Two new species of coccidian parasites are described from African reptiles. Oocysts of Eimeria foulshami sp. n. from the plated lizard Gerrhosaurus major bottegoi Del Prato of Sudan are ellipsoidal, 24.1 × 14.9 (23-26.5 × 14-17.8) µm with a bilayered, colourless oocyst wall and lack polar granules. The ellipsoidal sporocysts average 8.6 × 4.6 (7-10.6 × 4.4-7) µm and possess a prominent, globular, sporocyst residuum. Oocysts of Caryospora regentensis sp. n. from the green mamba Dendroaspis viridis Hallowell of Kenya are spherical to subspherical, 16.8 × 16.4 (16-17.6 × 15-17.2) µm with a bilayered oocyst wall and a single polar granule. The ellipsoidal sporocysts average 13.0 × 10.3 (10.2-14 × 9.2-11) µm and possess a Stieda and substieda body and a prominent globular sporocyst residuum. Oocysts of Caryospora legeri Hoare, 1933 are reported from a hissing sand snake, Psammophis sibilans sibilans L. from Nigeria, representing a new geographical record. The oocysts are slightly larger than the type, but otherwise identical. Caryospora psammophi Bray, 1960 and C. hermae Bray, 1960 from Psammophis sibilans phillipsi, oocysts of which are morphologically similar to and overlap in dimensions with C. legeri Hoare, 1933, are synonymised with the latter species. Eimeria samiae Iskander et Tadros, 1979 is emended to E. samyadeli to reflect the gender of the person the species was named after and because E. sami is preoccupied. In addition to these findings, Eimeria bohemi Modrý, Šlapeta et Koudela, 2000 and oocysts of an unidentified spherical Eimeria sp. are reported from Chamaeleo dilepis dilepis Leach from Cameroon.
Long-term water uptake of Douglas-fir and Norway spruce trees, growing in condition of Moravian upland, was studied with aim of comparing sap flow in small roots with flow in stems. Sap flow was measured by the heat field deformation method using multi-point sensors for stems and single-point sensors for roots. Differences between species were found in relationships between sap flow in tree stems and water uptake by roots, suggesting that Douglas-fir is able to take water from deeper soil more efficiently than spruce. This allows Douglas-fir to transpire more water especially during drought and grow faster than spruce. These biological features should be taken into account for future forest species compositions because they may have impact on both, forestry and hydrology.
There are many strategies to control leishmaniasis, but majority of them are inadequate. Killed Leishmania vaccine (KLV) has been applied for its immunogenicity in human and mouse model. Bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG) as adjuvant is an immunemodulator inducing humoral and cellular immune responses during zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis (ZCL). Both KLV and BCG have been applied for their immune responses in hosts for controlling leishmaniasis. In this study, KLV and BCG were applied to inhibit replication and visceralization of Leishmania major in BALB/c mice. Mice were injected with KLV and BCG, followed by infection with promastigotes of L. major. Six weeks after infection, a small nodule appeared, which was followed by development of a large lesion and visceralization. Effects of KLV and BCG, physiopathological changes, lesion size, delay of lesion formation, proliferation of amastigotes inside macrophages and detection of amastigotes in target organs were studied. Results showed that the KLV had anti-leishmanial activity by reducing lesion size on late infection. In KLV and BCG group, the average number of amastigotes in macrophages was lower than in other groups. Significant reductions in number of amastigotes in both spleen and lymph node were observed, indicating lower visceralization of Leishmania parasites in these target organs. No significant changes were presented in body weights, survival rates and degrees of splenomegaly in test group. It can be concluded that application of KLV and BCG had acceptable efficacy in reduction of skin lesions size and proliferation of parasites, even though a few side-effects were observed. It is indicated that KLV/BSG may have ability to modulate host immune responses against Leishmania parasites and to reduce pathophysiology of the disease during infection.
The response of gas exchange and chlorophyll fluorescence along with changes in simulated rainfall were studied in water stressed plants Hedysarum fruticosum var. mongolicum (H.f.m.). Net photosynthetic rate (PN), stomatal conductance (gs), leaf water potential (Ψleaf), and apparent carboxylation efficiency (PN/Ci) were significantly increased with the increase of rainfall. However, they did not change synchronously. The complete recovery of both PN and PN/Ci appeared 3 d after watering while gs and Ψleaf were recovered 1 d after treatment. Gas exchange characters increased sharply from 5 to 15 mm rainfall and then maintained steady state with increasing rainfall. During the initial phase of water recovery, photosystem 2 (PS2) activity was not affected and its complete recovery occurred also 3 d after rainfall. Hence the recovery of PN was attributed to both opening of stomata and increase in carboxylation efficiency. Hereditary haemorrhagic telangiectasia (HHT) exhibits considerable phenotypic heterogeneity. Therefore, precise mutation screening and evaluation of patient risk must be determined in every HHT family. We present an HHT-2 case with an initial life-threatening bleeding episode that led to identification of a relatively large HHT family. Exome sequencing of the family members determined HHT-associated ACVRL1C1120T variant resulting in Arg374Trp substitution at the Ser/Thr-kinase domain region. The affected members display typical epistaxis symptomatology from early childhood resulting in sideropoenia. In addition, the HHT patients also displayed dermatology findings such as facial teleangiectasias and trunk/limb white spots representing post-inflammatory hypopigmentation. Interestingly, co-segregating with modifying cytochrome P450 (CYP2C) variant in the HHT patients led to NSAID intolerance marked by increased frequency of bleeding episodes. No arterial-venous malformation of the visceral organs and brain or association with cancer were observed. The heterogeneity of clinical presentation and the role of other variants support the need of regular patient monitoring and development of a nation-wide patient registry.
Seven- to eight-week-old rabbits were infected with Eimeria intestinalis Cheissin, 1948, a highly immunogenic coccidium, or Eimeria flavescens Marotel et Guilhon, 1941, which is weakly immunogenic. Immune response was investigated at 7, 14 and 21 days post inoculation (DPI). The level of serum immunoglobulins, lymphocyte proliferation stimulated by parasite antigens and weight of mesenteric lymph nodes (MLN) showed similar dynamics in rabbits inoculated with both coccidia species. The amount of serum IgG and IgM, but not IgA, was increased from 14 DPI. The lymphocytes from MLN of infected animals significantly reacted to stimulation with parasite antigen 14 and 21 DPI and MLN were enlarged at 14 DPI. Thus, both parasite species elicited immune response characterized by these parameters in a similar manner despite of their different immunogenicity. The only apparent difference in the responses was in the percentage of CD8+ lymphocytes in the specific site of parasite development (the last third of the small intestine in E. intestinalis, caecum in E. flavescens), which increased in rabbits infected with E. intestinalis but not with E. flavescens. This parameter reflects the status of local immunity and hence the results suggest that the local reaction plays an important role in induction of protective immunity to coccidia in rabbits.
In aqueous solutions of chlorophyll (Chl) a with synthesized polypeptides, at high ratios of Chl to polypeptides (about 75-150 µM to 500 µM) clusters of polypeptides and pigment molecules were formed. The main absorption maxima of more than one formed cluster were located at about 500 nm (Soret band) and in the region of 720-806 nm (red band). The formation of these clusters was fairly slow (some hours) at room temperature and even slower at 4 °C. The rate of cluster formation increased with the increase in Chl concentration. The addition of the even low amount of reaction centres (RCs), separated from the purple bacteria Rhodobacter sphaeroides, to the sample of Chl with polypeptides caused a very strong decrease in the efficiency of cluster formation, and a change in concentration ratios of various pigment-polypeptide aggregates. It was probably a competition between the interaction of Chl with polypeptides and with the RCs. The yield of thermal deactivation of the clusters was high, much higher than that for the RCs alone and it was different for various types of cluster. The clusters absorbing at 725-750 nm were fluorescent with maximum of emission at about 770 nm, whereas clusters absorbing at about 800 nm were nonfluorescent. and H. Enomoto ... [et al.].
Political forces dominating the mainstream of the Czech political scene accuse independently living individuals of selfish privatization and extrapolated consumerism. However, the shared household model of living (not in a couple or within own family) extensively spreads among independently living individuals alongside this ''privatization''. The milieu of this specific households, which represent so called ''chosen families'' consisting of flat mates and friends in the flat or house rented in group, is along with single occupied households the source of what is described as ''urban tribes''. Precisely these independently living individuals and their specific structures in contrary prevent and confront the societal erosion and disintegration. Their life-styles and everyday practices extensively lead to activities contributing to community revival at the local level as well as to maintaining of an open character of the society more generally.
The article aims to give a concise overview of the development and background of gender studies programs as they can be found at European universities today. As the final institutionalized forms of such programs differ according to the specific goals, strategies and conditions at the given university, the article finishes with the presentation of two different gender studies programmes. Namely, the gender studies bachelor's program, running since the academic year 2004/2005 at Masaryk University in Brno and the master's program at the University of Vienna, starting in the academic year 2006/2007. The framework of my considerations is based on the assumption that the roots of gender studies go back to the second wave women's movement, which developed within a - political and societal - non-communistic context of the 1960s and 1970s. For this reason, the article first adresses the origins and developments of gender studies within this non-communist context, then takes a short look at the communist context and finally deals with the reception and criticism of gender studies within a post-communist context.
Since its recovery in 1982, Comet Halley has been the focus of an unparalleled global scientific effort of exploration. Remote and
in-situ measurements were conducted from the ground, from Earth orbit, from Venus orbit, from interplanetary space, and from the comet itself. Many discoveries, such as the presence of an unexpectedly large and dark nucleus or the abundance of organic presence of organic material, have led to major changes in our ideas about the general nature of comets. In this report, results of various studies are summarized.
