Description:

This contribution describes political situation of Byzantine Empire in the East in 1143 – 1180, including first war with Seljuk Sultanate of Rum in 1146, offensive campaign against Antioch in 1158 – 1159 and peace treaty between Emperor Manuel Komnenos and Sultan Kilidj Arslan II. in 1161. The final part of this article is dedicated to describe the battle of Myriokephalon, situated in modern Turkey. Byzantine army was defeated and the expedition against Seljuk capital Konya was ruined. The battle of Myriokephalon put a stop to Byzantine offensive campaigns against Seljuk Sultanate of Rum. After the death of Emperor Manuel Komnenos (1180), Seljuks achieved decisive advantage and islamization of Anatolia continued very quickly.
