Forty-four genotypes from the rice germplasm were identified under photoinhibition/photooxidation and shade conditions and divided into four basic types: (1) cultivars tolerant to both photooxidation and shading, (2) cultivars tolerant to photooxidation but sensitive to shading, (3) cultivars tolerant to shading but sensitive to photooxidation, and (4) cultivars sensitive to both photooxidation and shading. Photosynthetic characteristics of a cultivar tolerant (cv. Wuyugeng 3) and a cultivar sensitive (cv. Xiangxian) to photooxidation and shading were compared. The photochemical efficiency (Fv/Fm) of photosystem 2 (PS2) and the content of PS2-D1 protein in the tolerant cultivar Wuyugeng 3 decreased less under photooxidative conditions as compared with Xiangxian. Under similar conditions, superoxide dismutase was induced rapidly to a higher activity and the active oxygen (O-) built up to a lower level in Wuyugeng 3 than in Xiangxian. Net photosynthetic rate (PN) decreased by 23 % in Wuyugeng 3 vs. 64 % in Xiangxian. Shading (80 %) during the booting stage caused only small decreases (7-13 %) in ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase activity and PN in Wuyugeng 3 but severe decreases (57-64 %) were observed in Xiangxian which corresponded to the decreases in grain yield of the two cultivars (38 and 73 %, respectively). We described a simple and effective screening method and physiological basis for breeding crops for enhanced tolerance to both high and low irradiance. and Demao Jiao, Xia Li.
Changes in pigment composition and chlorophyll (Chl) fluorescence parameters were studied in 20 year-old Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) trees grown in environment-controlled chambers and subjected to ambient conditions (CON), doubled ambient CO2 concentration (EC), elevated temperature (ambient +2-6 °C, ET), or a combination of EC and ET (ECT) for four years. EC did not significantly alter the optimal photochemical efficiency of photosystem 2 (PS2; Fv/Fm), or Chl a+b content during the main growth season (days 150-240) but it reduced Fv/Fm and the Chl a+b content and increased the ratio of total carotenoids to Chl a+b during the 'off season'. By contrast, ET significantly enhanced the efficiency of PS2 in terms of increases in Fv/Fm and Chl a+b content throughout the year, but with more pronounced enhancement in the 'off season'. The reduction in Fv/Fm during autumn could be associated with the CO2-induced earlier yellowing of the leaves, whereas the temperature-stimulated increase in the photochemical efficiency of PS2 during the 'off season' could be attributed to the maintenance of a high sink capacity. The pigment and fluorescence responses in the case of ECT showed a similar pattern to that for ET, implying the importance of the temperature factor in future climate changes in the boreal zone. and K. In grasslands where organic and inorganic resources are alternating at scales of individual plants, the transient character is given to certain wetting properties of soil, which then become highly variable both in space and in time. The objective of presented study was to study wetting pattern within two soil horizons at 5-cm and 10-cm depths respectively and to examine how the wetting patterns relate to hydraulic conductivity determined by Minidisc infiltrometer at suction -2 cm, K(-2 cm). This characteristics is implicitly independent on antecedent soil water content (SWC) since it relates to steady infiltration phase but can be influenced by present soil water repellency (SWR). Field measurements were performed on July 27-28, 2010 on the grassland experimental site located near the village Sekule in Southwest Slovakia. The water drop penetration time (WDPT), SWC and tension Minidisc infiltration measurements were carried out on the 0.64 m2 plot in a regular 8 x 8 grid. The results showed that SWR and SWC influence each other and cause correlation between spatial patterns of studied soil wetting characteristics and between characteristics measured at the two soil depths. Further, it was found out, that calculation of K(-2 cm) according to Zhang may cause apparent correlation of K(-2 cm) with antecedent SWC, which is the artificial effect of sorptivity parameter in the equation on steady stage of infiltration process. This pseudocorrelation has disappeared after adopting of Minasny and McBratney (2000) approaches by calculation of K(-2 cm).
