Acid rain causes damages to forest ecosystems. Here, we reported that acid rain could promote plant growth. From 2006 to 2009, one-year-old Elaeocarpus glabripetalus seedlings were sprayed with simulated acid rain (AR) (pH 2.5, 4.0, and 5.6). The maximum quantum yield efficiency of PSII and the actual photochemical quantum efficiency of PSII increased with rising AR acidity, which facilitated chlorophyll fluorescence and plant growth, as shown by a declining minimal fluorescence yield of dark-adapted state with little damage to the PSII reaction center. After the second experimental year, the plant height and ground diameter were greater at pH 2.5 than those found at pH 4.0 and 5.6. This showed the positive effects of AR on the seedling growth and photosynthesis of E. glabripetalus, revealing that this species exhibited a stronger resistance to acid deposition than some other tree species. This implies that E. glabripetalus is an acid-tolerant species., M.H. Liu, L.T. Yi, S.Q. Yu, F. Yu, X.M. Yin., and Obsahuje bibliografii
Goldspur apple (Malus pumila cv. Goldspur) is one of the main fruit trees planted in semiarid loess hilly areas. The photosynthetic efficiency in leaves of eight-year-old trees were studied under different soil water conditions with a Li-6400 portable photosynthesis system and a Li-Cor1600 portable steady state porometer in order to explore the effects of soil water stress on photosynthesis and the suitable soil water content (SWC) for water-saving irrigation of apple orchards. The results showed that the leaf net photosynthetic rate (P N), transpiration rate (E), water-use efficiency (WUE), stomatal conductance (gs), intercellular CO2 concentration (Ci), and stomatal limiting value (Ls) displayed different threshold responses to soil water variation. When SWC was within a range of about 60%-86% of field capacity (FC), PN and E were maintained in a relative steady state. At an elevated level but below 60% of FC, both PN and E decreased evidently with decreasing soil moisture. The SWC needed to support WUE in a relatively steady state and at a high level was in the range of about 50%-71% of FC. When SWC was less than 48% of FC, g s and Ls declined with decreasing soil moisture, while Ci increased rapidly. Based on the analysis of the stomatal limitation of photosynthesis using two criteria (Ci and Ls) suggested by Farquhar and Sharkey, it was implied that the predominant cause of restricting PN had changed from stomatal limitation to nonstomatal one under severe water stress. In terms of water-saving irrigation for enhancing water-use efficiency, it was concluded that in semiarid loess hilly areas, the suitable range of SWC for water-saving irrigation in goldspur apple orchards is in the range of about 50%-71% of FC, and the most severe degree of soil water stress tolerated for photosynthesis is about 48% of FC. and S. This work aimed to study the effects of commercial doses of the fungicide, Mancozeb, on the photosynthetic apparatus of lettuce young leaves (YL) and expanded leaves (EL). Seven days after Mancozeb application, chlorophyll a fluorescence, pigment contents, lipid peroxidation, and proline content were evaluated. Independently of leaf age, Mancozeb treatment reduced the efficiency of photosystem II photochemistry, increased the nonphotochemical quenching and proline content, decreased pigment contents, and induced lipid peroxidation. Moreover, EL showed a more stable photosynthetic apparatus, less prone to oxidative damages compared with YL. The parameters measured proved to be good markers for the rapid and preliminary diagnosis of fungicide toxicity., M. C. Dias, P. Figueiredo, I. F. Duarte, A. M. Gil, C. In order to investigate the effect of day/night temperature difference (DIF) on photosynthetic characteristics of tomato plants (Solanum lycopersicum, cv. Jinguan 5) at fruit stage, an experiment was carried out in climate chambers. Five day/night temperature regimes (16/34, 19/31, 25/25, 31/19, and 34/16°C) with respective DIFs of -18, -12, 0, +12, and +18 were used and measured at mean daily temperature of 25°C. The results showed that chlorophyll (Chl) a, Chl b, net photosynthetic rate (PN), stomatal conductance (gs), maximum quantum yield of PSII photochemistry (Fv/Fm), effective quantum yield of PSII photochemistry (ϕPSII), and photochemical quenching (qp) significantly increased under positive DIF, while they decreased with negative DIF. In contrast, the Chl a/b ratio and nonphotochemical quenching (NPQ) decreased under positive DIF, while increased with negative DIF. Chl a, Chl b, PN, gs, Fv/Fm, ϕPSII, and qp were larger under +12 DIF than those at +18 DIF, while Chl a/b and NPQ showed an opposite trend., X. K. Yuan., and Seznam literatury
Comparative analysis revealed that a xantha rice mutant (cv. Huangyu B) had higher ratios of chlorophyll (Chl) a/b and carotenoids/Chl, and higher photosynthetic efficiency than its wild type parent (cv. II32 B). Unexpectedly, the mutant had higher net photosynthetic rate (PN) than II32 B. This might have resulted from its lower non-photochemical quenching (qN) but higher maximal photochemical efficiency (FV/FM), higher excitation energy capture efficiency of photosystem 2 (PS2) reaction centres (FV'/FM'), higher photochemical quenching (qP), higher effective PS2 quantum yield (ΦPS2), and higher non-cyclic electron transport rate (ETR). This is the first report of a chlorophyll mutant that has higher photosynthetic efficiency and main Chl fluorescence parameters than its wild type. This mutant could become a unique material both for the basic research on photosynthesis and for the development of high yielding rice cultivars. and X.-S. Zhou ... [et al.].
We tested the usefulness of chlorophyll a fluorescence quenching analysis for the selection of maize parental inbred lines able to produce F1 hybrids with a high CO2 assimilation rate during growth at suboptimal temperature. Fifty inbred lines, grown at 15 °C, showed at 6 °C a broad genetic variability regarding the quantum yield of photosynthetic electron transport (ΦPS2). A decrease of ΦPS2 in sensitive lines was caused more by reduction of the efficiency of excitation energy capture by open photosystem 2 (PS2) reaction centres (Fv'/Fm') than by a drop in photochemical quenching (qP). Selected inbred lines with the highest (H) and the lowest (L) values of ΦPS2 were used for separate crossings in a diallelic arrangement. Twenty-one of H×H hybrids and 21 of the L×L hybrids were grown at 15 °C. The H×H hybrids showed at suboptimal temperature a significantly higher transport of photosynthetic electrons than the L×L hybrids at lower (400) as well as at higher [800 μmol(photon) m-2 s-1] irradiance. The mean net photosynthetic rate (PN) in H×H and L×L hybrids amounted to 8.4 and 5.8 (second leaf) and 8.5 and 7.6 μmol(CO2) m-2 s-1 (third leaf), respectively. Among the best 20 hybrids with regard to PN (values larger than the average) of second leaves, as many as 15 were derived from H lines (75 % of hybrids), whereas among the best 21 hybrids with regard to PN of the third leaves, 16 were derived from H lines (76 % of hybrids). The intensive PN of H×H hybrids was most often accompanied by less water lost via transpiration in relation to photosynthesis than in the hybrids of L lines. Hence an analysis of chlorophyll a fluorescence quenching enables the selection of inbred lines, which can produce hybrids with improved CO2 fixation and with efficient water management during growth at suboptimal temperature. and J. This paper reports effects of ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation on leaf anatomy and contents of chlorophyll and carotenoids, as well as photosynthetic parameters, in young sporophytes of Acrostichum danaeifolium Langsd. & Fisch. (Polypodiopsida, Pteridaceae) exposed to UV radiation treatments for 1 h daily for six weeks. The leaves showed large aerenchyma and present chloroplasts in both epidermises. After cultivation under PAR + UVA + UVB, leaves showed curling and malformed stomata on the abaxial face. After the UV treatment, chloroplasts in leaves were arranged against the inner wall of the epidermal cells. Transmission electron microscopy analysis showed some dilated thylakoids and plastoglobuli in chloroplasts and vesicles containing phenolic compounds in the cytoplasm. Differences were not observed between control and UV-treated plants in their contents of chlorophylls, carotenoids, and photosynthetic parameters. The content of cytokinins (CKs), the plant inhibitors of the final phase of plant development, senescence, is effectively controlled by irreversible degradation catalysed by cytokinin oxidase/dehydrogenase (CKX). In transgenic tobacco, denoted as AtCKX, with over-expressed CKX causing lowered CK content, we investigated changes in the time courses of chlorophyll (Chl) and xanthophyll (violaxanthin, antheraxanthin, zeaxanthin, neoxanthin, and lutein) contents. We also determined parameters of slow Chl fluorescence kinetics such as minimum Chl fluorescence yield in the darkadapted state F0, maximum quantum yield of PS2 photochemistry (Fv/Fm), maximum ratio of quantum yields of photochemical and concurrent non-photochemical processes in photosystem 2 (PS2), Fv/F0, non-photochemical quenching (NPQ), and effective quantum yield of photochemical energy conversion in PS2 (Φ2). We used three different developmental leaf stages, old, mature, and young, and compared this with time courses of these characteristics in leaves with natural CK levels. The parameters Fv/Fm, Fv/F0, and Φ2 were unchanged during ageing in AtCKX plants in contrast to control ones where a significant decrease in old leaves was found. In control plants F0 increased during ageing, but in the oldest leaf a considerable decrease was observed. This could indicate progressive damage to PS2 reaction centres and then detachment and rapid degradation of Chl. This is in agreement with time course of Chl content. NPQ decreased with age and was similar in both plant types. We observed a decline of xanthophyll contents in the oldest leaves in both plant types, but the contents were enhanced in AtCKX compared to control plants, especially of neoxanthin. The higher xanthophyll contents in the transgenic plants contribute to a better photoprotection and the fluorescence parameters indicated that photosynthetic apparatus was in better condition compared to control and it consequently postponed the onset of leaf senescence. and Z. In tobacco leaves inoculated with tobacco mosaic virus (TMV), changes in chlorophyll (Chl) and carotenoid contents, parameters of slow Chl fluorescence kinetics, i.e. the maximum quantum yield of photosystem (PS2) photochemistry Fv/Fm, the effective quantum yield of photochemical energy conversion in PS2 Φ2, ratio of quantum yields of photochemical and concurrent non-photochemical processes in PS2 Fv/F0, non-photochemical quenching (NPQ), and photochemical activities of isolated chloroplasts from systemically infected tobacco leaves were investigated. We compared two successive stages of infection, the first in the stage of vein clearing at 9th day post inoculation (dpi) and the second at 22nd dpi when two different regions, i.e. light- (LGI) or dark-green (DGI) islands in the infected leaf were apparent and symptoms were fully developed. These two different regions were measured separately. The Chl and carotenoid contents in infected leaves decreased with a progression of infection and were lowest in LGI in the second stage. Also the ratio of Chl a/b declined in similar manner. The maximum quantum yield of PS2 photochemistry Fv/Fm, was decreased in the following order: first stage, DGI, and LGI. The same is true for the ratio Fv/F0. The decrease of Φ2 in infected leaves declined as compared to their controls. On the contrary, NPQ increased in infected leaves, the highest value was found in the first infection stage. Photochemical activities of the whole electron transport chain in isolated chloroplasts dramatically declined with the progression of symptoms, the lowest value was in LGI. Similarly, but to a lesser extent, the activity of PS2 in isolated chloroplasts decreased in infected leaves. Generally, the most marked impairment of the photosynthetic apparatus was manifested in the LGI of infected leaves. and N. Wilhelmová ... [et al.].
Experiments were conducted to investigate the effects of exogenous progesterone on photochemical efficiency of PSII and turnover of D1 protein under heat stress during the grain-filling stage. Heat stress resulted in increases of hydrogen peroxide production, malondialdehyde content, and relative electrolytic leakage in wheat leaves, but these responses were alleviated by foliar application of progesterone. Meanwhile, activities of superoxide dismutase, catalase, and peroxidase were significantly improved in progesterone-pretreated leaves. Along with the alleviation of oxidative stress, higher abundances of STN8 and phosphorylated D1 protein and lower total D1 protein content in the PSII reactive center were observed in progesterone-pretreated leaves relative to controls. Consequently, progesterone raised the potential photochemical efficiency, actual photochemical efficiency, and electron transfer rate. These results indicate that foliar application of progesterone can effectively alleviate heat-induced PSII damage by enhancing antioxidant capability and regulating phosphorylation of D1 protein in wheat leaves., R.
