resulted in a high water use efficiency. This was further confirmed by δ13C values, which increased with salinity. From day 3, after salt was removed from the soil solution, Pmax and gs increased up to 13 and 30 %, respectively. However, the values were still considerably lower than those measured in plants grown without salt addition.
In the field, supplemental application of N fertilizer to rice (Oryza sativa) shortly before the beginning of heading stage increases leaf N content and enhances photosynthesis during the grain-filling period. In search of varietal differences in leaf gas exchange in response to supplemental N application, we examined 13 rice varieties grown in the field during two successive years. The varieties included japonica and indica varieties, both of which are widely grown in Japan. The response to supplemental N application could not be separated clearly between variety groups; some of the japonica varieties, but none of the indica varieties, exhibited significant increase in stomatal conductance (gs) after supplemental N application. Supplemental N was more effective to increase stomatal aperture in the varieties with inherently lower gs. Varieties that showed greater response of g s to supplemental N application might be able to adjust their stomatal aperture with appropriate N control. Although the internal-to-ambient CO2 mole fraction ratio and the leaf carbon isotopic composition (δ13C) differed among varieties as a result of variations in stomatal aperture and the CO2 requirement of mesophyll, supplemental N application barely influenced these parameters, because it only moderately affected stomatal aperture. Since δ13C tended to increase with increasing number of days from transplantation to heading stage in japonica varieties, δ13C values were more sensitive to differences in growth rate between years than to N application., S.
