The endoparasitic helminth communities of the European eel, Anguilla anguilla (L.), were investigated in four meanders, cut off from the rivers Leie and Scheldt in western Handers, Belgium. Six species of helminths (2 cestodes, 2 nematodes and 2 acanthocephalans) were found. The dominant parasite species was the nematode Anguillicola crassus (Kuwahara, Niimi et Itagaki, 1974) infecting 79% of the eel population with intensities up to 112 specimens per fish. At two localities no acanthocephalans could be found, whereas these parasites were very common at the other sites. The prevalence, mean intensity, intensity and abundance, their correlation to the body length, and the frequency distributions were analysed. The site selection of parasites is in relation to food composition and feeding habits of eels, physiological and structural differences in the intestine and possible interspecific competition were discussed.
Abandonment of agricultural lands in recent decades is occurring mainly in Europe, North America and Oceania, and changing the fate of landscapes as the ecosystem recovers during fallow stage. The objective of this study was to find the impact of secondary succession in abandoned fields on some parameters of acidic sandy soils in the Borská nížina lowland (southwestern Slovakia). We investigated soil chemical (pH and soil organic carbon content), hydrophysical (water sorptivity, and hydraulic conductivity), and water repellency (water drop penetration time, water repellency cessation time, repellency index, and modified repellency index) parameters, as well as the ethanol sorptivity of the studied soils. Both the hydrophysical and chemical parameters decreased significantly during abandonment of the three investigated agricultural fields. On the other hand, the water repellency parameters increased significantly, but the ethanol sorptivity did not change during abandonment. As the ethanol sorptivity depends mainly on soil pore size, the last finding could mean that the pore size of acidic sandy soils did not change during succession.
Gas exchange and chlorophyll fluorescence parameters of PSII were analyzed in the bracts and leaves of cotton plants after anthesis. Photosynthetic activity and photorespiration were measured in the leaves and bracts of cotton grown under either normal or reduced water-saving drip irrigation. The photosynthetic performance, amount of chlorophyll and Rubisco, and net photosynthesis were greater in the bracts than that in the leaves under water stress. The actual photochemical efficiency of PSII decreased in both the bracts and leaves after anthesis under reduced irrigation. However, the decrease was smaller in the bracts than in the leaves, indicating that the bracts experienced less severe photoinhibition compared to the leaves. The greater drought tolerance of bracts could be related to differences in relative water content, instantaneous water-use efficiency, and photorespiration rate. The ratio of photorespiration to net photosynthesis was much higher in the bracts than in leaves. Furthermore, water deficiency (due to the water-saving drip irrigation) had no significant effect on that ratio in the bracts. We hypothesized that photorespiration in the bracts alleviated photoinhibition and maintained photosynthetic activity., C. Zhang, D.-X. Zhan, H.-H. Luo, Y.-L. Zhang, W.-F.
